To the untrained eye they are the places that have awesome economies. They’re the places in Beaver State where people have the best jobs, residents are all above average, and the sun shines the most.

A look inside Jim Belushi's 93-acre cannabis farm in Southern Oregon
Five summers ago, actor and musician Jim Belushi came from Los Angeles to rescue the neglected Elks Lodge picnic grounds in Southern Oregon. He repaired the old structures, built a vacation home on a bend in the Rogue River and became the community's most famous fundraisers. Now he's growing cannabis and he has a plan to save us from opioid addiction, starting with a pop-up pot dispensary in downtown Portland. What drives him? “Quiet time,” said the 64-year-old performer on Sunday while watching fishermen cast from his riverbank, is overrated. Here's a tour of the 93-acre farm in Eagle Point that keeps him so busy.
Next Generation of Family Farmers
Subscribe to our new Food Farmer Earth channel on YouTube:
For more Stories, Food News, and Cooking Fresh videos: As 25% of all Oregon farmland will be up for grabs over the next decade, the future of Oregons family farmers may hang in the balance. According to the latest 2007 Census of Agriculture, the average age of local farmers is 57.5 years, slightly older than the national average. Two central, and interrelated questions: How can we help insure that there are a next generation of family farmers in Oregon? How do we insure that there will be available (and affordable) land for them to farm?

Click to see more details about this home.
This 2-story cute house is located in a Desirable Hobbs Farm neighborhood in Cornelius, right off Tualatin Valley Highway. It was built just 2 years ago and features a total of 2,012 sq.ft. , soaring vaulted ceilings at the entry, 4 bedrooms with a den and 2 full bathroom and a powder room. Open concept family room with a cozy fireplace is perfect for family gatherings. A large island, stainless steel appliances, laminate floors, granite counter tops and a brick-like backsplash create a beautiful and modern kitchen.
Laminate, tile and carpet floors throughout. A guest powder room and a den that could be used as an office are also located on the main floor.
Good-sized bedrooms, a laundry room and 2 full bathrooms are located on the second floor. Three spacious guest bedrooms offer plenty of space for kids or visitors. The master bedroom features tall ceilings and en-suite master bathroom where you’ll appreciate double sinks, tile floors and tiled counter tops, separate shower and a bathtub to unwind and relax after a long day.
The City of Cornelius is located only 26 miles west of Portland and 10 miles east of the Coast Range; it is a small but thriving town just discovering its potential. At first glance, Cornelius is an agricultural paradise, with rolling hillsides, vineyards and farms abound. However, those in the know have discovered that beneath the rural exterior, Cornelius is a home to hidden gems and world-renowned amenities, such as world-class wineries and one of the oldest golf courses in the Pacific Northwest.
This home qualifies for a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) loan. As a part of its Rural Development program, the USDA invested almost $20 billion in 2014 to help many families buy and improve their homes. The USDA guarantees a mortgage issued by a participating local lender — similar to FHA- and VA-backed loans — allowing you to get a low interest rate, even without a down payment. These loans or outright financial awards permit homeowners to repair or upgrade their homes. Packages can also combine a loan and a grant, providing up to $27,500 in assistance.

Why the Farm Bill Matters: From Oregon to Africa
Presented on September 21, 2007
Earl Blumenauer
On Friday, September 21, City Club welcomes Congressman Earl Blumenauer to address local and international implications of proposed changes to the federal farm bill.
Dating back to the 1930s, farm bills have set U.S. agricultural policy, affecting international trade, environmental preservation, food safety and the wellbeing of communities. Currently, less than one-tenth of 1 percent (0.01 percent) of total federal farm bill expenditures benefit Oregon farmers. Critics contend that current policies bestow benefits on a few large farmers; do little to ensure that family farms stay competitive; and disregard the health, nutrition and environmental needs of rural communities.
Congressman Blumenauer will share his thoughts on the bill as it advances to the Senate this month. According to Blumenauer, through changes to the farm bill, Congress has an opportunity to better support Oregon farmers; promote access to healthy foods, clean air and water; and help overcome poverty at home and abroad. Blumenauer has represented Oregon’s 3rd congressional district since 1996. Before that he was Multnomah County Commissioner (1979–87), Portland City Commissioner (1987–96).
Family Quits City Life to Live Off-Grid in a Giant Yurt
Lucy is living off-grid with her family, in a yurt, in New Zealand, while unschooling their kids, running a farm, and freelancing as a digital nomad.

I first discovered Lucy's awesome blog and YouTube channel while I was searching for information about how to stop using shampoo; and I ended up buying her awesome eBook about it (link below if you want to go no-poo too!), and I haven't used shampoo in a year and a half.
Happy Hair eBook:
I loved her videos about living off-grid in a New Zealand yurt, and still watch all of her parenting videos even though we don't have kids ourselves. We highly recommend checking out her videos!
The family quit their jobs, sold their home, and sold most of their belongings, and left London to go live off-grid in a tiny house a.k.a. a yurt in New Zealand.
They earn an income through Lucy's freelance writing work, and by renting their smaller yurt on Airbnb, and they also plan to earn an income from their farm once they've had more time to get it up and running.
Lucy and Tim currently unschool their two children, which is a an educational method and philosophy that advocates learner-chosen activities as a primary means for learning.

Health Care: Northwest Migrant Families in Crisis
Presented on January 22, 1993
Tina Castanares, M.D., staff physician and co-founder, La Clinica del Carino Family Health Care Center, Hood River, Oregon
As debates about our flagging health care system and the Oregon Health Plan play out on the national level, Dr. Tina Castanares addresses the needs of an expanding and largely under-represented population here at home: Hispanic migrant farmworkers.
While the faces change, the problems of the migrant community remain the same: temporary, unsanitary living conditions, exposure to harmful pesticides, no health care benefits and, for most, no access to government assistance like Medicaid.
Dr. Castanares is the staff physician at La Clinica del Carina, a nonprofit clinic treating Hispanic migrant workers and their families. In her discussion, co-sponsored by Hispanics in Unity for Oregon, Dr. Castanares will explain the health care problems facing this community and outline the resources available to migrant farmworkers and their families.
