Orange County Agricultural and Nikkei Heritage Museum
Walking through the Fullerton Arboretum, I came upon a small museum in the arboretum’s visitor center. Most Fullerton residents are probably unaware that the Orange County Agricultural and Nikkei Heritage Museum even exists, but it’s been open for ten years and is free to the public. Currently, there are two exhibitions: “Two Roads, One Journey” shows what a school day is like for two students, one from China and one from the United States, while the “Only Owls” exhibition showcases owl-themed artwork.

Travel Suitcase Project from the Heritage Museum of Orange County
We are honored to announce that Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton will be hosting an event for the Vietnamese community to commemorate 40 years since the Fall of Saigon in 1975. This event on April 25, 2015 at the historic refugee site in Camp Pendleton will serve as a grand reunion for our community, show gratitude to our national heroes and remind our youth of their heritage. On behalf of the Heritage Museum of Orange County, we cordially invite your troop to join us in an educational and fun project to preserve Orange County’s history.
With the theme Journey to Freedom & Beyond, we hope that the youth can make a traveling suitcase out of shoeboxes and construction paper. The major goal of the Travel Suitcase is to connect the present with a past experience or event by encouraging today's youth to speak and interview members of an older generation. We feel this project is especially important to teach the youth about a shared common experience that has deeply impacted and shaped people's lives.
The travel suitcase will be able to represent what these individuals brought with them and its importance. A picture of the person would be ideal for the inside of the suitcase and a short description of the person and their story about migrating to the United States. Shoeboxes can be provided to your troop at your request and we can also have a volunteer demonstrate the project. Travel Suitcases will have the opportunity to be displayed at the historic MCB Camp Pendleton on April 25, 2015 by the Heritage Museum of Orange County and will be returned to the creator after the event.
We sincerely hope that you and your troop will be able to join us in this meaningful, educational project to preserve and appreciate history.
