Train Cars Derail into Potomac River Near Harpers Ferry
A freight train crossing the Potomac River near Harpers Ferry derailed early Saturday morning and two cars plummeted into the water.
The train was headed east over Winchester and Potomac Railroad Bridge between Sandy Hook Road in Maryland and Harpers Ferry, West Virginia about 2:30 a.m., CSX says.
The locomotive did not fall off the tracks, but five empty cars derailed, CSX says. No injuries were reported.
Parts of the bridge are crumbled. Officials said the bridge collapsed.
The train tipped over a footbridge that's popular with Harpers Ferry visitors and locals. Chopper4 video shows damage to that footbridge.
Maryland State Police, Washington County fire, Loudoun County fire, the National Park Service and other agencies responded about 3:30 a.m.
CSX says there were no hazardous materials on board and the company will work to clean up and restore the area quickly. The cause of the derailment is under investigation.
The train was going between Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, and Brunswick, Maryland.
The tracks are dedicated to CSX freight rail service and run next to a popular pedestrian footbridge that connects to the Appalachian Trail. The derailment is visible from the town of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.
Amtrak service in the area is not expected to be affected.

Adventure Park Obstacle Course, Harpers Ferry West Virginia
Run by Rivers Rafters, we bought a season pass for the adventure park (tree top obstacle course) and river tubing. On this day we only did two of the six? courses. We had a terrific time. They teach you how to work the safety lines. It is up to you to connect them properly throughout the day. If nothing else, the beginner course is the safe place to practice connecting them properly.
