Chamisal Vineyards - Edna Valley
Located half-way between San Francisco and Los Angeles, not too far south of the Paso Robles appellation, this area has gained recognition as one of the premier Chardonnay and Pinot Noir regions in California. It is often compared to the Santa Maria Valley AVA closer to Santa Barbara.
Martin Weyrich 2006 Edna Valley Chardonnay
Martin Weyrich's 2006 Edna Valley Chardonnay was produced from grapes in the famed Edna Valley appellation in southern San Luis Obispo County. As one of the pioneering wineries to work with Edna Valley fruit, Martin & Weyrich produced one of the area's first Gold Medal winning Chardonnays in 1981. This Burgundian-styled 2006 Chardonnay was hand harvested and aged in oak to display much of the same characteristic tropical fruit and toasted oak flavors that have made this wine a medal-winning selection from vintage to vintage. Awarded 95 Points and a Gold Medal at the California State Fair Wine Competition, this Chardonnay is filled with bright flavors of pear, lemon meringue and key lime pie, with a sweet and spicy oak framework. The Edna Valley Chardonnay also received a Gold Medal at the Orange County Wine Competition and a Gold Medal at the Central Coast Wine Competition, making it a popular choice among a multitude of wine judges. Try pairing the Martin & Weyrich 2006 Edna Valley Chardonnay with braised chicken, Alaskan King Crab, and lobster bisque. Aged 15 months in oak. 100% Chardonnay. Enjoy now until 2012.
Road Trip to Wine Country: California Highway 1’s Discovery Route
A few weekends ago I got to escape LA for a few days and explore a part of the state I had never visited before... We took a road trip, a few hours north of LA, up the CA Highway 1 Discovery Route to San Luis Obispo County. Not only is the central coast of California beautiful, but there are also incredible hikes, beaches, and my favorite... vineyards! There is something pretty magical about driving through the winding roads, stopping in and out of different tasting rooms, and discovering all the perfectly crafted and unique wines, roses, and bubbles.
Any time is a great time to drive up to the SLOCAL area, but this time of year is extra special. If you head up North, be sure to check out the tastings rooms we visited: Laetitia Wine, Saucelito Canyon Vineyard, Edna Valley Vineyard, and Malene Wines!

Spent the first weekend of December in SLO to do a little wine tasting. We took the famous HWY 1 to and from the city. We visited four local wineries, and stayed at a local hotel situated on a cliff overlooking the pacific ocean. Not to mention, did a couple stops throughout our drive to see local communities.
San Luis Obispo is a city in the U.S. state of California, located roughly midway between Los Angeles and San Francisco on the Central Coast.

La Panza Ranch, Santa Margarita, CA
See the Property Web Site! :: La Panza Ranch is a magnificent, diverse property situated east of Santa Margarita, California on State Highway 58, boasting intricate olive, cattle and hay operations and extensive improvements. An expansive, 14,750-acre holding comprised of 51 legal, certificated parcels, La Panza Ranch encompasses lush valleys and rolling hills with picturesque views in every direction.
The La Panza Ranch history is rich and fascinating. Though quiet now, La Panza was once one of the most heavily traveled stagecoach roads between the Coast and the San Joaquin Valley. During the La Panza Gold Rush of 1877 miners successfully mined below a 20-foot waterfall in Haystack Canyon located on the Ranch. In the 1860?s, La Panza Ranch was owned by Drury James, uncle of the notorious outlaws Jesse & Frank James. Drury James is also credited as one of the three founders of nearby Paso Robles, the heart of the Central Coast wine country.
A principal attribute of La Panza Ranch is the diversity of its operations. Historically utilized as a cattle ranch, La Panza Ranch contains all the necessary infrastructure for a cattle operation, including irrigated cattle pastures and livestock water throughout the ranch.
The La Panza Ranch water resources are substantial, providing plenty of water even in the driest of years. There are over 50 wells, 3 reservoirs, and at least five major springs. In addition, the year-round San Juan Creek runs through the center and eastern portions of the Ranch.
One of the most impressive features of La Panza Ranch is the olive operation. The olive orchards comprise approximately 280 acres planted with over 200,000 olive trees. The olive operation is completed by a state-of-the-art Alfa-Laval olive mill supported by the nearby office and ranch manager?s home.
Further, La Panza Ranch has over 100 acres of cabernet and zinfandel grapes and 635 combined acres of oat hay, alfalfa and forage hay. There are also approximately 300 acres of land with water development for future agricultural use
In addition, La Panza Ranch includes extensive fencing and over 100 miles of ranch roads. To aid with road maintenance, the Ranch has its own quarry, gravel pit and crushers. Electrical power extends the entire length of the Ranch contributing considerable value.
La Panza Ranch also enjoys prolific wildlife including black bear, mountain lion, Tule elk, and a variety of bird species, among others.
Last but not least, La Panza Ranch is characterized by its elaborate improvements.
The elegant hacienda-style main home is comprised of 5,500 square feet and includes a grand entrance, master suite, huge great room, extravagant kitchen, and gym. Outside are a wrap-around tiled porch, entertaining areas and striking water features.
The exquisite main residence is accompanied by a delightful 2-bedroom guest cottage and handsome 4-bedroom bunk house.
Irrigated horse pastures and numerous barns, plus thoughtful amenities like the putting green and helicopter pad, complement the extraordinary residences and bring all of the improvements into harmony.
