NAVIGATION
-Apple Maps on our iPhones did a great job helping us navigate (bring a portable charger as heavy GPS will drain your battery considerably!). However, we found multiple instances where the app led us correctly as the crow flies but not necessarily in consideration of barriers or street crossing challenges. The Newseum was one example of this where we had to stop and ask for directions. The Five Guys closest to the Newseum is in an underground food court and Apple Maps did not alert us of the different elevation.
FOOD TIPS
-Food trucks surround the National Mall and there are multiple fast food restaurants just blocks from the main attractions and within walking distance. We recommend families pack lunches as purchased food expenses can add up quickly! Food is quite expensive in most of the museums.
***Attractions where food cannot be brought in (not even in your bag): Capitol Building
**Attractions where food must be sealed and closed: Smithsonian Museums (excluding the National Zoo, where there are no restrictions),
*Attractions where consuming outside food is prohibited but it is unclear whether it can remain stored in a bag: Newseum,
*Attractions where there are no restrictions on food: Smithsonian National Zoo (no alcohol and trash must be properly disposed of)

African American Life in Washington, DC, Before Emancipation
African American Life in Washington, DC, Before Emancipation
As Washington became the focus of abolitionism before the Civil War, antislavery activists argued that the sight of slavery and slave dealers in the nation’s capital disgraced the nation and its ideals. A panel will explore life before the 1862 Compensated Emancipation Act and discuss the “Slavery and Freedom” exhibit at the Smithsonian’s new National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). Moderated by John W. Franklin of the NMAAHC, panelists include Mark Auslander, Central Washington University; Maurice Jackson, Georgetown University; and NMAAHC curators Nancy Bercaw and Mary Elliott. Presented in partnership with NMAAHC, the DC Commission of African American Affairs, and the DC Commission on Emancipation.

This Grand Experiment: When Women Entered the Federal Workforce in Civil War–Era Washington, DC
The need for soldiers during the Civil War reduced the ranks of male employees in the government. As a result, federal employment was offered to women. As described by Jessica Ziparo in her book This Grand Experiment, women saw this as a rare chance to obtain well-paid, challenging work. Despite discrimination, prejudice, and harassment, women persisted and succeeded in making their presence in the federal workforce permanent. A book signing will follow the program.

FBI makes revelation as Nigerian bags jail term for $1m fraud - Daily Post Nigeria
Emeka Ndukwu, 46, a Nigerian-American based in Maryland, has been sentenced to four years in prison for engaging in business e-mail scheme and conspiring to launder more than $900,000 proceeds of scams. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), in a statement, said Ndukwu tricked seven companies in the United States and abroad into wiring more than $900,000 into accounts controlled by various co-conspirators. “A co-defendant, Chuka Mbonu, 33, of Nigeria, remains at large,” the U.S. authorities said. FBI said: “Ndukwu, a dual citizen of the United States and Nigeria, pleaded guilty in April 2018 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to one count of money laundering conspiracy. “He was sentenced by the Honourable Timothy J. Kelly. Following his prison term, he will be placed on three years of supervised release. “The judge also ordered Ndukwu to pay $791,870 in restitution to the companies. “Additionally, Judge Kelly ordered Ndukwu to forfeit a 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL450 and to pay a forfeiture money judgment in the amount of $429,848, representing the share of the criminal proceeds that Ndukwu personally obtained”. According to documents filed at the time of the plea, Ndukwu participated in an ongoing conspiracy from 2013 through 2017 to receive and launder the proceeds of various cyber frauds, primarily arising from business e-mail (“BEC”) compromise schemes. “This particular conspiracy targeted at least seven companies in the United States and overseas, including victims in Texas, Illinois, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, India, Japan, and China. “The victims were fraudulently induced into sending $916,056 in wire transfers to accounts controlled by Ndukwu and other co-conspirators. “The funds were then laundered through transactions conducted in Washington, D.C. and other jurisdictions, including layering through shell company accounts and accounts controlled by co-conspirators,” the FBI said. According to the court documents, Ndukwu used false aliases and forged Nigerian passports to facilitate these schemes, and he used encrypted messaging to communicate with co-conspirators. Ndukwu was indicted in December 2017 and has been in custody since his arrest that month. The case is being prosecuted by the FBI’s Washington Field Office, with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service for the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Christopher Brown and Michael Marando are prosecuting the case, with assistance from Paralegal Specialist C. Rosalind Pressley, while former Assistant U.S. Attorney Natalia Medina participated in investigating the case.

EXPLOSIVE! Hillary, The Movie: The Politics of Personal Destruction [FULL HD MOVIE]
EXPLOSIVE DOCUMENTARY! Hillary: The Movie is a political documentary about past United States Senator and failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. It was produced by the conservative non-profit organization Citizens United. The producers went to U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to get a declaration that they could show this movie. This case was titled Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission and its final decision at the U.S. Supreme Court resulted in a major change in campaign finance law.
The documentary interviewed various conservative figures such as Dick Morris and Ann Coulter and reviewed various scandals in which Hillary Clinton participated, such as the White House travel office controversy, White House FBI files controversy, Whitewater controversy, and cattle futures controversy.
The factual finding of the three-judge district court was that there was no reasonable interpretation [of the movie] other than as an appeal to vote against Clinton, thus making it electioneering communication.
The Supreme Court did not change that decision, but applied the strict scrutiny test for the First Amendment of the Constitution and said corporations could not be banned from making electioneering communications.

Now they're being held because they have no immigration right to come into the US. And, it's true that somebody who tried to get into the US and knocked on the door and doesn't have a visa, isn't entitled to get in. But, somebody who was put in chains, hooded, goggled, put in an airplane, dragged by the military to a prison from which he has no other escape, we say you have to turn him loose. And, that's the clash in the case.

If you're talking about resolving the problem of Guantanamo, we need something more. We need the other two branches of government to step up, particularly when you consider the force of the government's argument today, which was, 'nobody can make us turn these people loose, unless some other country does it, we don't have to do it'.

18. SOUNDBITE (English) George Clarke, Lawyer representing the Uighurs at Guantanamo Bay:
I submit that this investigation should not be focused on placing blame on the military personnel involved in any given decision. Rather, it should be focused on determining what is wrong with the process and how we fix it. As we sit comfortably in this room, our warriors are making detention decisions that seriously affect our national security and their lives. To the extent we can improve the process by which those decisions are made, we owe it both to them and to the next group of innocent men that, like the Uighurs, were unlucky enough to find themselves at the mercy of this great nation.
19. Wide of news conference
STORYLINE:
A US federal appeals court seemed reluctant on Monday to release 17 Turkic Muslims being held without charge at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, questioning whether judges, rather than a president, could order their release into the United States.
In a showdown over presidential power, a three-judge panel of the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit said a judge might have gone too far last month in ordering the US entry of the 17 men, subjects of China who are known as Uighurs.
The three judges suggested the detainees might need to apply formally via the Homeland Security Department, which administers US immigration laws.
That same three-judge panel heard arguments on Monday.
