The von Celsing Family History and the 18th Century Collection of Ottoman art at Biby
Anna-Sophia von Celsing
PhD candidate, Uppsala University, Sweden.
Abstract :
The von Celsing collection of Turkish paintings and artefacts was assembled by three members of the family, Gustaf Celsing the elder (1679-1743), his two sons, Gustaf the younger (1723-1789), and Ulric (1731-1805), during their service as Swedish diplomats in Constantinople, Turkey in the 18th century. This collection provides a unique document of persons, architecture and landscape of Constantinople and illustrates the topography of city and the banks of the Bosphorus at the time. The collection was transferred to Biby in Sweden, a mansion in the countryside, outside Stockholm acquired, by the two brothers in 1781. The collection of 103 paintings and objects was housed, together with their diplomatic correspondence, for 230 years at Biby. This presentation will describe the history of the three diplomats, their heirs and the environment in which this unique collection existed and remained intact for eight generations of the von Celsing family.

Crowds view cloak worn by Prophet Muhammad
(6 Jun 2017) LEADIN:
A mantle said to have belonged to the Prophet Muhammed is on display in Istanbul.
Around a million Muslims are expected to visit the relic during Ramadan, the only time of the year the public are able to view it.
STORYLINE:
One by one, they file past the ancient relic.
This is an emotional moment for the visitors as they catch a quick glimpse of the cloak allegedly worn by the Prophet Muhammad, Islam's most revered figure.
Known as the Holy Mantle, it is more than a thousand years old and is believed to have been gifted from the Prophet to Uwais al-Qarani, a Muslim mystic from Yemen.
Muslims only have a short time to lay eyes on this revered item. It's on display at Hirka-i Serif mosque from the first Friday of the Ramadan month to the Night of Decree, as also known as Laylat al-Qadr, the night when the first verses of the Quran are believed to be revealed to the Prophet Muhammad.
But during that time, around one million people from across Turkey and even from abroad will visit the mantle.
They are visiting, feeling, saluting his relics, but essentially, they are meeting with him there, says Baris Samir who claims to be the 59th great-grandson of Uwais al-Qarani and has inherited the mantle.
You also had the opportunity to see in there most of the people are bursting into tears; it's a very spiritual place.
The mantle has been preserved by Samir's family for centuries. It was brought to Anatolia, then Istanbul after Uwais al-Qarani died. Today, it is still kept by the descendants of al-Qarani, and is secured and maintained through a foundation.
A cap and belt that belonged to Uwais al-Qarani as well as hairs believed to be from the Prophet Muhammad's beard are also shown in the mantle's glass case.
We, as Muslims, we will get emotional when we hear the voice of Prophet Muhammad, when we see him, when we see his footprint, visitor Kadriye Mistir.
We are describing this place as a place where people, where Muslims are meeting with our Prophet Muhammad, says Baris Samir, 43, the inheritor of the mantle.
Large crowds queue at the entrance of the mosque to see the relics.
In Islam, veneration of Muhammad's relics is a religious ritual.
Others relics, another mantle of the Prophet Muhammad and his personal belongings are kept in Istanbul's Topkapi Palace Museum.

| First impressions from Contemporary Istanbul 2010 art fair.
More info:
The opening of the Contemporary Istanbul 2010 art fair was incredibly crowded, too crowded in fact to shoot any video. So VernissageTV came back at the next day to take a look at the fair and talk with some art dealers and gallerists. In the video above, which is an excerpt, Bettina Krogemann speaks with the Director of Gallery X-ist (Istanbul), Kerimcan Güleryüz, who talks about his impressions of the fair and one of his favorite pieces he presents at the fair. The full-length video (coming soon at ) features interviews with Anemone Vostell, Managing Director of the Galleries Association of Berlin (LVBG); Frank Pages of Galerie Frank Pages, Baden-Baden (Germany); Boris Brockstedt of Galerie Brockstedt, Berlin; and Anna von Bodungen of Berlin Art Projects, Berlin.

NON is pleased to announce Berlin-based artist Johannes Vogl's first solo show in Istanbul between December 9 -- 28, 2011.
Bringing a self-consciously absurd approach to art, nature and social interactions, Vogl's current show presents new installations the artist produced during his residency program in Istanbul.
Column of Steam (2011) a sculptural work drawing its inspiration from the omnipresent Turkish practice of tea drinking, casts traditional family structures in a light that is both humorous and precarious. A tower of teapots stacked one upon another up to the ceiling boils without end over a stove plugged into a gas tank on the gallery's floor. Collected by the artist from various families, these teapots reflect the complexity of family relations in Turkish society; while each pot can draw warmth from those below it, all of them run the risk of toppling should any of the others be disturbed. And, of course, one is tempted to ask whether this is really the most reasonable way to make a large amount of tea.
The artist inherited a passion for invention from his grandfather and many of his works reflect his fascination with making machines. One such invention featured in the exhibition, titled The Night (2008), is a slide projector designed by Vogl to project onto the gallery wall a moving image of the moon that completes its cycle every three hours. As with some of Vogl's previous inventions, the piece represents a curious duplication of natural reality that recalls many of the strange uses to which human creativity is put in the contemporary era. The Swarm (2011), a somewhat stranger mechanism that cycles dried fish around a vertical structure and casts their shadows on the wall, approaches the question of nature and technology from yet another perspective.
Another work, the installation Sleepers (2011) consists of several videos of dogs sleeping on the streets of Istanbul at night. Instead of duplicating natural reality, this work focuses on the urban, making viewers look more closely at a scene they might very well encounter on their way home from the gallery. Finally, a photographic piece titled Father and Son (2008) has damaged candleholders standing in for an actual father and son.
Johannes Vogl is a German artist born in Kaufbeuren in 1981. He has studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe, the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, and the University of the Arts Berlin. His previous group exhibitions include Under Destruction (2011), Swiss Institute, New York City; The Moment Pleasantly Frightful (2011), Laura Bartlett Gallery, London; Under Destruction (2010) Tinguely Museum Basel; Raw Cases (2010), Siemens Sanat, Istanbul; Deceitful Moon (2009), The Hayward Gallery Project Space, London; Everything solid... turns into thin air (2009) MuHKA, Antwerp; Manifesta 7 (2008), Rovereto and solo exhibitions include Johannes Vogl (2011), Kunstverein Hildesheim, Hildesheim; Johannes Vogl (2011), Galerie Matthew Bown, Berlin; Johannes Vogl (2009), Galerie Martin Janda, Vienna.
The exhibition is kindly supported by the Berlin Senate Cultural Affairs Department, BM Contemporary Art Center and Melih Görgün.

The Look From Istanbul - G52cube Stencil Art
In the summer of 2011 I was fortunate enough to be a part of the Summer At Sea voyage to the Mediterranean Sea. Starting in The Bahamas and then traveling to Spain, Italy, Greece, Croatia, Bulgaria, Turkey, and finally Morocco. While traveling I became part of a family of friends that traveled the path less taken. While on this path we met some incredible people and saw some amazing things. While in Istanbul, Turkey Jes caught a glimpse into the life of a local woman wearing the local garb. We never got the woman's name but the photograph speaks for itself.

Continuity Error in Istanbul | Exhibitions | Showcase
Back in the 1990s, the names Aydan Murtezaoglu and Bulent Shangar were synonymous with Turkey's growing contemporary art scene, but where are they now? An exhibition in Istanbul's newly re-opened SALT Beyoglu is letting us know what they've creatively been up to. Showcase's Miranda Atty has the story.
