Countryside Homestay Experience | Traditional Japan House In Akita
It was my first time doing a homestay experience in the countryside of Japan but it sure was a very memorable and eye opening experience for me.
If you also want to stay here, email my friends at Akita Inu Tourism and they can help you contact Ishigaki-san and book for you in Japanese :) (English friendly - yay!)
akitainu.tourism@gmail.com
After Ishigaki-san retires, she wants to do this kind of homestay experience more and introduce more people to the beauty of the country side.
Here are all the activities I did in Akita:
I hope this video gave you some insight on what life can be like in the countryside of Japan! I love the countryside more as it's less explored by tourists so you really can see this raw kind of Japan and understand the local culture and history more.
Each prefecture has it's own speciality and history so what better way to immerse yourself in the culture than to try a homestay experience? :) I know a lot of you are worried if you can't speak Japanese but honestly you will be fine! It's not the language that matters, it's the connection between two people so step out of your comfort zone and try it. Japanese people in the countryside tend to be very friendly too and I'm sure they will give you a helping hand if you are lost even if they don't speak English.
If you do decide to go, let me know how your experience was and also tell Ishigaki-san I said hi! Hopefully she remembers me?! LOL
Have a good weekend everyone!!

Japan’s Town With No Waste
The village of Kamikatsu in Japan has taken their commitment to sustainability to a new level. While the rest of the country has a recycling rate of around 20 percent, Kamikatsu surpasses its neighbors with a staggering 80 percent. After becoming aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide associated with burning garbage, the town instated the Zero Waste Declaration with the goal of being completely waste-free by 2020.

12. Close up of bamboo water fountain
13. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) Sonobe Heihachi, owner and chef of Heihachi Tea House:
During the middle of the Edo era (1603-1868) when it became customary for commoners to dine on tatami (traditional Japanese flooring) mat rooms, Heihachi Tea House specialised in providing a dish comprised of rice with barley and ground yam. It then became an inn and a little later a restaurant.

25. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) Sonobe Heihachi, owner and chef of Heihachi Tea House:
Sons of chefs like us don't go straight into their own kitchens. They must go through an apprenticeship. They go to another restaurant and complete an apprenticeship. That is the first step and it takes between three and five years.
26. Close up of Shingo
27. Shingo carves a twisted plum blossom from a carrot
28. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) Sonobe Heihachi, owner and chef of Heihachi Tea House:
When the expectations that he has as a son and which he developed during childhood are removed, he can return to his family's restaurant as a junior chef. So when my son and I are in the kitchen together there is no longer a relationship between a parent and a child. I am a senior chef and he is my junior and our respective positions will never change.
29. Pan from Heihachi to Shingo
30. Shingo lighting the grill
31. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) Sonobe Shingo, son of Sonobe Heihachi:
When it comes to the small details of running the business of course we have different ways of thinking and that sometimes results in clashes and rebellion. But if you take a broader view, the good thing is that with regard to the restaurant and inn we all share a common purpose and we are all working towards a common goal.
32. Close up of grilled eel covered in a liquor consisting of soy sauce, mirin (sweet sake) and sugar

Japanese Restaurant Eating Japanese Traditional Foods
Japanese Restaurant Eating Japanese Traditional Foods
Yip went to Sagami to eat traditional Japanese cuisine (和食・わしょく) like Udon, Soba, Sushi and many others. While we we eat these foods at home, they seem much yummier at the restaurants and of course we don't need to prepare anything.

JAPAN'S MOST BEAUTIFUL GARDEN|Day 75 - Shimane
The Adachi Museum of Art (足立美術館, Adachi Bijutsukan) was founded by Adachi Zenko in 1980 as a way of combining his passions for Japanese art and garden design. He hoped that viewing the gardens and artwork together would expand peoples' appreciation and interest in Japanese art.The Adachi Museum of Art is best known for its award winning garden. It has been named the best garden in Japan annually since 2003 by the Journal of Japanese Gardening. The garden can be enjoyed at anytime of the year and shows a different character depending on the season. It can only be viewed from the museum building.
Iwami Ginzan (石見銀山) is a historic silver mine in the mountains of Oda City, Shimane Prefecture. The most prominent silver mine in Japan, it was discovered in the early 16th century and was mined for nearly 400 years.
The main attractions are divided into three areas. The Silver Mine area includes mine shafts and ruins from the area's mining period as well as a few temples and shrines. The Omori Town area includes museums, historical residences, and more shrines and temples.
