필로파포스 언덕에 자리 잡은 ‘도라 스트라투’라는 야외극장이었는데 이곳에서 그리스 각 지역의 전통 민속 댄스를 볼 수 있기 때문이다. 첫 번째로 무대에 올려진 레퍼토리는 ‘깔라마티아까’라는 펠로폰네소스 지방의 민속춤이었는데 우선 무용수들의 화려한 의상이 내 눈길을 끌었다. 이들 전통의상들은 고대 그리스부터 내려온 각 지방의 전통복장이라고 한다. 현재 이 극단은 2.500여벌의 전통의상을 보유하고 있는데, 지금은 더 이상 구하기 어려운 것들이어서 ‘살아있는 의상박물관’인 셈이다. 전통댄스에서 또 하나 중요한 것은 음악인데 무용수들과의 공감을 위해 녹음된 음악이 아니라, 반드시 라이브로 공연을 한다고 한다. 현재 그리스에는 총 100여개 지역에서 200여 가지의 춤 레퍼토리를 가지고 있다고 한다. 고대 이래 그리스 민족의 정체성을 이어주는 중요한 문화상징이 민속춤인 셈이다. “우리는 매일 밤 6개의 다른 지역 춤을 공연합니다. 우리는 2주마다 프로그램을 바꾸고 있는데 좀 더 많은 그리스 전 지역의 춤을 공연하려 합니다. 그리스는 내륙 또는 섬들에 걸쳐 약 100개 지역의 각각 다른 춤 레퍼토리를 가지고 있습니다. 그렇게 때문에 어떤 지역은 5년 후에나 공연을 하게 될 수도 있습니다.“

I had the joy of getting to attend a show at the Dora Stratou Theater in Athens last month and I had to share the experience with everyone. I took about a minute of video of each song/dance that was performed and a bunch of photos which are included as well so you can see all the costuming! The whole show is 1.5 hours so this is just a snapshot of it.

The Dora Stratou dance theater is the living museum of Greek dance and has been around since 1953. The performances change frequently and are all set in the garden theater, located on Philopappou Hill, opposite the Acropolis.

Zonaradiko: Greek Dancing St. Demetrios

Zonaradiko is a traditional Greekfolk dance from Thrace (Greece) that is named after the dance's handhold. Dancers hold the adjacent dancer's zonaria (belt) during the dance. Zonaradiko is a village line dance done in one form or another all over Greece. In each village the dance will look somewhat different, but the basic structure is essentially the same.
