The ruins of the famous sanctuary of Hera are found near one of the oldest stone-built lighthouses still operating, the Cape of Heraion (also known as Melagavi), to the north-west of Loutraki and beyond the green village of Perachora.
The Heraion of Perachora consists of two sections, and for this reason, until quite recently, it was believed that they were two sanctuaries: one dedicated to Acraea Hera (i.e., on the edge of the land) and the other one dedicated to Limenia Hera (i.e., of the port). Recent excavations, however, have led the archaeologists to the conclusion that there was only one sanctuary dedicated to Acraea - Limenia Hera.

This lighthouse was manufactured in 1897. The altitude of tower is 13 metres and the height of focal plane is 58 metres. The lighthouse located at the end of cape Melagavi or Ireon an the access in the lighthouse becomes roadly from Lutraki.
The Heraion of Perachora (Greek: Ηραίο Περαχώρας) was a sanctuary of the goddess Hera situated in a small cove of the Corinthian gulf at the end of the Perachora peninsula. In addition to a temple of Hera of unusual construction and antiquity, the remains of a number of other structures have also been found, including a L-shaped stoa, a large cistern, dining rooms, and a second potential temple. The Sanctuary of Hera at Perachora is 14.2 kilometres (8.8 mi) north-northwest of Corinth and 75.9 kilometres (47.2 mi) west of Athens. Although there is debate between Argos, Megara and Corinth, the sanctuary was probably under the control of Corinth, as it faced the harbors of that powerful city across the Corinthian gulf. Cult activity at the site continued from perhaps the 9th century BCE to 146 BCE, when the Roman general Mummius sacked Corinth during the war with the Achaean League. In the Roman period, domestic structures were built on the site, indicating that the area was no longer a sanctuary. This site is significant for the study of the origins of Greek temple architecture and rural cults.

Among the most important archaeological sites located in Corinth, is the Heraion Perachora in the edge of the Corinthian Gulf.
In this area, some of the most important archaeological evidence were found linking this place with early Corinthian civilization. From the archaeological excavation that were carried out during the years 1930 -- 1933, the area of Heraion Perachora were under thorough archaeological search. During those excavations, the two sanctuaries namely Hera Limanaia and Hera Akraia were thoroughly researched. The archaeological survey expanded its excavations to the near-by Vouliagmeni Lake where residues from early Neolithic, Helladic and Mycenaic era were found.
In the archaeological area which covers a wide area of the natural harbour located in the Corinthian Cape, excavations through light to many architectural and religious buildings. Those buildings included the two sanctuaries as well as a sacred pool. It was common in ancient Greece, when sailors where about to take a long journey threw coins in a sacred place asking for the Goddess to bless their journey with good luck. Among other excavational reseraches, a preserved dining room and water channels can be seen. Following the path to the harbour, a double apsidal cistern can be seen, an L-shaped stoa, an altar, and what is believed as a west wing of the temple enclosing ruins of roman house in it.
The Heraion Perachora is considered to be among the most important places of the religious cult of Hera in the area and it was oftenly claimed by the near-by cities of Corinth and Megara which were very strong cities at the time. But, from the archaeological excavations, it is supported that the Sanctuary of Heraion was controlled by the city of Corinth which was on the other side of the Corinthian Gulf.

At a short distance from Loutraki, which is renowned for its healing and natural mineral waters as well as for its casino (first one in Greece), you will encounter the cape of Heraion of Perachora also known as Melagkavi. The cape stands alongside of the largest lighthouse of the Corinthian Bay. Important relics of the early Corinthian Civilization have been discovered in the area. The sanctuary of goddess Hera, located at the depth of the harbour, near the rocks on which the current lighthouse is built, was of great importance in its time.
The archaeological site of Heraion
Visit the archaeological site of Heraion and see up close; the Temple of Hera located in the harbour beneath the Melagkavi lighthouse, relics dating back to antiquity such as an L-shaped stoa (freestanding colonnade or covered walkway), a large cistern, dining halls as well as a second smaller temple. The relics found in the area demonstrate its importance during the pre Roman Age.
Heraion Lake, known also as Vouliagemi lagoon, 3.5 kms from Ancient Heraion, the lake is a picturesque area surrounded by many cafes and tavernas, with local fishermen still going about their daily business, as they have for thousands of years. During the ancient period the lake was called Lake Eschatiotis.
Malagavi Lighthouse is situated above ancient Heraion, on the Western tip of Cape Melagavi in the Gulf of Corinth. One of the oldest stone lighthouses in Greece, built in 1897, that is still in operation. You can get to the lighthouse from the Heraion car-park by walking up a small pathway to the right of the concrete ramp that leads down to the sanctuary of Heraion. There are some spectacular views from the lighthouse, of the Corinthian Gulf, the rugged coastline and unusual rock formations in the sea nearby.
Ancient Heraion was a sanctuary to the goddess Hera and was in use from the Greek Dark Ages in the 8th Century BC until the late Hellenistic period. The sanctuary belonged to the powerful ancient city of Corinth (Korinthos) for most of its time, and fell into disuse after the Romans sacked Corinth in 146 BC. The sanctuary was built on two levels, with temples to Hera on each level. The upper level temple was dedicated to Hera Limenaia and the lower temple, by the beach, was dedicated to Hera Akraia. The sanctuary slowly developed over the years to become one of the richest rural sanctuary's in the whole of Greece, and its location in a small cove with a sandy beach must have made the sanctuary complex look 'heavenly' to its ancient visitors. According to legend and Euripides, Medea, who was married to Jason (of the Argonaughts fame) murdered and buried their two children at Heraion, whilst fleeing from Corinth.
Todays visitors to Ancient Heraion also get the chance to have a wonderful refreshing swim from the sanctuary beach, or a chance to do some 'cliff-jumping' from the surrounding rocks for the more adventurous, as the sea in the sanctuary cove is both deep and clear.
Built next to the picturesque bay and harbour you’ll encounter the Temple of Hera (first level of the site), making it ideal for a simultaneous refreshing dive in the sea found next to the site. The temple replaced an earlier small apsidal temple dating back to the Geometric period (late 9th century BC - early 8th century BC). The altar was a long rectangular structure, which was originally decorated with triglyphs and metopes on all four sides, while the remains of at least seven steps were part of a staircase. A two-storey stoa built in an L-shape, dating from the 4th century B.C., extends to the east of the Altar. The West Courtyard, an irregular pentagon which was identified originally with the agora, can be seen to the southwest of the temple. The neighbouring dock dating back to the 19th century served the needs of the lighthouse.

Η Λίμνη Βουλιαγμένη είναι λιμνοθάλασσα που βρίσκεται 16 χιλιόμετρα βορειοδυτικά του Λουτρακίου, πολύ κοντά στην περιοχή του αρχαιολογικού χώρου του Ηραίου και στον οικισμό Περαχώρα. Έχει μέγιστο μήκος 2 χλμ. και μέγιστο πλάτος περίπου 1 χλμ. Το βάθος της δεν υπερβαίνει τα 40 μέτρα. Διαθέτει παραλία με άμμο εν αντιθέση με την παραλία του Λουτρακίου. Επικοινωνεί με τα νερά του Κορινθιακού κόλπου από ένα πολύ στενό κανάλι που το πλάτος του δεν υπερβαίνει τα 6 μέτρα. Πρόκειται για περιοχή παρθένας φύσης και ιδιαίτερου κάλλους, καθώς λόγω των αρχαιολογικών ευρημάτων του Ηραίου και άλλων διατηρήθηκε αναλλοίωτη η τοπική γεωμορφολογία, χλωρίδα και πανίδα.

Heraion of Perachora is located on the peninsula of Perachora, north of the Corinthian Gulf, at the western end of the Gerania Mountains.
The place was called Heraion from antiquity because of the sanctuary dedicated to Hera at the cape. The modern name of the Perachora area derives from the ancient place name Piraeus or Peraia.
