Devil's Tower, WY: America's 1st National Monument
11 Oct 2012: We broke camp at Hill City, SD's Crooked Creek Resort and RV Park early on the morning of October 11th 2012 and immediately experienced heavy fog as we traveled along Hwy 16 towards Rapid City, SD on our way to Sundance, WY 107 miles away. An alternate and perhaps shorter route would have been to take Hwy 385 out of Hill City up through Deadwood, SD but opted instead for the faster GPS route following Hwy 16 through Rapid City given the possibility of snow and bad roads along Hwy 385. Once out of Rapid City, SD we had clear highways with overcast skies as we traveled west along I-90 towards Sundance. We arrived at Sundance, WY about 1.5 hours later. We set up camp at the Mountain View RV Park & Campground in Sundance, WY, which was at this time of the year only sparsely populated. Water had been shut off to most of the campsites given the cold weather conditions. It didn't help that the wind was blowing noticeably as we set up camp...but, after all, it is Wyoming and the wind's presence is second nature.
On the 12th of October we headed out towards Devil's Tower, 27 miles from Sundance, WY, a little over 30 minute's travel time away in Wyoming's Black Hills. We headed west along Hwy 14 then headed north along State Hwy 24 until reaching Devil's Tower National Monument Road, which we then followed into the Park. This Monument is located on National Park Service property so one can still use the NPS Golden Age Passport to gain entrance at no cost. (NOTE: Golden Age Passports are no longer being sold, but if you have one it is still honored. Don't lose it...you can't get another one!) It is another half-mile or so from the check-in gate to reach the Visitor's Center located near the foot of the Devil's Tower Monument.
Devils Tower, as we know it, has been an important landmark to the Plains Indian tribes (the Arapaho, Crow, Cheyenne, Kiowa, Lakota, and Shoshone) long before the White Man reached Wyoming. It was known as Mateo Tepee, or Grizzly Bear Lodge, by the Sioux. It rises 1,280 feet above the Belle Fourche River with the summit being 5,112 feet above sea level, and includes a 1.3 mile hiking trail around the circumference. The Tower has also become a Mecca for rock climbers, with hundreds of climbers reaching the summit each summer.
From a distance, the Tower seems a bit trivial and somewhat unimposing. As you drive along Hwy 24 towards the Tower, the closer you get...the more magnificent it becomes. As you traverse to and around the Tower, with the sun shifting positions in the sky, the Tower never seems to present the same view, or the same colors, to an observer. Each picture takes on a different look.
The slideshow starts with a distant view of the Tower, then images of the Tower growing larger as we approach it in our vehicle. Eventually we reach the NPS check-in gate, show our pass, then head on past the Prairie Dog colony to the Visitor's Center. Inside the Center are displays showing numerous explanations of the Tower's creation...including both scientific and from an American Native's folklore point of view.
We then headed out for a hike up to and half-way around the tower's base. Excellent hiking paths have been provided to make your hiking experience a bit more enjoyable. The path took us through a portion of the boulder field, which demanded many more photos. They're all here!
We discovered the presence of a KOA campground located adjacent to the Park, but only after we arrived there! Also...about 35 miles away along SH 24 heading east you'll find Aladdin, WY...home of Cindy B's Café...famous for their pies and pancakes! Aladdin has a population of only 15, so the restaurant isn't hard to find!

History of Devils Tower
I went to Devils Tower this summer with my family. I was very impressed with this place. I had a ton of footage of Devils Tower and I wanted to put it to use. I had a lot of fun doing this one. I hope you enjoy it. I got all my info first hand at the Devils Tower welcome center and Wikipedia.
Devils Tower joy flight
The new Devils Tower freeware scenery from ORBX, by Frank Dainese is another masterpiece. Featuring a landable Devil's Tower, as well as upgrades to the surrounding scenery and a couple of airports. Here we join one of the joyflights that take off from the local pad and land on the top of the tower (something you won't find in the real world). You can get it when it's released at fullterrain.com in the freeware section.
Note: The video was recorded with FRAPS, all sliders full right and LOD set to 9.5000. This has caused a bit of jerkiness in the video that isn't there when flying just in FSX.

Mount Rushmore & Devils Tower⎜Boondocking RV LIVING
We see Mount Rushmore at night which was pretty fantastic! It was a different way to see a national landmark. Devils Tower definitely looks alien and is a must see place when you're traveling through Wyoming. We have learned to think outside the box a little when RV living with kids and traveling fulltime! I also get to fix the brakes on the Dodge 2500 after a nerve racking downhill run into the Devils Tower valley. Boondocking in the Black Hills was a super nice spot too!

Devils Tower National Monument - Road Trip Vlog 3
We visit Devils Tower in Wyoming, the first United States National Monument, site of the movie - Close Encounters of the Third Kind, see some prairie dogs, and learn about the Native American legends of the area. See it at:
We left Gillette, Wyoming early in the morning after a quick breakfast and headed out on the Interstate 90 heading east. There was a bit of cloudiness when we first started out, but once we headed up Highway 14 the horizon began to clear. Then we turned on Highway 24 and the sight we were waiting for appeared.
Seeing Devils Tower on the horizon is amazing. Neek, Sar and I pulled over once we saw a turn-out and got out to get a better view. There is something other-worldly about seeing, in the midst of the rolling forest and hills, this humungous geological formation raised so tall above everything around it. We got back in the car; excited about how close we were getting to this wonder.
As we drove closer, we came across another sight we had to stop for. There was a wide grassy field filled with prairie dogs appropriately called Prairie Dog Town. They were so cute! They made funny little high-pitched squeaks and boy, did they love to eat!
Driving into the parking lot of the Visitor Center at Devils Tower National Monument, we really got a sense of just how towering it really is.

Devils Tower National Monument, Wyoming - RV Living
We make a little detour into Wyoming to visit the Devils Tower National Monument. With plans to stay in the first-come-first-served Belle Fourche Campground, we get a little nervous waiting in line to get into the park with multiple RVs ahead of us. Once in and settled, we start exploring Devils Tower, hiking the Red Beds Trail to the Tower Trail the circles the base of the tower. One of the parks slogans is Half the Park is after dark, so we make a point to drive to an overlook for sunset, but the stormy Wyoming skies have a different idea. We enjoy learning about the mysterious geological history of Devils Tower and share an interesting story before moving on to our next adventure!

Devil's Tower - Top 10 Most Amazing Geological Wonders
I created this video with the YouTube Video Editor (
Devils Tower National Monument
Devils Tower (Lakota: Matȟó Thípila (Bear Lodge) is an igneous intrusion or laccolith in the Black Hills near Hulett and Sundance in Crook County, northeastern Wyoming, above the Belle Fourche River. It rises dramatically 1,267 feet (386 m) above the surrounding terrain and the summit is 5,114 feet (1,559 m) above sea level. Devils Tower was the first declared United States National Monument, established on September 24, 1906, by President Theodore Roosevelt. The Monument's boundary encloses an area of 1,347 acres (545 ha). In recent years, about 1% of the Monument's 400,000 annual visitors climb Devils Tower, mostly using traditional climbing techniques.

Devil's Tower National Monument
America's First National Monument is an interesting and stunning place to explore. It has a vast history and a current culture that is worth preserving. We are happy that we made this part of our #RockiesRoadTrip even though it is not in the Rockies. This NPS Site was on our way home. It was a great last stop.
