Muir Beach Overlook, California, USA. Miwok,
Muir Beach, California, USA
Heading north on Highway 101, from the Golden Gate Bridge, the small southern Marin town of Muir Beach is just 6 miles from the Highway 1 exit. It's comprised of around 150 homes of mainly full-time occupants, who are lucky enough to enjoy the 2 beaches, the surrounding Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Mt. Tamalpais, nearby Muir Woods National Monument, Green Gulch Farm/Zen Center, Slide Ranch and, of course the old English Pub, The Pelican Inn. This beautiful area is full of wildlife: Monarch butterflies in the pine trees, salmon in Redwood Creek, frogs in the pasture, fox, birds, deer, coyote...! Horses and dogs are usually allowed on the beaches and some trails (but be sure to check with the rangers for updates or changes), the waves are great for boogie boarders and kayakers, the fishing is plentiful, and the star gazing is endless! The Community Center has classes, craft fairs, and can be rented for events, the Fire Department is volunteer and has a fun rock-n-roll fundraiser BBQ each Memorial Day Sunday, the children attend public school in Mill Valley, the zip code is Sausalito's, there's no cable T.V. (but there's Bookmobile and Muir Beach has its own wireless internet) and the pizza guy won't drive the curvy road!
The history is full of Miwok and Portuguese tales, and the current locals are so very pleased to be able to live in such a healthy piece of paradise! It is my pleasure to bring this site to the people of Muir Beach and to those who feel strongly about and connected to its beauty! Please enjoy your visit, comment in the Guest Book or email us, use the services of the locals and come back often!

SUMMARY
=======
Green Gulch Farm Zen Center, or Sōryu-ji (蒼龍寺 Green Dragon Temple) is a Soto Zen practice center located near Muir Beach, California that practices in the lineage of Shunryu Suzuki. In addition to its Zen training program, the center also manages an organic farm and gardens. Founded in 1972 by the San Francisco Zen Center and Zentatsu Richard Baker, the site is located on 115 acres (0.47 km2) in a valley seventeen miles (27 km) north of San Francisco and offers a variety of workshops and classes throughout the year. The land is an inholding of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and has much wildlife within its borders. In addition to meditation retreats, offerings include classes and workshops on the Japanese tea ceremony and gardening. While Green Gulch Farm has a residential monastery and retreat center, guest house, and conference center, it has also become recognized as a place where organic farmers can come to learn the tools of their trade. One of the original architects of the gardens at Green Gulch was the renowned late horticulturist Alan Chadwick—who had introduced the biodynamic farming techniques influenced by Rudolf Steiner on the farm. Chadwick's grave is marked by a stupa on site. Author Fenton Johnson writes that Green Gulch Farm, ...serve[s] as a model for living on the land in the context of a Zen Buddhist practice.

Wise Words From Well-Seasoned Farmers - Chris Bunn & Wendy Johnson—EcoFarm Conference 2018
A traditional EcoFarm Conference session full of wisdom from two long time farmer activists. Learn about the legacy of two long time farmer activists who have contributed much to the world of agriculture.
Chris Bunn, 72, is a second-generation Salinas vegetable grower whose father began shipping Bunny brand lettuce in 1927. His family helped establish the Salinas Valley Vegetable Exchange, a very early example of growers getting together to market as a group. Chris grew up in a very dynamic farming community that has seen huge change over the 100 years. A Farm Bureau board member, he converted a significant portion of his rich Salinas Valley bottomland to organic production of lettuce, celery and brassicas in the 90’s, including “The Farm”, a 15-acre veggie demonstration plot and farmstand just off Highway 68, peppered with large murals by artist John Cerney that depict the largely immigrant labor force responsible for making Monterey County “the Salad Bowl of the World.”
Wendy Johnson, 70, lived and trained at San Francisco Zen Center Green Gulch Farm in Muir Beach, CA from 1975-2000. She is one of the founders of the Organic Farm and Garden Program at Green Gulch, the head gardener for decades, a lay Buddhist dharma teacher, the author of Gardening at the Dragon’s Gate, a garden mentor to the Edible Schoolyard program in Berkeley, College of Marin instructor at the Indian Valley Organic Farm and Garden project, community activist, inspiring speaker and instructor to thousands, and much more.
