Top 10 church buildings in China: East Church, Beijing: Beijing East Church Located at Wangfujing Street in the center of Beijing, the East Church, also known as St Joseph’s Church. It was built in the Romanesque Revival style from the early 20th century. Two priests completed the original construction in 1665.
St. Sophia Church, Harbin: The St. Sophia Church in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, is the largest Eastern Orthodox Church in the Far East region. The building was first built by Russians for military use in March of 1907 in typical Byzantine style, and was later renovated into a wooden church.
Xikai Catholic Church, Tianjin: Xikai Catholic Church Built in the Roman style, the Xikai Catholic Church is located in the Heping District of Tianjin. It is a characteristic French Romanesque building and also called the “French Church” because it was first built by French bishops in 1913 with bricks imported from France.
Xujiahui Catholic Church, Shanghai: Xujiahui Catholic Church is the largest Catholic Church in Shanghai. With red walls, white stone columns and slate roofs, as well as the two cloud-kissing bell towers, it has become an important building in Shanghai. Because the church can hold 3,000 people, it has also been named the “Vatican in Shanghai”. Shigulu Catholic Church, Nanjing: Shigulu Catholic Church Shigulu Catholic Church is currently the only Romanesque-style building in Nanjing. It was first built in 1870 by French priests and has been the office of the Catholicism Patriotic Committee of Nanjing and Jiangsu Provinces since 1978. St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Qingdao: St. Michael’s Catholic Church sits atop a steep hill in Qingdao’s old urban area. Its bell tower is 55 meters high and it has been the city’s important landmark for a long time. The gorgeous church has been a popular place for young Catholic couples to hold weddings. Nanguan Catholic Church, Shenyang: Nanguan Catholic Church Erected in 1878, this gray hulk of a building barely survived the Boxer Rebellion in 1900. The existing Catholic Church was just the one rebuilt in 1912. Following Renaissance architectural style, it is a characteristically gothic building. With a height of 40 meters and an area of 1,100 square meters, the church can hold 1,500 people.
Sacred Heart Cathedral, Guangzhou: Sacred Heart Cathedral Located in central Guangzhou, Sacred Heart Cathedral is locally called “Stone House”, as all of the walls and columns are made of granite. The church is built in the European gothic style and its tower spire reaches 58.5 meters. The atmosphere can be compared to Notre Dame in Paris.
Cizhong Church, Yunnan: The Cizhong Church was built at the beginning of the 20th century with a unique fusion of French and Chinese architectural styles. The overhanging eaves and roof of the church are Chinese style, while the cross on top is Western style. The Cizhong municipal government repaired the church in 1989 and opened it to the public.
Yanjing Catholic Church: The Yanjing Catholic Church, built in 1865 by French missionaries, is the only one of its kind in Tibet and covers an area of 6,000 sq m. The church is a rare combination of Western and Tibetan architectural styles. Inside it has a typical Gothic vault and frescoes depicting Biblical scenes on the ceiling.

Shanghai Orthodox Churches (St Nicholas Church & Cathedral of the Holy Mother of God)
St Nicholas Church was a Russian Orthodox Church in the former French Concession of Shanghai at 16 rue Corneille, now known as Gāolán Lù. Formerly the building was home to a French restaurant on the ground floor called Ashanti and a Spanish one in the basement called La Boca. As of August 2016, the building has fallen into disrepair, and is partly occupied by a coffee bar named Kinloch Coffee. It has been a protected monument since 1994.
The building was built in 1932 on the initiative of White Russians in Shanghai, refugees of the revolution of 1917, especially General Glebov. It was consecrated in 1937 in honour of St Nicholas, patron saint of the former Russian Emperor, Nicholas II. The church was closed in 1949 when Europeans left following the Chinese Civil War.
It was first converted into a warehouse and then used as a washing machine factory and later hosted a French restaurant, Ashanti Dome, on the upper floor, and a Spanish tapas bar on the ground floor called Boca. During the Cultural Revolution which sought to destroy the ‘four olds’ (old customs, old habits, old culture and old thinking), public worship was prohibited but quick-thinking believers of various religions posted images of Mao over their places of worship to prevent overzealous Red Guards from bursting in to destroy the buildings. The St Nicholas Church was one of such buildings — and the image of Mao kept watch over the building until it was taken down in the early 2000s.
During the Expo 2010, its loft was reconsecrated to allow Russian Orthodox services to be held there.
Overlooking Xiangyang Park, at the corner of Xiangyang Rd North and Xinle Rd, is the former Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Mother of God. Built in 1931 and inspired by the Cathedral of the Saviour in Moscow, this beautiful church used to be able to hold up to as many as 2,500 worshippers.
This part of the former French Concession was popular with Shanghai’s Russian refugees, more than 5,000 of whom turned out for the Cathedral’s opening service, fully half of them had to stay outside for the duration. Before World War II, the Cathedral has two bishops, two archimandrites, three arch-priests, six priests and priest-monks, as well as two proto-deacons, a church warden and a secretary. Designed by a Russian émigré, the six original paintings of cherubim and seraphim were rumoured to have resembled the local artist’s various lovers. Sadly, these have long since disappeared, having been painted over while being renovated. The Cathedral served as a machine shop during the Cultural Revolution

Catholic Church in Shanghai China
This video was shot after the 12 o'clock Mass at Saint Ignatius Cathedral in Xujiawia, Shanghai. This is the only English Mass, there are maybe 10 Masses a week in total. The Mass was about the same as a Mass in the States except almost every seat was taken. I would guess that about 30% of those in attendance were not Chinese. The Cathedral was build by French Jesuits in 1910.
RUSSIAN church service - wow - energy!
I was invited by my Russian friends in Moscow to a Monastry and Church/Temple....and we were lucky to be there at the Sunday service. They had never been here, but a guest at their airbnb.com told them it was in the 1000 most amazing places to visit type book (world places not just Russia) so we all headed off, and WOW - beautiful intricate and ornate paintings and gold encased items, and wow the angelic voices of the service was beautiful. I was encouraged to wear a scarf (they all do this).... to respect. It was a beautiful experience of co-creation with creator and man...

Pelosi leads delegation to China
(12 Nov 2015) U.S. House of Representatives Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has met with senior Chinese officials during a trip to Beijing.
Pelosi also led a delegation on a rare trip to cut-off Tibet during a visit to China that included meetings with officials in Beijing.
Pelosi has been a frequent critic of China's human rights record, including in the remote Himalayan region where Beijing is accused of suppressing demands for greater religious and cultural freedoms.
Pelosi was asked about her Tibet trip during a meeting on Thursday with Zhang Ping, a vice chairman of the Chinese parliament, but her response was inaudible to journalists in the room.
The Tibet visit was not announced in advance.
The China visit by Pelosi and six other Democrats was intended to focus on boosting trade ties, along with talks on national and cyber security, climate change and human rights.
