Bookworms welcome! An introduction to the world's largest book city Jimbocho!
If you love books, Jimbocho is the place to go!
With about 200 bookstores, Jimbocho has a lot to offer. Most of the bookshops sell antique and rare books, however, they also offer a variety of other print media, such as old maps, old movie posters, and movie scripts. Furthermore, some bookstores are specialized in one genre, such as manga (comic) books, architecture related books, and art books and exhibition catalogs. Whether you are doing some research on old Japan, you study Japanese, or you are just looking for some nice home decor articles, Jimbocho is worth a visit!
These are some of our bookstore recommendations!
◆ ◆ ◆
◆ ◆ Antique books, maps and woodblock prints from the Edo period: OHYA SHOBO
Ohya Shobo
The first thing that catches your eye is the huge map of Edo Tokyo in the shop window of this bookstore. When entering the shop, shelves over shelves filled with antique books and scripts from the Edo period (1603-1868) will astonish you. The shop offers books from every genre you could think of, such as history, literature, art, calligraphy, tea ceremony, martial arts, medicine, picture books, etc. Old maps and ukiyo-e woodblock prints can be used as beautiful home decor.
◆ ◆ Art books, catalogs and artist's memoirs: BOHEMIAN'S GUILD
Bohemian's Guild
This is a must-go bookstore for everyone who loves art! The store offers an eclectic collection of foreign and Japanese art books, artists' books, and exhibition catalogs. Behind the cash register and on the second floor, several showcases show original art pieces by Takehisa Yumeji, Ogai Mori's drafts and letters from Ryunosuke Akutagawa.
◆ ◆ All about architecture - from old books to the latest volumes: NANYODO SHOTEN
Nanyodo Shoten
This bookstore is all about architecture. So it comes as no surprise that the building of the shop itself is a beautiful concrete architecture with a large window that makes the structure look light and welcoming. The first and second-floor offer are old and new Japanese architecture books as well as magazine back numbers, while the 3rd-floor has a collection of Western books.
◆ ◆ Looking for the latest manga issues or cute accessories? Check out BOOKS SANSEIDO
Books Sanseido
With over 1.4 million books of each genre, this bookstore is like a department store for books. If you are looking for the latest Japanese manga, go to the Comic Station on the 6th floor. The huge comic corner offers everything from manga classics to the latest issues. The hand-drawn signature boards of famous manga artist are also worth a look.
◆ ◆ Need a break? Read a book in a Japanese retro café!
Jimbocho area isn't only famous for its bookstores, but also for its retro cafes. One of the most popular ones is the Sabouru, which is nestled in a back alley close to Jimbocho station. The cottage style café seems like a cozy cave and once you go in, you don't want to leave ever again. The settled lighting is just bright enough to read a book. Here, you get great coffee - but if you want to order the local's favorite, you should go for the strawberry juice!
◆ ◆ ◆
Stay tuned for more information about Jimbocho in the future!

Japanese Martial Arts Spy Story | Mission: Naginata ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Japan's Samurai City is a short and scenic train trip from Tokyo's TOBU Asakusa Station. This place of warriors, Japanese sake and good food is called Aizu Wakamatsu located in west Fukushima. It's the focus of my cringe-worthy spy story filled with deception and total mayhem.
Aizu Wakamatsu is famous for NAGINATA, a martial art using a weapon of long sticks with blades! That's why I'm here ー to learn a new skill from a bunch of old ladies who are vicious with their Naginata. I should say ー deadly!
Adding Naginata to my repertoire of deadly assault moves is my challenge but the Agent from the Underworld is in my way.
At every turn, the Agent is there to try and harm me.
Brainwashing. Poison. Pure evil. That's the Agent's game.
Thankfully I have Wakamattsun - a 30 centimeter samurai and area mascot on my side to help me out of tough spots, and I seem to get in tough spots a lot.
PS: THE ENDING is epic. Meet the mastermind himself.
WHERE IS AIZU WAKAMATSU (会津若松) ?
It's a scenic 4 hour train ride from Tokyo's Asakusa TOBU Station to Aizu Wakamatsu Station.
Here is my exact itinerary:
▶︎ DEPART 08:00 - KINU EXPRESS to Kinugawa Onsen
▶︎ CHANGE 10:00 at Kinugawa Onsen - AIZU MOUNT EXPRESS
▶︎ ARRIVE 12:01 Aizu Wakamatsu Station
LINKS:
★ Tsuruga (Aizu Wakamatsu) Castle 鶴ケ城・武徳殿

A night out in Asakusa - The streets of Old Tokyo.
Based in Asakusa, the heart of Tokyo since the Edo era. We want to show visitors the Tokyo of everyday. Back alleys, neighborhood cats, and old houses, are the kind of old-school stuff from Tokyo that catches our interest.
We love Tokyo and particularly East Tokyo, where stories dating back from centuries can be found in every corner.

Gorgeous Nagoya Castle Special Historic Site. One of the three great castles, Aichi, Japan
Gorgeous Nagoya Castle Special Historic Site. One of the three great castles Japan Trip/ Nagoya, Aichi, Japan02 Moopon
Nagoya Castle was built in the earlier time of the Edo Period as the seat of one of the three branches of the ruling Tokugawa family, the Owari branch. As such, it was one of the largest castles in the country, and the castle town around it ultimately grew to become Japan's 4th biggest city.
Most castle buildings were destroyed in the airstrike in 1945, including the castle keep and the palace buildings. The current ferro-concrete reconstruction of the castle keep dates from 1959 and contains a modern museum with exhibits about the castle's history. The park surrounding the castle keep features two circles of moats and awesome walls with corner turrets. It’s also an attractive hanami spot during the cherry blossom season from late March to early April.
Rebuilding works began in 2009, using traditional construction materials and techniques. A first part of the reconstructed palace, including the entrance and main audience hall with beautiful replicated paintings on the sliding doors (fusuma) were completed and opened to the public in May 2013. The rest of the palace is planned to open in 2016 and 2018.
During the reconstruction works, castle visitors are allowed to enter the scaffolding structure and observe the reconstruction works from a raised corridor except on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This provides a special opportunity to observe traditional construction techniques and should not be missed.
Notice of Construction
The castle's former palace buildings are currently being reconstructed next to the main keep until spring 2018. Because visitors are allowed to closely observe the construction works, they can even enrich a visit to the castle. Furthermore, one of the castle's turret is currently being renovated until 2014.
Access Information
By Train
Take the Higashiyama Subway Line to Sakae Station from Nagoya Station (5 minutes) and change to the Meijo Subway Line to Shiyakusho Station (2 minutes). It costs 240 yen. A3 minute walk brings you to the castle’s east gate.

About 25 minutes. Fare is 200 yen per ride or 500 yen for a day pass.

4K 伝法院庭園 浅草 Denbo-in Garden Asakusa Tokyo JAPAN
Denbo-in garden is a garden adjacent to the famous Senso-ji temple in Asakusa.
The garden is one of the few temple gardens from the Edo period in Tokyo.
While it is one of the most impressive places in this area, it is only open during a limited time each year (from mid-March until early May). It is in fact the private garden of Senso-ji Temple’s abbot. In the olden days it was only open to nobles.
You enter the garden through the building next to the Five-storied Pagoda.
One of the famous sights in this garden is from the South-West corner where you see the pond, the large study and the Five-storied Pagoda in the background.
