Sixth Annual Epicurean Delights - May 1, 2010 at Central Distributing
The Fresno Fire Chiefs Foundation (FFCF) will host its sixth annual spring fundraiser, Epicurean Delights, on Saturday, May 1, 2010, from 12 p.m. 4 p.m. at Central Distributing, 4250 West Shaw Avenue. As graciously offered by Central Distributing in the past, this extraordinary facility will support the culinary artistry of the best executive chefs and firehouse cooks in the Valley where the finest of cuisine will be prepared before guests and sampled by all in attendance. Admission is $35 per person and tickets can be purchased from FFCF board members and Central Distributing.
Established in 1877, the Fresno Fire Department is one of the oldest and most recognized in the United States. The FFCF was established to address the unmet needs of fire prevention, protection, and community outreach. The focus of the FFCF is to raise funds for educational programs and to assist those who have suffered loss due to fire or other significant life-altering incident.
The success of this event allows the FFCF to support several worthy local causes, such as the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundations Champ Camp, Trauma Intervention Program (TIP), and the Helmets are Cool program throughout all Fresno and Central Unified elementary schools. Epicurean Delights depends entirely on the support of generous individuals and organizations in the community.
Come out for a day of great food prepared by local chefs, amazing silent auction and raffle items, and get to know the Fresno Fire Chief's Foundation a little better!
The FFCF appreciates your consideration in joining its team of community partners (Table Mountain Casino, American Ambulance, PG&E, Granville Homes, Lennar Properties, Geil Enterprises and Kashian Development to name a few) by contributing to this event either by purchasing a ticket or making a donation. If you would like more information about becoming an event sponsor at Epicurean Delights, or an FFCF member, please contact Central Distributing at 559-276-1500.

Appeals court revives California ban on foie gras 'It's like a parent taking away a toy'
A federal appeals court has revived a California state law banning the sale of foie gras made from force-fed birds.
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned a January 2015 lower court ruling striking down the law, saying the judge erred in concluding that the ban conflicted with a federal law governing the production of poultry products.
Friday's 3-0 decision by the Pasadena-based appeals court is a victory for animal rights advocates opposed to force-feeding.
The decision is also a defeat for chefs who say they enjoy preparing foie gras, while luxury-minded diners enjoy eating it.
It's like a parent taking away a toy, said Phillip Frankland Lee, the owner of Scratch Bar & Kitchen in Encino, California and a former contestant on the Top Chef reality TV show. It will be something that's missed by the guests.
Prized by gourmands for its rich flavors, foie gras is the liver of specially fattened ducks or geese, and often used to make pate.
California's law prohibits the sale of birds that are force-fed to enlarge their livers, It was passed in 2004 and originally took effect in 2012.
The law had been challenged by a group of Canadian duck and geese producers, the Association des Eleveurs de Canards et d'Oies du Quebec; Hudson Valley Foie Gras in Ferndale, New York; and Hot's Restaurant Group in Los Angeles.
They made a mistake, said Marcus Henley, Hudson Valley's manager.
The office of California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, which defended the law, had no immediate comment.
In January 2015, U.S. District Judge Stephen Wilson in Los Angeles agreed with the law's opponents that the federal Poultry Products Inspection Act preempted it.
But in Friday's decision, Circuit Judge Jacqueline Nguyen said California was simply trying to ban a feeding method it deemed cruel and inhumane.
She said this posed no conflict with the federal law, even if it effectively banned foie gras in the state.
Nothing in the federal law or its implementing regulations limits a state's ability to regulate the types of poultry that may be sold for human consumption, Nguyen wrote.
Jared Goodman, a lawyer for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, said the decision prohibits selling diseased livers of birds force-fed by jamming tubes down their throat and pumping concentrated food down their esophagus. This is truly torture and unimaginable cruelty.

PHILOSOPHY - History: Epicurus’ Cure for Unhappiness [HD]
In this video, Monte Johnson (University of California, San Diego) discusses the “tetrapharmakos” or “four-part remedy” developed by the ancient Greek philosopher Epicurus (341-270 BC) and his followers to treat unhappiness and anxiety. The tetrapharmakos consists of four maxims which encapsulate the Epicurean outlook on god, life, death, pleasure, and pain. The maxims can be meditated upon in order to alleviate worries and concerns that continue to plague us as much as they did the ancients.

Ahwahnee Hotel Tour & Review | California Travel Tips
Veronica Hill tours the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite National Park in this episode of California Travel Tips.
Opened on July 14, 1927, the Ahwahnee is Yosemite's most luxurious accommodations. Its grand public rooms have hosted presidents and royalty, and today it remains one of Yosemite's top attractions.
Free walking tours of the Yosemite Ahwahnee are offered throughout the year, highlighting the hotel's history, architecture and legends.
According to Interpretive Services guide Andrew West, the Ahwahnee lodge served as inspiration, but not the filming site of The Shining.
Named for the Ahwahneechee Indians who once inhabited this valley, the Ahwahnee combines Native American, Art Deco, and Arts & Crafts styles.
Don't miss the gorgeous stained glass panels in the Great Lounge, or the original rubber tile mosaics found on the lobby floor. Middle Eastern rugs, German Gothic chandeliers and Native American baskets add to the eclectic look.
Every fall, the hotel hosts its annual Vintners Holidays, drawing top winemakers from throughout the state.
This epicurean event, which precedes the hotel's Chef's Holidays and Bracebridge Dinner, features wine tasting, informative seminars, and grand 5-course meal in the historic Ahwahnee Dining Room.
With its 34-foot ceiling, huge floor-to-ceiling windows and sugar pine beams, the Ahwahnee dining room is one of the most beautiful restaurants in the world. Chef Percy Whatley leads the culinary team, with expertly prepared American cuisine using farm-fresh ingredients.
Most of the Ahwahnee hotel rooms, suites and cottages have stunning views of the valley — and WiFi is free for hotel guests. For a true splurge, book one of their private cabins along the Merced River, or an Ahwahnee suite — just like Queen Elizabeth II did during her visit in 1983.
Conveniently located just 1 mile east of Yosemite Village, Ahwahnee is close to the center of action.
Start your day with free coffee in the Mezzanine, followed by breakfast in the hotel Awhwahnee Bar.
Then, hop on the free Valley Shuttle, which leaves right from the Ahwahnee Yosemite parking lot. It stops at the Visitor Center, historic Curry Village, Yosemite Lodge and Yosemite Falls.
After a day of sightseeing, return to the Yosemite Ahwahnee Hotel for a quick dip in the heated swimming pool, followed by a crisp glass of wine by the grand fireplace. I can't think of a better way to end a day in Yosemite.
Ahwahnee Hotel Reservations should be made at least 5 months and up to one year in advance. Ahwahnee reservations can be made by calling (801) 559-5000 or visiting YosemitePark.com. The Ahwahnee Hotel phone number is (209) 372-1407.
The Ahwahnee Hotel Yosemite is located at 1 Ahwahnee Road, Yosemite National Park, CA 95389.

101 Lower Walden, Carmel Highlands CA 93923
Majestic Retreat Located in The Beautiful Carmel Highlands, California:
The Lower Walden Story;
This unique property was purchased in 2002 with endless opportunities in mind when it comes to the evolution of the home as it stands today. The ground-up remodel created by masters from all over California, was completed in 2008 leaving no detail behind and creating a refuge in the Carmel Highlands that is unlike anything available. Hand-crafted throughout, the detailed workmanship brings Carmel living to life in a Mediterranean setting. One cannot help but feel right at home in a secluded paradise that features resort-like amenities minutes from Carmel.
Coastal living is where one finds themselves, as you navigate life inside the home. Immediately you are drawn to the views of the Pacific Ocean, a view seen through large panoramic windows that lie throughout. The home sits on a sun belt featuring sun soaked days, bringing warmth and relaxation. As you explore the top floor, you find yourself in a spacious kitchen built for aspiring chefs and entertaining. The open floor plan weaves in and out of rooms that feature hand-laid pecan floors that originated from a skilled master from Holland. In addition to the custom pecan floors, travertine tiles are placed throughout the home creating a synergy between the carefully sculpted plastered walls, dome-shaped ceilings that feature special lighting designed specifically for the space coupled with hand laid tile designs that are disbursed throughout. In the living room above the fireplace, a stone sculpture of Zeus’ bust is set, bringing a touch of old world to life. A master bedroom is included on the first floor with a French balcony and lastly a crow’s nest with breathtaking ocean views. As you go down the curved pecan staircase lined with a wrought iron railing that features hand-crafted twists and turns that complement the staircase, you find yourself amongst 2 guest bedrooms and another master bedroom that is stunning in design from its spa-like features that truly set the space apart. The best hidden secret downstairs is the 1,000 plus bottle wine cellar. As you open the hand carved castle doors you immediately walk into every wine enthusiast’s dream. One feels they are in an 18th century wine cellar from Italy. The cellar is eco-friendly, requiring no temperature control as it was built sub-terranean. There is also plenty of space to host your own wine tastings, bringing the space to life.
As you go outside of the main residence, you find a sprawling space that features lush gardens, sounds of the cascading waterfall that lines the side of the main home, pool with bountiful lounge space and lastly a tennis court. With recreation options on the grounds you will find it hard to leave and something not readily available when living the Carmel coastal lifestyle. In addition to the main house there are two garages that can house a total of 5 cars, and two guest residences that offer features similar to the amenities found in the main residence.
101 Lower Walden is over 7,000 square feet and nearly 2 acres of coastal living in a resort setting that features breath-taking views of the Pacific Ocean. One can enjoy the convenience of Carmel being 10 minutes away with its boutiques, epicurean dining and artist’s colonies. Access to Monterey and Pebble Beach is only a 15 minute drive.
