The cave is critical habitat for critically endangered grey nurse sharks (Carcharias taurus), and divers encounter these sharks year-round, sometimes in large numbers. In addition to the majestic grey nurse, you can also expect to see wobbegongs, turtles, and moray eels.

We spent four days diving with South West Rocks Dive Centre in NSW, Australia. We had a great time diving with loads of Grey Nurse Sharks, AKA Sand Tiger Sharks, AKA Ragged Tooth Sharks. There were also lots of Wobbegongs and a fantastic cave filled with life.

FISH ROCK CAVE SCUBA DIVING (SOUTH WEST ROCKS) | APRIL 2016
In April 2016, I decided to go to Fish Rock Cave at South West Rocks for some amazing scuba diving.
Fish Rock Cave is a small cave system where Grey Nurse sharks and other fish species can be found (but not always.)
Sometimes, so I am told, you can be swimming into the narrow cave system while these Grey Nurse sharks are swimming in the opposite direction. This usually startles the unsuspecting diver! This was the main reason I signed up to do this dive.
Unfortunately, there was very little activity inside the cave but there were many Grey Nurse sharks hanging around at the exit point of Fish Rock Cave. I managed to take some close shots of these incredible beasts.
There is also a fish feeding frenzy with a Grouper that you'll get to see in the video.

Diving Fish Rock Cave at South West Rocks with GoPro Black Hero 3+
A must do dive when travelling the east coast of Australia. Fish Rock Cave is located off the coast of South West Rocks, which is about 90min south of Coffs Harbour New South Wales Victoria.
South West Rocks Dive Centre are one of the local dive operators and in our books the team to go with. Great crew with plenty of boats to ensure you don't miss out. They also have very affordable prices on quality gear hire which includes free Nitrox. They can even put you up if you need a place to stay.
Typically the dive master will be leading with no-one taking up the rear, so once your committed it's not going to be easy to communicate for their assistance until well into the cave. So though this site is classed as an OW certified, you would still want quite a few dives under your belt and be very comfortable in reasonably tight environments.
Unfortunately conditions let us down right at the last minute. All week had perfect conditions with light wind and seas, not so on this dive and the warm blue clear water had moved on. But we were lucky enough to get a patch just at the cave's exit point.
I won't go into all the detail of the cave here, best you check out the dive centre's web site, which has excellent information. However look closely at 1:50sec for the Eagle Ray sleeping on top of the large Wobby Gong shark nose to tail.
Regardless of the water conditions, it's an amazing experience to do the cave and to be able to swim so close with the grey nurse sharks that cruise about this site.

Scuba Diving South West Rocks - Australia
Diving the famous Fish Rock Cave, which a 30 minute boat ride from the small town of South West Rocks on the Mid-North Coast of New South Wales, on the East Coast of Australia. Typical Australian naming conventions there, every compass direction mentioned in the description. The cave is about 125m long, starting at a depth of 24 meters and finishing in a gully at about 12 meters. Tons of fish and shark action. We got bumped by a wobbegong shark in the cave as it started to swim in between myself and Charlie in a narrow area of the cave. That event certainly got the blood pumping.
We dived with South West Rock Dive Centre and stayed in their accommodation above the dive centre. They are a super friendly and efficient operation.
One downer of the trip was seeing how many on the sharks carry battle scars from fishing tackle. Look closely as there are a number of sharks in the footage with hooks in their mouths.
