Haleakala National Park: Hiking Sliding Sands Trail - The Detourist Guide To Travel - Maui | Ep. 28
Enjoy our show? Support it →
On this episode of the show we take you back to Haleakala National Park and go for a hike into the crater. We spend the day hiking sliding sands trail which is known by many as one of the best hikes on Maui. If you want to find more of the best hikes on Maui's check out our Maui hiking playlist on our channel. Make sure to subscribe to continue following our Maui travel as we spend the next several months experiencing what it’s like to live, work and explore one of the most beautiful places in all of America.
The Detourist Guide To Travel is a long term travel show for the anti-tourist. We’re into experiencing what it’s really like to live, work and enjoy a destination like the locals do, not the people who visit. So, for the past several years we’ve left our home in the Northwest (Tacoma, WA) and lived somewhere new in the world from Vietnam all the way to Spain. What makes us different than the other 100 billion travel vloggers, digital nomads and backpackers on Youtube? We avoid the tourist track. No hostels or resorts. No tour guides or guide books. No souvenirs or travel clothes. We buy vehicles & groceries. We get apartments & jobs. We go slow & take our time, because if a place is worth going, it’s worth staying for a while.

Maui, Hawaii - Haleakala National Park (Hawaii Travel Vlog 6)
Part 6 of the Hawaii series of videos. This video covers day 7 of the adventure.
Watch Part 5:
On day 7 of our Hawaiian adventure we drove down to the Kipahulu District of the Haleakala National Park. They have quite a few great hikes to go on, especially the Pipiwai Trail, which brings you to the incredible Waimoku Falls. The hike is especially beautiful because it brings you through a Bamboo Forest and then through a rain forest!
After that long (but not too difficult) hike we did some of the nice easier hikes around the visitor center that bring you around the coastline and give you a chance to see a couple of smaller waterfalls.
After the hiking for a while we went back towards the Hana area and ate at Huli Huli Chicken, which had some of the best chicken I have ever had (not exaggerating)!
Finally we finished the day chilling at a couple of the beaches in the area (Hamoa Beach and Waianapanapa Black Sand Beach), which felt great after hiking!

Haleakala Crater - Full Day Volcano Hike GoPro Maui Hawaii
Maui - Hawaii 2014. Haleakala National Park. Full day hiking into the crater. We started at 9 am at Hosmer Grove parking lot. Hitchhiking to Haleakala Visitor Center and climbing to Pa Ka'oao overlook where journey began. It was freezing weather at the top. Expected 34 F. As we walked down temperature rise to lower 40 with sun worming the air. Ideal for hiking out there. It took us 8 hours and 15 min. to walk back to the car. Elevation changed few times and toughest and coolest part of this hike was a steep Halemau'u Trailhead with fast 1000 feet elevation change, narrow trail and really nice views of the crater. Approximately 15 miles hike and over 3000 feet elevation change. All recorded with GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition. Time-lapse made with 800 pictures.

Places to see in ( Maui - USA ) Haleakala National Park
Haleakalā National Park is on the Hawaiian island of Maui. It’s home to the dormant Haleakalā Volcano and endangered Hawaiian geese. The Leleiwi and Kalahaku overlooks on the steep Crater Road have views across the West Maui Mountains. Rugged trails in the Summit District pass cinder cones and lava flows. In the coastal area of Kīpahulu are the Pools of Ohe’o, freshwater pools and waterfalls set amid bamboo forest.
Haleakalā National Park is an American national park located on the island of Maui in the state of Hawaii. The park covers an area of 33,265 acres (134.62 km2), of which 19,270 acres (77.98 km2) is a wilderness area. It was originally created as part of the Hawaii National Park along with the volcanoes of Mauna Loa and Kilauea on the island of Hawaiʻi in 1916. Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park was made into a separate national park in 1961. The park area was designated an International Biosphere Reserve in 1980. The name Haleakalā is Hawaiian for house of the sun. According to a local legend, the demigod Maui imprisoned the sun here in order to lengthen the day.
The Hawaiian National Park Language Correction Act of 2000 was proposed to observe the Hawaiian spelling, but it did not become law. The park features the dormant Haleakalā (East Maui) Volcano, which last erupted sometime between 1480 and 1600 AD. The park is divided into two distinct sections: the summit area and the coastal Kipahulu area.

Sunrise at Haleakala National Park Maui | Hawaii Travel Vlog
Filmed on 5/14/18 in Maui, HI. We got up early to see the sun rise on Mt. Haleakala. Later that evening we went to the Old Lahaina Luau.

Want to watch the sunrise from the heavens of Maui? You’re invited to Haleakalā “House of the Sun.”
To be a good house guest means to wake up at 2:30am and slip on thermals even though it’s almost 90º at your sea level abode. A 3-4 hour journey will lead you to the summit that sits 10,023 feet above sea level — where the sun can be seen rising over the clouds in 40º temperatures.
You’ll bring your Haleakalā host gifts of content silence and the promise to leave delicate ecosystems untouched. You’ll be enthralled in the way you get when you’re positive this sunrise was meant for your gaze only, miraculously.
As kaleidoscope skies and dancing clouds put on an unforgettable show, a native Hawaiian singer welcomes the sun with powerful song:
E ala e Ka la i kahikina (Awaken, arise)
I ka moana (The sun in the east)
Ka moana hohonu (From the ocean)
Pi’i ka lewa (Climbing to heavean)
Ka lewa nu’u (The heaven highest)
I kahikina (In the east)
Aia ka la. (There is the sun)
E ala e (Awaken!)
Legend dictates that the demigod, Maui, used a clever trick to slow the sun and give his mother, goddess Hina, more sunlight for her drying tapa cloth. Maui climbed atop the grand mountain and quickly lassoed the sun to a halt. The begging sun made a deal with Maui: It’ll slow its journey across the sky to lengthen the day. Maui let the sun continue its assent and Hawaiians honored this agreement by calling the mountain Haleakala “House of the Sun.”

► Shaka Guide for Road to Hana:
Best Things to do in Maui
► The Road to Hana! The Road to Hana was our favorite single day in Maui, it was a day absolutely PACKED with adventure! Our two biggest tips for the Road to Hana are to get and early start, and to use the Shaka Guide. When you start early, you'll beat a lot of the traffic and have more of the sites to yourself. Using the Shaka Guide will make sure you don't miss any amazing sites and waterfalls!
► Snorkel with Sea Turtles! There are snorkeling opportunities all around Maui, and the best part is that there are Sea Turtles at most of the spots! Honolua Bay & Black Rock are two places you can drive to and snorkel for free, where we saw 4-5 sea turtles at EACH PLACE! Molokini Crater is the most beautiful place to snorkel on Maui, however you can only get here by boat on an excursion.
► Haleakala at Sunrise! Haleakala at sunrise is one of the most stunning views you can imagine. You are above the clouds and get to see the sun rise over that horizon of clouds! It is an inverted sunrise people... You need a permit for this, which costs $1, but you have to get it at 7am 2 days before you are planning on going. Don't be late because they sell out fast!
► Pride of Maui Excursions. We took the Pride of Maui to Molokini Crater for snorkeling and for their dinner cruise! We had a blast on each trip, and highly recommend these tours. The guides were awesome, the food was great, and we got to experience a side of Maui that we wouldn't have been able to experience otherwise!
► Nakalele Blowhole. This is what it sounds like. There is a hole in the rocky coast North of Lahaina where water periodically shoots out of like a giant blowhole! It is super cool, and pretty incredible how high the water sprays!
► Farmer's Markets! You have to love fresh fruits and vegetables, and Maui has some of the best tropical fruits in the world. Head to a farmer's market (there are many on the island, we went to the one in Lahaina) and sample the local fruits and veggies, and bring some home to enjoy on your trip!
Where to Stay in Kauai
We recommend getting an Airbnb or hotel in the Lahaina area of Maui. We loved that area and felt like we were right in the middle of everything we wanted to see and do in Maui!
If you have any questions, we would love to hear from you in the Comments or on our About Us page. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hi, we are Julie & Zach, a couple who sold everything in 2018 and took off an adventure around the world! So far, this journey has taken us in a van ALL ACROSS the United States and Canada, from snorkeling with manatees in Florida to camping in the Grand Canyon to climbing glaciers in Canada, and everything in between! We were both working and going to school while living in Chicago in 2017 and 2018, and to be honest it really wore on us. We were exhausted, unfulfilled, and ready for an adventure. So, we made it happen! We saved up AS MUCH as we could over those 2 years - all homemade meals, no shopping, walk or bike everywhere, etc - and sold almost all of our belongings! With that money, we bought a renovated a van that we have been living in ever since! We started our YouTube channel a few weeks ago and have been loving creating videos! When we started, we were SO SO SO SO bad at it, and to be honest we still kinda suck, but we want to get better! What videos do you want to see? Let us know and we will make it happen!
We believe that travel is truly a life-changing experience, it certainly changed ours! When you get out of your everyday world and experience new cultures, foods, places, people, sights, sounds, and take an adventure, you grow as a person and you become a better version of yourself! You are WAY stronger than you know, and stronger than you give yourself credit for. You have the ability to do anything, so make it happen! BE FOREVER FREE!

Maui's 'top of the world' sunrise view leads to overcrowding
(2 Feb 2017) LEADIN :
Throngs of tourists from around the world travel to Maui's tallest peak in Hawaii to watch the sun rise each morning.
The National Park Service says too many visitors are driving to the summit of Haleakala (hah-lay-ah-kah-LAH') volcano, creating a safety hazard, and crowds are trampling sensitive habitat.
Now the Park Service this week started requiring reservations and limiting the number of cars. This will potentially cut in half the number of early-morning visitors
STORYLINE:
Before dawn each morning, throngs of tourists from around the world drive to the top of Maui's tallest peak, a dormant volcano, to see what Mark Twain called the sublimest spectacle he ever witnessed.
Polly Angelakis, Chief of Interpretation & Education at Haleakala National Park says that the sunrise is key to Native Hawaiian culture.
Haleakala is considered sacred to Native Hawaiians, and countless generations of Native Hawaiians come up here to experience the sacred landscape, and one of the things they experience is sunrise.
Tourists drive up a long, winding road through the clouds to a lava-rock landscape at 10,000 feet. Then they bundle up and take their place for a stunning daybreak show.
Over the past year, that experience has been attracting over a thousand people each morning to the summit in Haleakala National Park.
Officials say it's just become too crowded, with cars spilling out of limited parking lots and onto the road, creating safety hazards while tourists trample sensitive habitat.
To address the problem, the National Park Service as of Feb. 1 started requiring reservations and limiting to 150 the number of vehicles allowed up each morning for sunrise.
Under the new system, only those driving to the summit between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m. need reservations, which cost $1.50 per car plus the $20 entrance fee for the park. The proceeds will pay for the expense of administering the reservation program.
People on guided tours won't be affected as tour companies fall under different regulations.
Reservations can be made up to two months in advance.
David Grant, a tourist from Canada says it was worth the effort and the fee.
We're at just about 10,000 feet and above the clouds, and the sun comes up, and you don't really get to see that kind of view from anywhere else.
It's breathtaking, seeing the sun and the stars and everything coming up, says Paige Diamond Kraft, from West Hartford, Connecticut, as the sky turned from white to yellow to orange.
Others are not so sure.
Johann Wens, a tourist from Munich, Germany was disappointed by the experience.
OK, everyone has the right to see the sunset, but it was kind of just to find a parking space and it's a lot of money to see just a sunrise. If you're not a hiker and you just want to see the sunrise, it's still twenty dollars.
Most people seem to like the idea of limiting the crowds, making the spectacular show more serene.
I think it's a good idea to limit the number of people up here just so you can actually catch the view and it keeps it a little more peaceful and a little bit more natural, says Julia Grant, who was visiting recently with her husband from British Columbia.
Nettie Kuwamura, a Native Hawaiian who was born and raised on Maui, considers herself a protector of the summit. She reminds tourists to stay off the lava rocks and away from fragile areas.
For the past two years, Kuwamura has been driving tourists to the summit, where she recites a Hawaiian chant to welcome the rising sun each morning.

Arrived at the early dawn of Halla Kala National Park. You do not normally need to make reservations, but reservations are required to get there early. It is because of the special sunrise here. People who filled the park are waiting for the sun in Maui. I hope that you will breathe now and be a better man than yesterday. This is all we can do. I do not compare, do not judge without competing. So why do not you take this moment as a new starting point for your life? Thank you all very much. Aloha. Now, let's start right away. The sun of Halle Carla woke up through the darkness. And the sea that shines the light. It was a sunrise on Maui Island that will never be forgotten.
