Slave History of Charleston
The old slave quarters of the Aiken family reveal many stories of slave life and culture in Charleston in the 19th century. Ironworking and the ability to cultivate rice are two of the many technical skills the slaves brought to the United States, contributing to Charleston's economic and rich cultural development.

Free and Enslaved Blacks In Charleston
From May 28th to May 31st, Professor Heather Williams' History 378 Class, Slavery and Place: The South Carolina Case, traveled to Charleston, South Carolina to learn more about slavery in the American South. Students had to create a group project detailing certain highlights of the trip.
Author, historian, and history professor Damon L. Fordham tells the story of Robert Smalls, the former slave who heroically freed himself and his family and also changed the course of South Carolina history in a rarely told story. Filmed in Mt. Pleasant, SC, September 13, 2015. This story is also told in Mr. Fordham's book Voices of Black South Carolina. He is also available for speaking engagements.
