Funaoka Onsen in Kyoto
Funaoka Onsen was originally a Japanese inn. This building was built in 1924. Funaoka Onsen is registered as a Yukei Bunkazai, a Japanese Tangible Cultural Property.Boy, this place has a lot of history. The ceiling is fantastic, and then we have these wood carving scenes out of history. And then the tiles, and the bright colors -- but look at that ceiling! That's one of the heroes of Kyoto, Ushiwakamaru, and the long-nosed devil. The story goes that the long-nosed devil taught him all his fighting techniques. This public bath is just like an art museum.Look at these decorative tiles. You know, these are more than 100 years old. And it's really, really an atmosphere.
#19 KYOTO: BAMBOO FOREST, ONSEN AND SIGHTSEEING
It was the day we were getting another night bus from Kyoto to Tokyo so this is a pretty chill out vlog at a couple of sightseeing spots in Kyoto. We got another day bus ticket for 500 JPY. This is a great deal as its 280 for 1 journey and we took about 7 this day so a great saving for us.
Kinkakuji Temple was our first stop or otherwise known as the Golden Temple followed by Ryoanji Temple. This is one of the most famous in all of Japan for its Rock Garden. It was beyond us though and from a sightseeing point of view it wasn't for us but we loved the gardens and the surrounding area.
We made our way to the Bamboo Forest which was amazing to walk around and even better because it was free.
It had started to rain by the afternoon and we had an overnight bus to catch so we decided it would be good to have a relax and a freshen up at an onsen. We got there, paid and then the lady told us swimming costumes were not allowed, we had to go in nude. Really we should have asked the question before we paid and we knew some would be naked but we didn't think all of them were.
I don't know what come over us but we decided to do it anyway. It was a moment of madness and we both really enjoyed it at the time but we wouldn't do it again.
So we had some food and headed to the bus station for our ride to Tokyo with Willer Express.
TAKAYAMA || EP 10 || Relaxing in Onsen (Hot Spring Bath) Buffet in Okuhida
Located in Okuhida Onsen Village among the Japanese Alps, Hodakaso Yamano Hotel features 7 public hot-spring baths.
Okuhida is famous for its hot springs, especially so for rotemburo (outdoor baths) with views of the surrounding Northern Japanese Alps.
Let me take you to the hotel's private outdoor baths, which is segregated and mixed gender bathing. We had to take a follicular to get to a secluded onsen.
Will you join me?

Japan: Arashiyama Kyoto Ryokan - Traditional Japanese Hotel Experience! 京都市 旅館
Japanese ryokan! Yay!! It was so nice having a separate bath and toilet as well as having dinner and breakfast inside your room!
The ryokan actually had a separate onsen (hot springs) that was divided into outdoor onsens for women and men. Sadly I couldn't take videos of onsens just in case there were people there who might feel invaded if I brought a camera along...
The onsen water however is also used in all rooms at the hinoki bath tubs! So you can have like 10 baths during your stay ;)
I slept like a baby on the thick plushy futon. I wish I can get one for my house...drool...
Will be back with the actual food experience at the ryokan!
Enjoy!

Kyoto Festival: Fire Ritual in Hirogawara Kyoto (Matsuage)
A countryside tradition that highlights customs of the more rural areas of Japan, Matsu-age festivals are held in three outlying villages in Kyoto during the month of August. This year the Kyoto Fan team headed to a village about an hour north of Kyoto called Hirogawara to take part in their Matsu-age, which has been carefully preserved by the local people for centuries as a ritual to commemorate local fire deity Atago Daimyojin and pray for good crops and the health of the villagers.
Held annually on August 24th, Hirogawara's Matsu-age begins around 8:30 at night. In order to hold the festival a log of Japanese cedar is used to construct a tall pillar about 20m high with a large bundle of kindling on the top. Over the course of the festival the local men hurl flaming torches up at this pillar trying to light it on fire, bring it crashing to the ground, and then stoke the remaining flames until they finally die out in the darkness. Returning back to your modern lives after this timeless celebration from rural Japan will be a challenge!
