The Deep Blue Load of Spanish Hill--Part 1
The El Dorado Historical Society presents historian George Peabody telling the story of the mountain of gold found in Placerville, CA. Millions of dollars worth of gold were mined from the Deep Blue Load. One of the richest of several tributaries that fed the main Tertiary channel is the Deep Blue lead. This ancient channel first appears at Georgia Hill, northwest the Toombs Ranch. It then heads south, passing southwest of the ranch, before crossing White Rock Creek, and dipping under the volcanic rocks near Lava Cap Winery. It then emerges from beneath the cap and continues south to Three Mile House at Smith's Flat, about three miles from Placerville on the old Carson Valley Highway. The Deep Blue then crosses Hangtown Creek, swings southwest, passing north of Texas Hill, and ends near Spanish Hill about 1½ miles southeast of Placerville, Escaton Village is built on the site of Spanish Hill.

CAMINO CABLE & NORTHERN RAILWAY, 16MM SOUND FILM, EL DORADO COUNTY CA.
BUILDING A RAILROAD, this 16mm film is a combination of black and white, color, sound and silent formats. There are some very nice interviews at the end so sit back and watch as they build it and then take a ride on the Camino Cable & Northern!
I have tried doing a little research on this private tourist railway and found it was created by a man named Hal Wilmunder and other railroad enthusiasts in the 1960's. The tracks pretty much followed the same grade that the earlier Michigan California railroad used. There is no longer a Camino, Cable & Northern Railway but here in this 16mm film we get to see it and some of the folks that volunteered to help build and maintain it.

Clarksville Day El Dorado County May 9th, 2009
Clarksville Day El Dorado County May 9th, 2009 - Family video from Clarksville day.The remains of Clarksville was open to the public for a celebration of the towns history. The family friendly event featured Pony Express Remount demonstrations, a Civil War era encampment, the Mormon Battalion re-enactment group, gold panning, music and more.
Clarksville was founded during the Gold Rush with the construction of Mormon Tavern, according to the Clarksville Historical Society.
The town eventually grew around the tavern and served as a supply station for those traveling into the hills to mine for gold, according to Betty January, president of the historical society.
It was founded probably around 1847, she said. This town emerged as a gateway to the gold fields. Its had many ups and downs (during its history).
Present-day El Dorado Hills is built on the foundation of Clarksville, according to January.
Around 1960, it was pretty well done in, she said. (Thats when a developer) came in, bought all the land and changed the name to El Dorado Hills.
Some of the dozen structures still standing date back to the 1860s.
One famous (building here) is the Kyburz house, she said. Samuel Kyburz moved in here in the late 1860s. His house is still barely standing.
Kyburz once worked for John Sutter, the man credited with starting the California Gold Rush. When the Kyburz home in Sacramento was flooded in the 1860s, he packed up and moved to higher ground in Clarksville.
The old one-room schoolhouse that once educated the towns children.
United School, part of the Buckeye School District, closed its doors probably in the 1950s, she said.
It is visible from Highway 50 as motorists drive east just before the Bass Lake Grade.
If they look to the right, they will see the red barn, she said. That is the old schoolhouse.
In the past, the historical society held the celebration at the El Dorado Hills Library. This year is the first time theyve been allowed access to the original town site to host the celebration.
The town is also home to a significant stretch of a historic highway.
This roadway here is probably the longest stretch of the Lincoln Highway in California, she said. It goes right through Clarksville.

Visiting Gold Country
Please X out the annoying ad immediately so the captions are visible. Enjoy the images of Gold Country.
We took the Amtrak to Stockton, where Karen's cousin Bill met us at the station. After a nice visit and an overnight at the Best Western, we rented a car and drove to Elk Grove, the starting point for sightseeing through the Gold Country. Stops and side trips along Highway 49 included Coloma, Placerville, wineries, Columbia State Park and Calaveras Big Trees. We finished up in Sonora, then drove back to Stockton for the return train ride. I hope you enjoy the pictures and get a feel for Gold Country and what the area has to offer the photographer.
