Discover the many facets of Indiana native Lew Wallace—bestselling novelist, general, governor, and commissioner in the Lincoln assassination trial—in this new WTIU documentary.
Lew Wallace (1827-1905) played a leading role in America’s military, political, diplomatic, and literary affairs during the 19th century. He was passionate about books and combat and
dreamed of fame on the battlefield. He was the youngest major general in the Union Army and had success fighting Confederate forces at Forts Henry and Donelson. But at the Battle of Shiloh
he found himself in a controversy that haunted him for the rest of his life.
Wallace’s lasting fame ultimately came from writing Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ, one of the most successful books of all time. The story was adapted successfully for the stage, and for the
screen in 1925 and 1959.
Beyond his role as author and a soldier, Wallace was also a lawyer, serving on the commissions that tried two of the most infamous acts of the Civil War; governor of the New Mexico territory where he interacted with the notorious outlaw Billy the Kid; and minister to the Ottoman Empire in Constantinople where he befriended the Sultan.
With the success of Ben-Hur, Wallace settled in Crawfordsville, Indiana, where he constructed his dream study, a place he called “a pleasure-house
for my soul.”

Wallace resigned from the U.S. Army in November 1865 and briefly served as a major general in the Mexican army, before returning to the United States. Wallace was appointed governor of the New Mexico Territory (1878–81) and served as U.S. minister to the Ottoman Empire (1881–85). Wallace retired to his home in Crawfordsville, Indiana, where he continued to write until his death in 1905.

We Must Decolonize Our Museums | Cinnamon Catlin-Legutko | TEDxDirigo
As Cinnamon Catlin-Legutko points out, museums are, historically, intimately tied with colonization practices; this persists today. A large part of Catlin-Legutko's work as a museum administrator is focused on giving voice and the power to direct back to the people whose culture and heritage are represented in the museum, advocating, through practice, for “decolonizing” the museum space.
Cinnamon Catlin-Legutko is a passionate advocate for museums and their intersections with social justice and activism, community development, and memory and remembrance. Prior to joining the Abbe Museum as President/CEO in 2009, Cinnamon was the director of the General Lew Wallace Study & Museum in Crawfordsville, Indiana, where she led the organization to the National Medal for Museum Service. Catlin-Legutko serves on the board of the American Alliance of Museums, the Maine Humanities Council, and the Smithsonian Affiliates Advisory Council. She is president of the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce board and serves on the Island Housing Trust board. Her most recent publication, “Museum Administration 2.0,” was released by Rowman & Littlefield in 2016. Catlin-Legutko received her BA from Purdue University, and is a graduate of the University of Arkansas MA program in anthropology. She is a 2004 graduate of the Seminar for Historical Administration and joined as a faculty member in 2014.

Gift VII Press Conference
In December, MCCF received an incredible gift- a $500,000 grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. as part of the seventh phase of its Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow (GIFT) initiative!
A press conference was held on December 6th to share the great news. We were so glad to have several of our fund owners, donors, and representatives from local nonprofit agencies in attendance. We also deeply appreciated our guest speakers: Judy Wynne, MCCF fund owner and grants committee member; Larry Paarlberg, Director of the General Lew Wallace Study & Museum; Shannon Joyce, MCCF scholarship recipient, and Trey Etcheson from Hoosier Heartland State Bank.
They spoke about the impact of unrestricted funds, the benefits our community receives from MCCF grants, the educational opportunities provided by MCCF scholarships, and the permanence of endowed funds. Watch now to see the full press conference, which was live streamed that morning.
