Japanese artist's Yayoi Kusama's polka dots arrive in Jakarta
(25 May 2018) LEADIN:
Indonesia's first contemporary art museum has launched a new exhibition that will leave you seeing spots.
The new show features work by the celebrated Japanese contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama and her trade mark polka dots.
STORYLINE
Indonesia's first-ever museum fully dedicated to contemporary art, MACAN is causing plenty of buzz on Jakarta arts scene.
Its latest exhibition is called Life is the Heart of a Rainbow, and showcases 70 years of work by Yayoi Kusama, regarded as the most important living Japanese contemporary artist.
Kusama was born in 1929 and, despite her parents' objection, studied art at Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts before moving to New York in 1957 to pursue greater artistic freedom.
During Kusama's time in New York, she became associated with the Pop Art movement alongside Claes Oldenburg, George Segal and Andy Warhol.
She suffered episodes of hallucination since her childhood and eventually relocated to Tokyo in 1977, admitted herself to a mental institution, and continued her work at a nearby studio, where she still works today.
Some of the reasons why we were interested in presenting her work is that Kusama's practice is one that spans nearly 70 years, and she really is an icon of contemporary art. And her work has transcended into the popular culture and into the popular imagination, says Aaron Seto, Museum MACAN's director.
MACAN stands for Modern Art and Contemporary Art in Nusantara, which opened last November.
130,000 people came in the first 4 months of its inaugural exhibition, with an average of more than 1,000 daily visitors.
Nusantara is the Indonesian word for homeland.
The museum is open to the public 6 days a week and it has launched a successful programme to encourage Indonesians, from all walks of life, to come to the museum and enjoy art with their family and friends.
Life is the Heart of a Rainbow is only the second exhibition at the museum.
The museum offers a series of art workshops for both children and adults as part of its education initiatives.
In the future, Seto believes that the museum will continue to bring bigger and more diverse exhibitions of modern art from Indonesia and all over the world.
We are able to present different kinds of work that hasn't really been presented in Indonesia before. I mean we are able to work at a scale like this. This is a major exhibition of Kusama which has over 130 works on this place, he says.
Kusama's exhibition has shown that she continues to be a prolific artist even in her older years.
She started a series of My Eternal Soul paintings in 2009 and has created more than 500 paintings to date.
But Kusama is most well known for her obsession with polka dots and pumpkins.
Benny Raharjo, an Indonesian art expert from the Masterpiece Auction House, argues that Kusama has successfully brought Asian contemporary art to the world stage through her originality.
Yayoi is a groundbreaking artist. Before her time, people could not imagine a pumpkin as a great work of art. She has transformed images of pumpkins and flowers into her art, and she makes them with her signature style of polka dots, he says.
Some of Kusama's installations are particular crowd pleasers due to their fun and interactive nature.
The I Want to Love on a Festival Night installation invites visitors to look into a mirrored box with colourful lights and take pictures.
Others are drawn in by the social media impact of the museum.

Stunning Style Houses, Where the Craftsmen's Intelligence is Infinite to Resist the Harsh Weather
Stunning Traditional Style Houses, Where the Craftsmen's Intelligence is Infinite to Resist the Harsh Weather.
Shirakawa-go is located in the north-western part of Gifu Prefecture, in the approximate center of Japan.
In December 1995, Shirakawa-go was registered as the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the “Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama”.
The most unique registration area is the gassho style settlements in Shirakawa Village Ogimachi in Gifu Prefecture.
They are famous for their traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, some of which are more than 250 years old.

Here is a young man who connects Japanese tradition to the future:
Kayabuki Craftsman: Tanaka Eisaku (田中 栄作さん)
Born 1984 in Gifu Prefecture
Teacher: Wada Shigeru (和田 茂さん)
Tanaka-san was born in Shirakawa-go and grew up in a Gassho-style house.
He studied under Wada Shigeru, who was responsible for the restoration of Shirakawa-go's thatch roof, and since then he has been working hard to improve skills.

HOW TO SEE | The Grandmaster of Kung Fu Films: Lau Kar-leung
What makes a true kung fu film? Many directors and actors have been associated with the kung fu genre, Hong Kong cinema’s most unique creation, but no one compares to Lau Kar-leung (1937–2013) as a purist of the genre and the kung fu form.
Associate curator La Frances Hui explores the history of the kung fu films, the actors and filmmakers associated with the genre like Bruce Lee, Gordon Liu, and Jackie Chan, and why Lau Kar-leung has been hailed as the grandmaster of kung fu films.

Miho Museum, Shiga, Japan
Miho Museum was completed in 1996. The architect Dr. I. M. Pei assimilated it beautifully into the surrounding landscape and it is situated near Shigaraki in Shiga prefecture, Japan.
From the bus stop we took the short walk through the incredible tunnel to the museum and caught the museum's little bus back.
Filming of the museum was permitted but understandably not the exhibitions. The exhibition we saw is , ''The Beauties of Japanese Glass: Bindeisha Collection.''

TeamLab Boarderless:

Yayoi Kusama – Obsessed with Polka Dots | Tate
The nine decades of artist Yayoi Kusama’s life have taken her from rural Japan to the New York art scene to contemporary Tokyo, in a career in which she has continuously innovated and re-invented her style.
Well-known for her repeating dot patterns, her art encompasses an astonishing variety of media, including painting, drawing, sculpture, film, performance and immersive installation. It ranges from works on paper featuring intense semi-abstract imagery, to soft sculpture known as ‘Accumulations’, to her ‘Infinity Net’ paintings, made up of carefully repeated arcs of paint built up into large patterns.
Since 1977 Kusama has lived voluntarily in a psychiatric institution, and much of her work has been marked with obsessiveness and a desire to escape from psychological trauma. In an attempt to share her experiences, she creates installations that immerse the viewer in her obsessive vision of endless dots and nets or infinitely mirrored space.
At the centre of the art world in the 1960s, she came into contact with artists including Donald Judd, Andy Warhol, Joseph Cornell and Claes Oldenburg, influencing many along the way. She has traded on her identity as an ‘outsider’ in many contexts – as a female artist in a male-dominated society, as a Japanese person in the Western art world, and as a victim of her own neurotic and obsessional symptoms.
After achieving fame and notoriety with groundbreaking art happenings and events, she returned to her country of birth and is now Japan’s most prominent contemporary artist.

????Kyoto ZEN hostel
☕️Weekenders coffee
☕️Me me me
☕️Katte
: me me me 근처의 디저트 카페.
☕️Cafe serge
????Forever modern art museum
????Ichiran
☕️Coffee smart
????Walder

Kyoto, Japan - Ginkaku-ji, Philosophers Path, Honen-in, Heian-jingo, part 2
Ginkaku-ji is one of the prettiest of all of the temples and gardens in Kyoto, Japan. Then we walk the Philosophers Path to Honen-in, followed by Heian-jingo. Ginkaku-ji is in the tsukiyama style of hillside garden. A dramatic entry lined by tall hedges leads into another world, a lyrical dreamscape of ponds surrounded by gardens, dotted with statues and linked together by exquisite bamboo railings that guide you along the very pleasant and calm foot paths.
The Japanese garden is a miniature and idealized view of nature and this style of garden is meant for strolling for moving around from one place to another and as you go there will be scenes revealed and then left behind -- it's hide and reveal, appearing then disappearing.
See more Kyoto movies in our playlist:
Temple gardens are not laid out straight and nor do they have a single focus. Instead the paths are designed with curves and bands and they'll go up and down. It's made to look natural but of course everything here is carefully designed.
Ginkaku-ji is a Zen temple that represents the Higashiyama Culture of the Muromachi period back in the 15th century
The best way to enjoy these gardens without crowds is come in the off-season as we are here in early December, which is really the perfect time to be in the gardens of Kyoto. You have the fall colors still lingering and if you’re here in the middle of the week, especially in early December, there's hardly anybody else around.
We're next taking a stroll on the Philosophers Path. It's just about 1 mile long and very pleasant. You go along this canal and there are gardens, there are private homes, there's a beautiful hillside and more of these lingering fall colors. There are little benches scattered here and there where you could sit down if you wish.
This leads to Honen-in which is a good spot to visit early in the morning because it opens at 7 am and it’s free, so you don't have to worry about the gates being closed when you arrive here at Honen, with images of the Buddha.
Arriving at Heian-jingo, one of the newer temples in Kyoto, built at the end of the 19th century, and of course built in a very traditional style. This kind of architecture really dates back 300, 400 or even 500 years. This reproduction of an Imperial Palace was constructed in 1895, complete with shrines and a vast garden complex with ponds, islands and Chinese-Japanese-style landscaping.
And it’s a very large temple complex with some beautiful gardens out in the back. There are always well-tended paths through the gardens
Notice all of the colors in the trees. We were quite fortunate to be catching the tail end of the fall season. Even though it's the first week of December the weather was fairly moderate, and generally the colors do linger into the early part of December.
Often you have a pond or several ponds like this with pretty reflections of the vegetation.
The temples have wonderful wooden architecture, and yet the gardens all around, probably is even more of an interesting attraction than the buildings themselves.
One reason this grand temple and gardens were created in the late 19th century was in reaction to Kyoto being replaced as the capital of Japan, by Tokyo. For 1000 years Kyoto had been the capital of the country and when the capital was moved to Tokyo in 1868 it caused some decline in the prosperity and mood of the city and this temple was constructed 30 years later as a response of the city to revitalize.
The garden all around the pond is 30,000 square meters in size and divided in four sections with a variety of birds such as kingfishers and large falcons.
Here's a gardener out in a boat reaching some of the areas that are on islands in the middle of the pond.
Afterwards you might take a walk through the public park in front towards the huge metal torii - biggest in town - and consider a visit to the National Museum of Modern Art, with its large collection of paintings and ceramics. The Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art is just behind.
This is part of our series on the temples and gardens of Eastern Kyoto, the Higashiyama district, and also we’ll take you downtown in some of our other videos.

Highway through a Building Story ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Osaka's Gate Tower Building is an amazing sight to see because ... well, how should I put this? A highway goes through the building.
It literally does, and there is a story behind it.
In this episode, John not only goes inside to see where the elevator takes him, he also drives through it -- in a Lotus Seven. We'll also go up the Umeda Sky Building and catch some fantastic angles of the city, skyline and Gate Tower Building.
THE STORY:
Here it is from the building owner.
It’s basically a land rights dispute with a sort of happy ending.
The property was owned by a business (coal and wood company) since the early Meiji era but when business declined, so did the buildings in the 1970s. The area was approved to be redeveloped in 1983 but the property holder refused to give up the land, even though new building permits had been refused to him. The highway corporation and the property owner negotiated for 5 years and what you see today is their compromise. Highways usually buy the land they’re on but a new law in 1989 allowed the possibility of having two owners on the same spot, really meant for highways to go underground but hey – let’s get creative.
The highway is the legal tenant of floors 5 through 7.
The current building tenant on the other floors is TKP.
WHERE IS THE BUILDING WITH THE HIGHWAY THROUGH IT?

Closest Station: JR Fukushima Station
It's one stop away from JR Osaka Station on the Loop Line.
Special thank you to TKP and the building owners for allowing me to film inside the building.
