The English Cemetery in Malaga, HD
The English Cemetery in Malaga was established William Mark who was British Consul in Malaga from 1824 until 1836. Due to his persistent efforts he was finally given permission to create a permanent cemetery on the Velez road outside the walls of the city. This is the old walled cemetery, as it still exists today, finished in 1831 and containing its poignant collection of graves covered with seashells. The English Cemetery now covers over 8,000 sq. m. and contains more than 1000 graves. The cemetery is also a botanical garden with a number of unusual specimens of trees and plants. With several well-known people buried there, it has become one of Malaga's historical sites. The English Cemetery is a beautiful and well-visited place of peace and quiet in the middle of a bustling city of over half-a-million people.

British Ambassador to Spain, Simon Manley, visited the English Cemetery in Malaga on 3rd February as members of the cemetery's trust, led by president Bruce McIntyre, offered him a guided tour of the

Simon Manley thanked the mayor of Malaga, Francisco de la Torre, for granting funds for a new green wall.
The English Cemetery in Malaga
The English Cemetery in Malaga, where St George’s Church stands, is the result of the inspiration and concern of William Mark who was British Consul in Malaga from 1824 until 1836. In the eight years he had lived in Malaga before his appointment as Consul he had looked “with great disgust” on the way Protestants had to buried on the sea shore at dead of night. Due to his persistent efforts he was finally given permission to create a permanent cemetery on the Velez road outside the walls of the city. This is the old walled cemetery, as it still exists today, finished in 1831 and containing its poignant collection of graves covered with seashells. The adjoining mortuary is now the church library.

British Consul-General's grave found in Málaga
The collapse of a path in the English cemetery in Málaga uncovered a crypt in which William Mark, the first British Consul-General to Málaga, and his family are buried. They were evangelical Christians who died in the very Catholic Spain of the mid-nineteenth century. Mark died in 1849, but before the English cemetery was built, evangelicals who died in the Málaga region ended up buried vertically, outside the city walls right next to the shore, with the danger that in time the waves would expose the remains to view. Even this, though, was a special 'privilege' granted by the Spanish king!
A visit to the Cementerio Inglés de Málaga
Scenes from the Cementerio Inglés de Málaga (English Cemetery in Malaga, Spain). Sometimes referred to as the Cemetery of St George. It's no definitely no Père Lachaise as it lacks any real funny art but it's worth a visit if in the area. Preferably on a Sunday morning when the church is open and it seems to be free to walk around.

Eviction notices haunt the dead in Spain
At a cemetery in Zaragoza, Spain, the threat of eviction has followed the dead to their final resting place.
After two years of recession and unemployment above 20 per cent, the families of the deceased are being confronted with eviction notices on the tombstones of their loved ones.
The families are told to pay for the burial leases, renewed every five years, or have the remains of the deceased moved to common ground. A fate that has befallen over 400 people in recent months.
Combined with financial hardships, the threat of eviction is pushing more families towards cremation rather than paying the upkeep for a traditional burial or crypt.

Places to see in ( Malaga - Spain )
Málaga is a port city on southern Spain’s Costa del Sol, known for its high-rise hotels and resorts jutting up from yellow-sand beaches. Looming over that modern skyline are the city’s 2 massive hilltop citadels, the Alcazaba and ruined Gibralfaro, remnants of Moorish rule. The city's soaring Renaissance cathedral is nicknamed La Manquita (one-armed lady) because one of its towers was curiously left unbuilt.
Malaga is the second-most populous city of Andalusia and the sixth-largest in Spain. The southernmost large city in Europe, Malaga lies on the Costa del Sol (Coast of the Sun) of the Mediterranean, about 100 kilometres (62.14 miles) east of the Strait of Gibraltar and about 130 km (80.78 mi) north of Africa. The internationally acclaimed painter and sculptor Pablo Picasso, Hebrew poet and Jewish philosopher Solomon Ibn Gabirol and the actor Antonio Banderas were born in Málaga. The magnum opus of Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona, Malagueña, is named for the music of this region of Spain.
Málaga is located in southern Spain, on the Costa del Sol (Coast of the Sun) on the northern side of the Mediterranean Sea. It lies at the feet of the Montes de Málaga, about 100 kilometres (62 miles) east of the Strait of Gibraltar and about 130 kilometres (81 miles) east of Tarifa (the southernmost point of continental Europe) and about 130 km (81 miles) to the north of Africa.
The old historic centre of Málaga reaches the harbour to the south. In the north it is surrounded by mountains, the Montes de Málaga (part of the Baetic Cordillera) lying in the southern base of the Axarquía hills, and two rivers, the Guadalmedina – the historic center is located on its left bank – and the Guadalhorce, which flows west of the city into the Mediterranean.
The Moors left posterity the dominating presence of the Castle of Gibralfaro, which is connected to the Alcazaba, the lower fortress and royal residence. Both were built during the Taifa period (11th century) and extended during the Nasrid period (13th and 14th centuries).
Like many of the military fortifications that were constructed in Islamic Spain, the Alcazaba of Málaga featured a quadrangular plan. It was protected by an outer and inner wall, both supported by rectangular towers, between which a covered walkway led up the slope to the Gibralfaro (this was the only exchange between the two sites).
The Church of Santiago (Saint James) is an example of Gothic vernacular Mudéjar, the hybrid style that evolved after the Reconquista incorporating elements from both Christian and Islamic tradition. Also from the period is the Iglesia del Sagrario, which was built on the site of the old mosque immediately after the city fell to Christian troops. It boasts a richly ornamented portal in the Isabeline-Gothic style, unique in the city. The Cathedral and the Episcopal Palace were planned with Renaissance architectural ideals but there was a shortfall of building funds and they were finished in Baroque style. The Basílica y Real Santuario de Santa María de la Victoria, built in the late 17th century, has a chapel in which the vertical volume is filled with elaborate Baroque plasterwork.
Other sights include:
Walls. Phoenician, Roman, Byzantine, Arab and Spanish remains of the defensive compounds of the city.
La Concepción, botanical and historical garden.
Church of the Sacred Heart.
San Felipe Neri Church.
Church of the Holy Martyrs.
Atarazanas Market.

A popular walk leads up the hill to the Gibralfaro castle (a Parador), offering panoramic views over the city. The castle is next to the Alcazaba, the old Muslim palace, which in turn is next to the inner city of Málaga. Other nearby attractions are the Roman Theatre, the old Jewish quarter, the Cathedral, and the Church of Santiago in mudéjar style. A popular walk follows the Paseo del Parque (a promenade that runs alongside a grand park with many palm trees and statues) to the harbour, ending in Calle Larios, the main commercial street of the city.

Former Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Tejero Molina, who carried out an assault on the Spanish Congress of Deputies on February 23, 1981, went to the Mingorrubio graveyard on the day former dictator Francisco Franco was buried there.
Footage shows Tejero passing the police cordon while Franco's sympathizers cheer him on. Police can also be seen preventing journalists from asking him questions. At one point, the former Guardia Civil said he was waiting for his son.
The coup plotter's son, Ramon Tejero, was in charge of officiating Franco's reburial ceremony after the government accepted the dictator's family's request.
In 1981 Tejero entered the Congress of Deputies as part of a failed coup attempt, which resulted in a 30-year prison sentence for military rebellion. Thirty other military and Guardia Civil agents also received different convictions.

The English Cemetery
The English Cemetery is located just outside the historic center of Florence, in the Donatello square, where was once one of the gateways to the city, the Porta Pinti.
In 1827 the area was sold by the grand-ducal government to the Reformed Anglican Church of Switzerland and enlarged in 1860 after the purchase of an additional parcel of land. Here was built the first non-Catholic cemetery in the city.
Before that, non-Catholics and non-Jews who died in Florence could only be buried in Livorno, historically the most cosmopolitan city in Italy.
