Denpasar - capital of Bali, Indonesia
English subs available!
For over a century, Bali has fascinated the Western imagination. The island embodies the very essence of the exotic and mysterious East. Steep hillsides of tropical green reveal terraced rice paddies while plantations of coffee, banana, cacao and fragrant spices line the roads. Monkeys haunt the grounds of a sacred temple in a forest, while traditional villages produce intricately stylized batik, superb jewelry and beautiful paintings. And Balinese dance, with its angular movements and rhythms, remains somehow stirring and shocking. Bali may be accessible, but it remains forever exotic.
Tour from the ship. Description:
Feel the artistic pulse of Bali with this five-hour guided excursion that takes you on an arts and crafts adventure through Denpasar and its surroundings villages. There will be a moderate amount of walking so be sure to wear comfortable shoes.
After boarding your motorcoach, you'll head southwest along the coast. Looking out toward the sparkling waters of the Badung Straight, you'll see the small island of Nusa Penida, home to a bird sanctuary for endangered Balinese and Indonesian bird species, including the critically endangered Bali starling.
After arriving in Denpasar you may be surprised at the hustle and bustle; it is, after all, Bali's capital city with a population of over 500,000 and a thriving economy. Denpasar, which means next to the market, is aptly named.
Being the center of city in the Island there is one of Center Temple name Jagatnatha Temple Dedicated for main God by Hindu in Denpasar . Although it may look like it's been sitting there for centuries it was actually built in the mid-20th century but its symbolism and holiness is just as sacred as those you'll find throughout the country. Across from the temple you can see Puputan Square, which commemorates the suicidal battle of the Badung rajahs against the Dutch militia in 1906.
Next, you'll tour the Museum Negeri Propinsi Bali, more commonly known as the Bali Museum. Inside this stunning example of Balinese architecture you'll find five pavilions filled with over 10,500 exhibits spread out over 28,000 square feet.
Move further from Denpasar to the east there is Art and Traditional Market of Sukawati , the largest Art Market in Bali . Here, you'll find stalls filled with produce of carving, painting, clothing, costumes, household items, and gold and silver jewelry. Haggling and bartering is expected so feel free to join in.
Now, it's on to more shopping in the village of Celuk, known as the gold and silversmith capital of Bali. During your visit you can shop for jewelry in one of the many markets that line the village before we continue our trip to Kemenuh the near by Village.
In the Village. After a warm welcome, you'll be treated to a cup of coffee accompanied with a slice of kue. Sometimes sweet and sometimes savory, this cake is made with 20 thin layers of different flavors and stacked on top of each other and steamed or fried.
Your final stop is the village of Tohpati, considered the center of Balinese hand weaving and handmade batik prints. The roots of batik date back 2,000 years but it was the Balinese who turned it into an art form. After you disembark, you'll tour a local batik factory and watch the entire process ? from stamping the fabric with wax, to dyeing and finally, the finished product.
At the conclusion of your tour, you'll reboard your coach and travel back to your waiting ship.
The bamboo homes of Bali
On the tropical island of Bali, Indonesia, there are homes tucked into the jungle that look like something out of a fairytale. They're designed to have soaring roof lines, few walls or windows - and nearly everything is fashioned from bamboo. Seth Doane reports.

Pasar Senggol, Gianyar, Bali, Indonesia
The night market in Gianyar, Bali, Indonesia, known as Pasar Senggol is an amazing place to eat a range of different Indonesian Balinese street food!
One evening, we headed over to the market at about 5 pm to start eating, and in this video I’ll show you everything I ate on this Balinese street food tour.
Babi guling - Babi guling, or Balinese style roast pig, is one of the ultimate things you have to eat, especially if you enjoy pork, when you’re in Bali. I started the street food tour off with a plate of babi guling. I was alright, but could have been better had it been hot and fresher.
30,000 IDR ($2.20) per plate
Sweets - Along with full meals, you’ll find an abundance of Indonesian street food snacks and desserts. Klepon was my favorite.
1,000 IDR ($0.7) per box
Nasi ayam campur - This stall served one of the best single plates of food I had in Bali, ayam betutu and some mixed chicken all over a plate of rice with all the toppings and mixes. The food was sensational, packed with flavor.
25,000 IDR ($1.84)
Tipat cantok - Similar to another common Indonesian street food called gado gado, tipat cantok includes rice cakes and bean sprouts in a peanut sauce. It was pretty good, and I enjoyed how you could watch her making it in front of you.
7,000 IDR ($0.51)
Serombotan - Finally, to end this Indonesian street food tour in Bali, I had a serving of something called serombotan, a delicious mixture of vegetables and coconut and shrimp paste. It was surprisingly very good and flavorful.
5,000 IDR ($0.37)

Turtle Conservation and Education Centre in Denpasar, Indonesia
Turtle Conservation and Education Centre in Denpasar, Indonesia
Turtle Conservation And Education Center( TCEC) opened by the governors of Bali, Mr Dewa Beratha (20 January 2006) On Serangan island of Bali .TCEC is developed as part of the Comprehensive strategy to eradicate illegal turtle trading on the island .Established on a land of 2.4 hactare, the TCEC is trying to support the community of Serangan to find the alternative beside illegal turtle business. The center harness the potential education, tourism, conservation and research with a liberal sprinkling of business to give endangered turtles one more chance on Serangan. TCEC is supported by WWF, Governor Bali, the major of Denpasar, municipality authorities, the Provincial Nature Resource Conservation Agency and the local community.
The four fundamental aspects to the center including putting a definitive end to turtle trade, by encouraging the public not to consume the turtle products (religious use or otherwise) and to support turtle Conservation in general; providing turtles for rituals without their killing and monitoring turtle size and number, so that their use can be strictly controlled and regulated; offering employment opportunities for locasl from Serangan; and finally acting as watchdog for turtle trade - in Serangan in particular and Bali in general.
The center also directly helps to protect turtles; e.g., by hosting injured animals, collecting nests from tourist beaches and buying eggs from locals ( prevent them from being consumed). The eggs are bred at the center and the hatchlings are raised for about one month and then released into freedom. Out of the seven sea turtle species, three are kept and raise at the center.
What’s not to like about seeing cute baby turtles being given a good start in life and older injured ones nursed back from ill-health?
The Turtle Conservation and Education Centre (TCEC) at Serangan Island south of Sanur is doing both those things plus the important job of educating both the local community and schoolkids to help end the turtle trade and support conservation. Turtle meat (and eggs) has long being consumed in Bali, and is still used in certain religious rituals, by employing and educating locals they hope this will be past tense.
Serangan Island is no longer an “island”, land has been reclaimed and now it’s just a bump on the coastline (ahhh, we remember the days when you could only go by boat...), and the area is somewhat developed, but local turtles still think its a good place to lay their eggs (mostly between July and October), the centre collects the eggs from the busy tourist beaches, and raises the hatchling until they are ready to start the big journey into the ocean alone, know in turtle conservation speak as “the lost years”.
The centre keeps the young turtles for one month to give them a little bit of an edge, and holds back any runts or sickly hatchlings until they are a bit stronger (whether they should be released as soon as they are hatched, is cause for debate in turtle conservation circles but TCEC follows advice from The Turtle Hospital, Florida USA), and this gives you (yes you, dear viewer) the opportunity to “adopt a turtle”.
Sorry you can’t take one home, but for 150,000 rupiah you can take part in their release into the sea.

Bali Driving - Denpasar to Sanur
Driving from Denpasar to Sanur on a typical Monday afternoon in February. For any first-time drivers, this will give you an idea of what it is like.
INDONESIA: Green School, dream school
A school in the middle of the jungle, designed to have the lowest carbon footprint possible. The Green School in Bali teaches a community of over 400 young learners to become green leaders. An inspiring example of education for the future of the Earth.
Green Bowl Beach, Bali
Green Bowl Beach is one of Bali’s most secluded beaches, a small 30m coastal strip with coarse white sand, located approximately 75 metres down hundreds of steps under a verdant cliff in the village of Ungasan (a 15-kilometre drive from Kuta, and under half an hour from Nusa Dua). The steep descent and climb required owes much to its appeal, attracting only adventurous weekenders and die-hard surfers favouring its uncrowded waves and exotic location. Also among the inimitable features at Green Bowl Beach are two large limestone caves that enclose small rock shrines, and which also provide shade and shelter for beach goers and surfers paddling in from their fun time out on the waves. The best time to go is during low tide, when the calm crystal clear waters allow for great snorkelling, with the fairly consistent waves a short paddle beyond a natural reef barrier.

Bali is one of the most evocative and popular tourist islands of the entire Indonesian archipelago. A visit here sparks the senses. As soon as you arrive, the intoxicating fragrance of incense and clove oil hangs in the thick tropical air. Peanuts sizzle at roadside stalls, petal-strewn offerings smolder on busy sidewalks, and traditional gamelan music jangles against the buzz of mopeds. Despite the clamor and chaos of the main tourist areas, the island is rich in natural beauty, with attractions for every kind of traveler. Surfers come for the legendary swells, hikers can trek up jungly volcanic peaks and to misty waterfalls, and cyclists can bike through lush landscapes bristling with rice terraces and traditional villages.
1 Pura Tanah Lot
About 20 kilometers northwest of Kuta, Pura Tanah Lot (Pura means temple in Balinese) is one of Bali's most iconic temples thanks to its spectacular seaside setting on a rocky islet surrounded by crashing waves. For the Balinese people, it is one of the most sacred of all the island's sea temples. (The largest and holiest Hindu temple in Bali is Pura Besakih, but recently local hagglers have been harassing visitors.) Every evening, throngs of tourists from Kuta, Legian, and Sanur find their way through a labyrinth of lanes lined by souvenir sellers to watch the sun setting behind the temple.
2 Mount Batur
Every day in Bali's predawn darkness, hundreds of visitors begin the trek up the 1,700-meter summit of Mount Batur to watch the sun rise above the lush mosaic of mist-shrouded mountains and the caldera far below. This sacred active volcano lies in Kintamani District in Bali's central highlands, about an hour's drive from Ubud, and the hike to the summit to watch the sunrise has long graced the list of top things to do in Bali.
3 Uluwatu Temple
Presiding over plunging sea cliffs above one of Bali's best surf spots, Uluwatu Temple (Pura Luhur Uluwatu) is one of the island's most famous temples, thanks to its magnificent clifftop setting. In Balinese, Ulu means tip or land's end and Watu means rock, a fitting name for the location of the temple on the Bukit Peninsula along the island's southwestern tip. Like Pura Tanah Lot, sunset is the best time to visit, when the sky and sea glow in the late afternoon light.
7 Waterbom Bali
Waterbom Bali is an action-packed waterpark, in the heart of Kuta, with something for every member of the family. Kids can splash in the swimming pools; drift down the Lazy River; or zoom down one of the many twisting water slides and rides, with names like the Python, Green Viper, and Super Bowl. Moms and dads can relax with a reflexology session, manicure or pedicure, or fish spa therapy. Restaurants and cafes cater to a range of different diets, and the grounds are landscaped with large, shady trees and beautiful tropical gardens, making this a refreshing respite from the heat on a hot tropical day.

8 Pura Ulun Danu Bratan
On a small island along the western shore of Lake Bratan, in the cool highlands of central Bali, the 17th-century Pura Ulun Danu Bratan is one of Bali's most picturesque temple complexes. Set against the imposing backdrop of Gunung Bratan, the thatched temples reflect on the lake, and when the water levels rise, they seem to float on its surface. Lake Bratan is one of Bali's main sources of irrigation and drinking water, and the temple complex is dedicated to Dewi Danu, goddess of the sea and lakes.

Bali, the Famed Island of Gods
Bali, the famed Island of the Gods, stakes a serious claim to be paradise on earth. Its varied landscape of hills and mountains, rugged coastlines and sandy beaches, lush rice terraces and barren volcanic hillsides provide a picturesque backdrop to its colourful, deeply spiritual and unique culture.
With world-class surfing and diving, many cultural, historical and archaeological attractions, and an enormous range of accommodations, this is one of the world's most popular island destinations. Award-winning Bali has something to offer almost every visitor from young back-packers to the super-rich.
Bali is one of more than 17,000 islands in the Indonesian archipelago and is located just over 2 kilometres from the eastern tip of the island of Java and west of the island of Lombok. The island, home to about 4 million people.
The word paradise is understandably used a lot in Bali. Friendly, hospitable people; a magnificently visual and spiritual culture; and spectacular beaches with great surfing and diving have made Bali the top tourist attraction in Indonesia. Eighty percent of international visitors to Indonesia go nowhere else but Bali.
The island is surrounded by coral reefs. Beaches in the south tend to have white sand while those in the north and west have black sand. The largest city is the provincial capital, Denpasar, near the southern coast. Its population is around 500,000. Bali's second-largest city is the old colonial capital, Singaraja, which is located on the north coast and is home to around 100,000 people. Other important cities include the beach resort, Kuta, which is practically part of Denpasar's urban area; and Ubud, which is north of Denpasar, and is known as the island's cultural centre.
Bali is renowned for its diverse and sophisticated art forms, such as painting, sculpture, woodcarving, handcrafts, and performing arts. Balinese percussion orchestra music, known as gamelan, is highly developed and varied.
