Big Tree Country
A stunning video featuring footage shot from a helicopter as it flies over beautiful scenery in the heart of Scotland. The area, known as Perthshire Big Tree Country - is divided into six distinct clusters: Aberfeldy & Kenmore; Blair Atholl; Crieff & Strathearn; Dunkeld & Birnam; Perth & Blairgowrie; Pitlochry & the Road to the Isles.
Perthshire Big Tree Country is famous for its heritage trees, several of which are featured in the video. Watch out for the Fortingall Yew, oldest living organism in Europe; the Birnam Oak, made famous in Shakespeares MacBeth; the record-breaking Meikleour Beech Hedge, tallest in the world; and Niel Gows Oak, named after the well-known fiddler.
Narrated by one of Scotlands most famous plant collectors, David Douglas, the video begins in the grounds of Scone Palace where Douglas served his apprenticeship as a gardener. Born in Scone, Douglas is responsible for introducing many plant and tree species including the Douglas fir, Sitka spruce Scotlands most prolific forestry tree and sunflowers.
As it swoops over Kinnoull Hill Woodland Park (Scotlands first) and its iconic tower, the video provides a birds eye view of other historical buildings such as Scone Palace, the former crowning place of Scottish kings; Blair Castle; and the Hermitage. It also passes over the most famous view in Scotland, Queens View. Allegedly a favourite of Queen Victoria, the view is actually named after the wife of Robert the Bruce.
In addition to the famous names already mentioned, Perthshire Big Tree Country played host to Robert Rabbie Burns on his tour of the Highlands. The Birks of Aberfeldy takes its name from a song penned by Scotlands national bard. Rabbie is also believed to be responsible encouraging the then Duke of Atholl for the planting of the area around the Falls of Bruar following a petition to the duke in one of his poems.
But it isnt all about the trees. The River Tay runs through Big Tree Country, providing fantastic salmon fishing opportunities and a playground for the more adventurous white water rafters or canoeists. Equally the forests offer great mountain and trail biking runs and tracks suitable for all levels of walking criss cross many of the woodland sites and hills.
Finally, a host of wildlife calls Perthshire Big Tree Country home. Peregrine falcons, buzzards, kestrels and ospreys soar through the sky. During the autumn the roar of red deer stags can be heard during rutting season and roe deer are often spotted dashing through the woods. Red squirrels are shyer residents but are easy to see in Cluny House Gardens and occasionally rarer species such as black grouse and capercaillie are spotted.
The video was produced by Speakeasy - for Perth & Kinross Countryside Trust

Isle of Man 100 Mile Thru-Hike: Raad Ny Foillan
I went on a 7 day trek around the Isle of Man Coast, known as the Raad Ny Foillan or the road of the gull. The Isle is located between Ireland and England in the Irish Sea. As I walked there were times when I didn’t see another human for 2 days. Along with this isolation came other struggles, such as lack of food and clean water sources. So with my minimal survival skills, obviously it was one of the best things I have ever done. Watch and enjoy this video I recently put together as it not only depicts my day to day adventures, but the scenery I encountered as well.

Hurricane, Bf 109, Spitfire - Battle of Britain Day
Battle of Britain Day, put on by Flying Heritage Collection, featured their Hawker Hurricane Mk. XIIa, Messerschmitt Bf 109E-3, and Supermarine Spitfire Mk. Vc and as a bonus, their North American B-25J Mitchell and P-51D Mustang made a couple of passes before flying over to Boeing Field to take part in their 100 year anniversary event.
This was a challenging one to shoot! The winds were favoring runway 16 this time, which meant no takeoff or landing shots. :-/ Also, with the airplanes in such a close trail, I had a tough time knowing who to follow and when. Since this is my only opportunity to see the 109 fly, I tended to stick with that primarily.
Those are my excuses! Next event is July 23rd and will feature a wide range of vintage civilian (and some military trainers) aircraft! And after that will be a great show featuring tons of WWII Pacific fighters! Two Hellcats, two Zero's, Oscar (replica), Wildcat, Dauntless, B-25, etc.

Old Photographs Falkirk Central Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Falkirk, a large town in the Central Lowlands. Historically within the county of Stirlingshire. It lies in the Forth Valley north west of Edinburgh and north east of Glasgow. The town is at the junction of the Forth and Clyde and Union Canals, a location which proved key to its growth as a centre of heavy industry during the Industrial Revolution. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Falkirk was at the centre of the iron and steel industry. The area was at the forefront of canal construction when the Forth and Clyde Canal opened in 1790. The Union Canal built in 1822 provided a link to Edinburgh and early railway development followed in the 1830s and 1840s. The Antonine Roman Wall, which stretches across the centre of Scotland, passed through the town and remnants of it can still be seen. George Forrest who was born in Falkirk on 13 March 1873, was a Scottish botanist, who became one of the first explorers of China's then remote southwestern province of Yunnan, generally regarded as the most biodiverse province in the country. Robert Dollar, also known as Captain Robert Dollar, who was born in 1844 in Bainsford, Falkirk. was a Scots American industrialist. The title Captain was honorary and he was called the Grand Old Man of the Pacific. Both were bestowed after his entry into the shipping industry. Dollar became a lumber baron, shipping magnate, philanthropist; he was also a Freemason. His biography and an extensive introduction by him is contained within the book, Men Who Are Making the West 1923. Thomas Clement Douglas was born in Falkirk on 20 October 1904. He was a Canadian social democratic politician and Baptist minister. He was elected to the Canadian House of Commons in 1935 as a member of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation. He left federal politics to become the Saskatchewan CCF's leader and then the seventh Premier of Saskatchewan from 1944 to 1961. His government was the first social democratic government in North America, and it introduced the continent's first single payer, universal health care program. Robert D. Wilson was born in Falkirk on February 3, 1839. He was an American farmer and politician. Wilson emigrated to the United States in 1854 and settled in the Town of Melrose, Jackson County, Wisconsin. Wilson was a farmer who served in the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1880 and was a Republican. Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day

Old Connecticut Path Heritage Trail: Program for CT Chapter Appalachian Mountain Club (CT-AMC)
Program for the annual meeting of the Connecticut Chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club (CT-AMC) on November 8, 2014. Presentation by Jason Newton connects the story of the Path with the people who came to Connecticut and the places to walk the Path today.
Reverend Thomas Hooker and his congregation set out on a journey from Newtown (Cambridge), MA to Newtown (Hartford), CT in May 1636 along what came to be known as the Old Connecticut Path. This group was among those who followed the trail west through the unsettled wilderness to build new lives in Connecticut at Windsor, Hartford and Wethersfield.
The families who came to Connecticut along the Path started America’s westward migration. In 1638, they started another journey that continues to this day. They joined together to adopt a new covenant embodied in the Fundamental Orders. The revolution of America’s “government of the people, by the people, for the people” began 375 years ago in Connecticut.
The Old Connecticut Path Heritage Trail connects two states (Massachusetts & Connecticut) and 24 towns with the heritage of the pioneers who followed the trail as part of America's earliest westward migration and the story of the native Indian people who lived along the Path for thousands of years.
The Path travels through places of great natural beauty and historic significance in their own right. A guide to places to visit and walk along the Path is shared open the way for others to directly experience the splendor of the land that endures almost four centuries after the first pioneers traveled down the Path to Connecticut.
Thanks to Connecticut Chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club for sponsoring the Old Connecticut Path Heritage Trail presentation.
