God's Acre - Salem Moravian Graveyard, NC
God's Acre, located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina has become the traditional name given to the graveyards of Congregations of the Moravian Church. In between God's Acre is the Salem Cemetery so you can visit two historic cemeteries in the same area.
Moravians believe strongly in equality, even in death; therefore, every stone in a God's Acre is a recumbent stone with the same proportions and made of the same material so that no one person stands out among the stones. The Communion of Saints is continued even on the graveyard as it reflects the continuity of the congregation. In addition, the deceased are buried by choir; to the Moravians, these were the living groups into which the Congregation was originally divided to meet the needs of the members according to their age and station in life. Originally men and women sat in their choir groups in church at worship. The burial by choir in God's Acre also reflects the way the members of the congregation sat as a worshipping community so that visually and symbolically the Congregation continues in the graveyard.

Evergreen Cemetery Winston-Salem NC
The New Evergreen Cemetery is located on a 47-acre plot of land located on New Walkertown Road. It was opened in 1944 to take place of the former Evergreen Cemetery, a graveyard on private property owned by James Foy, a prominent African-American farmer. The original graveyard backed up to Smith Reynolds Airport and had to be moved in the early 1940's because the airport needed to expand it's runways in order to ship goods during WWII. The Work Progress Administration helped move 700 graves from the old Evergreen Cemetery to the New Evergreen Cemetery on what is now New Walkertown Road. The Winston-Salem Foundation helped pay for the move, spending about $15,000 to buy the land, grade and surface the roads and pay for the actual relocation of the remains.

St Philips African Moravian Church, Winston-Salem, NC
Constructed 1861 with 1890 addition, restored 2004. Historic St. Philips Church is the oldest African American church still standing in the state of North Carolina and one of the earliest in the entire country. Built for the African American congregation, the church matched most of the other churches in the area built at the same time with the large brick, Greek Revival style.
The church was expanded in 1890 with the need to add more classroom space downstairs and above in the balcony. The church extended out into the graveyard, which later caused structural issues on the front walls.
The congregation moved out of the building in the 1952, and the church sat vacant until restored for use as part of Old Salem Museums & Gardens tours. The steeple, which had been removed in the 1920s was part of the exterior restoration. The original pews and other details are back in place inside the building.

Pinewood/Elmwood Cemetery, Charlotte, NC
A site of one of the many civil rights controversies, the fence separating all white Elmwood Cemetery from all black Pinewood Cemetery was removed in January 1969. With the removal of the fence between Pinewood and Elmwood, the Elmwood Cemetery complex became, essentially, one burial ground. Roads now connect the two cemeteries -- although the Ninth Street entrance is still open, visitors can walk or drive through either entrance and access Elmwood and Pinewood. With over 150 years of funerary art and cultural, economic, and social history in its shady, lush acreage, the Elmwood Cemetery remains a significant part of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.

Haunted Cabe Land Cemetery
After reading an article from Candid Slice about 10 Most Haunted URBEX Spots In North Carolina' I had to start check them out for myself! I started with Cabe Land Cemetery located deep inside the Eno River State Park in Durham, NC. This historic cemetery is known for disembodied voices and EVP's. When I was there I saw a shadow figure walk right past me, of course all of my equipment was still in my backpack and I had no way of documenting what I saw.
