The Caminito de Rey (The King's Little Walkway) runs for over three kilometres some 100 metres above the Guadalhorce River in the Desfiladero del los Gaitanes Gorge near the village of El Chorro, north west of Málaga. Finished in 1906, it was constructed to service a channel and numerous sluice gates connected to the Salto de Chorro hydroelectric plant. Its royal association came when El Chorro Dam was inaugurated by King Alfonso XIII who walked the pathway in 1921. Once considered to be the scariest and most dangerous pathway in the world, it was closed to the public for safety reasons in 2000 following several fatal accidents.
But not anymore. At the of March 2015, the first tourists traversed an impressive new boardwalk installed at a cost of 2.7 million, mostly constructed right above the crumbling old concrete walkway. Tourists are given a hard helmet which must be worn at all times on the linear route which totals approximately 7.7 km, divided into 4.8 km long access ways and 2.9 km long boardwalks. A reasonable level of fitness is required; allow around 4.5-5 hours to complete the walk. Coaches run between the north and south ends of the gorge for a modest price. Groups of 50 people are allowed to enter the walkway every half an hour and we were among the lucky ones who managed to obtain free tickets on offer for only the first six months.
Billed as one of the top new travel experiences by Lonely Planet for 2015 will do much to ensure the popularity of El Caminito del Rey. Although via ferrate climbers and thrill seekers will lament the loss of one of their most risqué adventure playgrounds, those looking for a bit of excitement will doubtless find this just the ticket. If they can get hold of one!

I wasn't excited about climbing in El Chorro
I was pretty worried about both my endurance and head game, but we took the first two days gently, even if we did get stuck part way up a techhy 6c, with me having to abseil down to rescue the quickdraws.

El Chorro is a small village located in Málaga in southern Spain, near the town of Álora. El Chorro is one of the most popular rock climbing attractions in Spain as El Chorro is located next to Desfiladero de los Gaitanes (Gorge of the Gaitanes), The village of El Chorro is also frequented by mountain bikers, hikers, and campers.
The gorge was famous for a scary walkway called Caminito del Rey (King's Pathway) which hangs 100m above the base of the gorge. The path provided access to a hydro-electric plant and took its name after an official visit by Alfonso XIII of Spain in 1921. Official access to the path was removed in 2000 on grounds of safety, whilst rock climbers, for whom the gorge contains many excellent and historic climbs, were given access by a via ferrata that lead back onto the remaining Caminito. The local government agreed to share costs of restoration of the Caminito, which it was completed in March 2015 at a cost of 2.8 million euros.
The gorge runs from the end of the Embalse del Gaitanejo to El Chorro. There are two extremely narrow sections at each end of the gorge with a wider bowl in between. In addition to the revitalised walkway, the old Málaga-Cordoba railway line runs through the gorge in a set of tunnels and bridges. The gorge features prominently as a place of escape and refuge for the main characters played by Stephen Boyd and Brigitte Bardot in the 1958 movie The Night Heaven Fell. The railway and sections of the Caminito were used in the final location shots of the 1965 adventure film Von Ryan's Express.

We descended from one side of the valley into El Chorro itself and then up the other side to hit some of the trails that the Atherton's had been using to test out their new bike only two weeks before.
The two sides could not be any more different as you will see in the video.

Learning to Lead Climb in El Chorro, Spain
Five days spent climbing in the beautiful El Chorro, Andalucia, Spain just before Christmas.
I took the opportunity of being outside sport-climbing to become confident lead-climbing.
While top-roping means having a rope above you set by a climber before, lead-climbing means clipping the rope into quick-draws and bolts on your way, so protecting yourself.
