NSK Embassy Moscow Revisited
Two roundtable discussions with IRWIN and guests, moderated by Viktor Misiano, co-founder of APT ART International
On May 10, 1992, The IRWIN Group (Ljubljana, Slovenia) and APT ART International established the NSK EMBASSY MOSCOW in collaboration with Regina Gallery, one of Moscow’s first privately-owned galleries.
The Neue Slowenische Kunst (NSK) movement, launched by the Yugoslavian collective Laibach in collaboration with IRWIN and Scipion Nasice Sisters Theater, announced the foundation of a new ‘State in Time’ in 1991. The micro-state, which mirrored the structure of the NSK artistic movement, was established in response to the disintegration of the Yugoslavian Federation.
For one month, the NSK Embassy hosted lectures and debates around the concept of ‘How the East sees the East’ in a rented apartment at 12 Leninsky Prospect in Moscow.
APT ART International – comprised of members Victor Misiano, Konstantin Zvezdochetov and Lena Kurlyandtseva – established its name in reference to the apartment-based exhibitions of unofficial art in the 1970s and 80s, founded by Moscow Conceptualist Nikita Alexeev, amongst others. An essential element of this kind of exhibition was its intense kitchen conversations. The group spearheading APT ART proposed to take this tradition to the international stage by establishing a model for interaction whereby artists could discuss their issues and differences as if sitting around a kitchen table. At the NSK EMBASSY MOSCOW this was an opportunity to compare the developmental paths of art in the 1980s in the former USSR and the former Yugoslavia and to identify the intersection points of the two ‘socialisms.’ Thus, the Embassy became the first project in modern Russia to establish a direct dialogue with artists from Eastern Europe, in opposition to both their common past and the looming West.
NSK EMBASSY MOSCOW REVISITED is a series of conversations and roundtable discussions between some of the original participants and a new generation of practitioners. Together they will reconsider some of the urgent questions from 22 years ago in the context of our current social and cultural climate.
Discussants: Ilya Budraitskis, Marina Grzinic, IRWIN, Anatoly Osmolovsky, Valeriy Podoroga, Haim Sokol.

USA: SLOVENIAN PRIME MINISTER DRNOVESK PRESS CONFERENCE
English/Nat
Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Drnovsek says United States officials believe his country has a good chance of being accepted for North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) membership.
Drnovsek was in the U-S to meet with U-S President Bill Clinton, Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, and members of Congress.
In the first wave of expansion, Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic are to join NATO next year, and Slovenia hopes to be included in the next wave.
NATO is scheduled to hold a meeting in Washington in the spring, during which membership candidacy may be discussed.
Prime Minister Drnovesk has lobbied hard for his country to join NATO, and his trip to Washington has definitely been a part of that effort.
Drnovesk says his country is a good candidate for NATO for many reasons -- its growing economy, stable government and good strategic position.
SOUNDBITE: We see Slovenia as an element of stability in southeast Europe. Already today we cooperate with NATO and the United States in different initiatives to establish peace and stability in region.
SUPER CAPTION: Janez Drnovesk, Prime Minister of Slovenia
According to the prime minister, Slovenia is not seeking protection from any of the conflicts that accompanied the break up of the former Yugoslav federation that it was a part of until 1992.
SOUNDBITE: Slovenia does not feel threatened or endangered in its way. So this is not the reason to join NATO. But we think we can cooperate and should cooperate with other Western countries to ensure more stability and peace in our region.
SUPER CAPTION: Janez Drnovesk, Prime Minister of Slovenia
Drnovesk says he hopes Slovenia will be the next candidate for membership, either in a group with other nations, or on its own.
SOUNDBITE: I expect there will probably be some commitment at Washington summit for further NATO enlargement and probably also some encouragement for the best candidates, including Slovenia.
SUPER CAPTION: Janez Drnovesk, Prime Minister of Slovenia
Slovenia's membership is also supported by Italy and France.
SOUNDBITE: Til now everybody was concerned, or was, lets say, concentrating on admitting the first three countries, certification process going on and somehow nobody wanted to really open serious discussions about the next step. But we are coming into a situation to start these discussions again.
SUPER CAPTION: Janez Drnovesk, Prime Minister of Slovenia
The Prime Minister assured America that his country has been developing its military to comply with NATO standards.

STORYLINE:
Slovenian police arrested more than 20 protesters on Saturday after a scuffle at the U-S embassy, as the Russian-U-S presidential summit got underway just outside the capital, Ljubljana.
Shortly before the two presidents arrived, 22 members of the environmental group Greenpeace were arrested after five of them jumped the fence at the U-S embassy in Ljubljana.
Two of the protesters chained themselves to the stairs leading into the embassy building.
Another tried to climb the flagpole and remove the U-S flag before he was apprehended and handcuffed by embassy guards wearing civilian clothes.
Outside the compound, the other activists chained themselves together and held up a banner reading Stop Star Wars the name given to Bush's controversial national missile defence programme.
Slovene riot police rushed to the scene, cut the chains and took the protesters into custody.
12 were from Austria, six from Slovakia, two from Britain and the others from the Czech Republic and Spain.
Before the protest, a Greenpeace activist, Mike Townsley, said his group was angry over the collapse of the weapons control treaties, principally the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile treaty which Bush has branded a relic of the Cold War.
Other groups opposed to American and Russian policies were holding protests as President George W Bush and President Vladimir Putin met for the first time in a 16th century manor outside Brdo Pri Kranju, about 30 kilometers (18 miles) north of the Slovenian capital.
Amnesty International held a protest to highlight human rights abuses by the two superpowers.
Members of the group collected signatures on petitions against capital punishment in the United States and Russia.
Amnesty International had planned to send its petitions by fax to Brdo castle where the American and Russian leaders are meeting.
However Amnesty International members said someone disconnected the line after 30 copies had been sent.
Bush's five-nation tour of Europe, which began on Tuesday in Spain, has been dogged by protests - mostly against his missile defence plan and his rejection of the 1997 international agreement to curb greenhouse gas emissions.
Slovene authorities have stepped up security to prevent extremists from entering the country to cause trouble during the one-day meeting.
On Saturday, Slovene authorities stopped a bus carrying about 40 members of Italian-based anti-globalisation group, Ya Basta, after it crossed the Italian side of the border.

Ambassador Mussomeli speaking at Mt. Mangart Ski Race
On June 3, 1945, soldiers from the US 10th Mountain Division posted in the mountains of Slovenia set up a giant slalom race course. The ski race and that part of history have been largely forgotten in Slovenia and the United States until Brigadier General (ret) Janez Kavar saw a photo of Mt. Mangart in a memorial to the 10th Mountain Division in Vail, Colorado ten years ago.
After much research, Brigadier Kavar created an exhibit detailing these events. The response was tremendous. With the assistance of the Slovenian Ministry of Defense, the municipality of Bovec and US Embassy Ljubljana, BG Kavar and 56 other competitors from 4 countries skiied the same course on Mt. Mangart on June 4, 2011.
Here is the US Ambassador to Slovenia, Joseph A Mussomeli speaking at the opening ceremonies for the race on June 3, 2011.
