An Unexpected Ferry Ride In the Mammoth Cave National Park: Green River
An Unexpected Ferry In the Mammoth Cave National Park - We just wanted to get to the scenic drive within the national park and we came up to a road which ended in water! And then finally figured out that we have to take a ferry to cross the street (basically). The Green River flows through it. Very cool experience and a total surprise.
We have never been in a ferry which can only fit 2 cars. We have been in much bigger barges but not these small ones. However, I know the road is within the national park, but I think it is also used my locals to get to the next county. I think taking the ferry is the fastest way. It is managed by the National Park Service.
After the crossing the Green river ferry (for the first time), we drove on the one-way scenic drive. The leaves were still golden brown from the winter. Although, I think the roads weren't well maintained. There were many potholes that needs repair, so if you guys are going here, better have a good car :-). This scenic drive takes you around the forest within the national park. While driving, think how the longest cave in the world is under you.
Mammoth Cave has over 400 miles of explored tunnels and researchers, rangers and scientists are still exploring. They estimate there is really approximately 600 miles of caves down there. Wow.
After going to the north side of the park and the scenic drive, we went back to the Green River ferry station, so we can ride it back. This time, we knew what to do :-). It is open until 10pm.
Green River Ferry is the only operational ferry in all of Edmonson County after Houchin's Ferry went out of service in October 2013.
WHO ARE WE?
We, Irwin and Victorina, have decided to quit our jobs, sell everything we have and go on an epic road trip of visiting all U.S. National Parks! Follow our journey - from letting go of our material possessions, preparing for the extended camping trip, and even the mistakes, joys, doubts and adventures we make along the way! We hope to inspire others to appreciate the beauty of Planet Earth.
Adventure begins in Feb 2017. We estimate this road trip will take us approximately 12 to 16 months. We know we will some amazing places and meet a lot of interesting people.
If you have an idea or suggestions for us for places to visit along the way, feel free to contact us!
NEW VIDEOS every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. If we miss a day, it is probably because we had no phone signal inside the park or we couldn't find any wifi access. If this is the case, we will upload our video as soon as we get any phone signal.
