Overthrowing a Kingdom | Hawaii
Hawaii went from a kingdom, to a republic, to a state in under 200 years. Unlike previous conquests, the series of events that lead to annexation is far more confusing than you might imagine.

The Untold Truth Of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson
The truth about Dwayne Johnson! These are the Dwayne Johnson facts you didn’t know and The Rock facts that you’ve never heard before!
13. Football
Before he became a professional wrestler, Dwayne Johnson was a football player. We already mentioned that he played in high school, but his football career went further than that. He received a full scholarship and played defensive tackle for the University of Miami. He played on the Miami Hurricanes’ national championship team in 1991. However, he suffered an injury that left him unable to play for some time; he was replaced by Warren Sapp, who eventually made the NFL Hall of Fame. After taking time to recover, Johnson joined the Canadian Football League’s Calgary Stampeders in 1995; however, they cut him after just a couple of months. Dwayne has spoken about how terrible his senior year of college was due to his injury and replacement on the Miami Hurricanes. He also said the cut from the Calgary Stampeders had a significant effect on him, leaving him depressed and at an all-time low. But, he said that his failures ultimately helped him; and since he became a successful wrestler and actor, we can all agree that he was right.
12. Citizenship
Although Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is perhaps most widely known in the United States, he has citizenship in other countries as well. His mother, Ata Johnson, is Samoan, and although she is an American citizen, Dwayne was notedly able to get Samoan citizenship through her and her immediate family. Johnson’s father, Wayde, is Canadian; so, he received Canadian citizenship in 2009, making him a citizen of three different countries. You could say Dwayne Johnson is a worldly man.
11. Actor
Dwayne Johnson is best known nowadays for his acting career; he started acting while he was still wrestling. In 1999, he made his debut in the field by playing in an episode of That ‘70s Show, in which he played his father. About a year after that, he took a role as an alien wrestler in an episode of Star Trek: Voyager. His first theatrical role was in the film The Mummy Returns in 2001. He went on to play in other action films, including The Scorpion King, The Rundown, and Walking Tall. Other movies he’s done include a few of the Fast & Furious series, Hercules, San Andreas, and Central Intelligence. Dwayne Johnson also plays Spencer Strasmore in the television series Ballers. Some of his most popular movies are Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Moana. Johnson has become such an immensely sought-after actor that he is notedly one of the highest-paid in the field. He made $124 million in 2017, which made him the most financially successful actor from 2017 to 2018.
Aloha
In ALOHA, a celebrated military contractor (Bradley Cooper) returns to the site of his greatest career triumphs – the US Space program in Honolulu, Hawaii – and reconnects with a long-ago love (Rachel McAdams) while unexpectedly falling for the hard-charging Air Force watchdog (Emma Stone) assigned to him. From Academy Award®-winner Cameron Crowe, the writer-director behind such films as Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous, ALOHA also stars Bill Murray, John Krasinski, Danny McBride, and Alec Baldwin.

TOP 10 DESTINATIONS — UNITED STATES
Top 10 Destinations — United States
Key West, Florida
Does time ever pass in the Florida Keys? Everyone and everything in Key West seems to go at its own pace, right down to the ice melting slooooowly in your margarita glass. Of course, it’s not all limes and leisure – Key West is known as the “Winter White House” because of its appeal to visiting U.S. presidents, and the island has been home to literary greats like Ernest Hemingway and Tennessee Williams.
San Francisco, California
Every neighborhood in San Francisco has its own personality, from the hippie chic of the Upper Haight to the hipster grit of the Mission. The Marina district boasts trendy bistros and postcard-perfect views of the Golden Gate Bridge, while Noe Valley offers quaint and quiet boutiques. Wave hello to the sea lions at Pier 39, and sample local cheese and charcuterie at the Ferry Building. Sit in on a yoga session in Dolores Park or marvel at the Dutch Windmill across from Ocean Beach.
San Diego, California
San Diego embodies laid-back California culture, complete with a Boardwalk, surfing communities, and outstanding Mexican food. Breathe in the fresh ocean air at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, then gobble down a fresh fish taco at a La Jolla seafood joint. The naval aircrafts at the USS Midway Museum will have you standing at attention. A free Sunday concert at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion is the perfect way to unwind after a Saturday night bar-hop in the thumping Gaslamp Quarter.
Chicago, Illinois
The windy city is a cornucopia of modern art, fine dining, cutting edge comedy, and die-hard sports fans. Snap a photo of your reflection in the silver Cloud Gate sculpture at Millennium Park before heading to Grant Park to get hit with the refreshing spray of Buckingham Fountain. There are dozens of museums and theater companies in Chicago, so a cultural experience is never hard to find.
Orlando, Florida
From the Magic Kingdom to magical spa treatments, Orlando sparkles with the promise of adventure. Spend a day exploring the world-famous Disney theme parks, giggling with the dolphins at SeaWorld, or screaming your head off on a Universal Studios roller coaster. For a less adrenaline-pumping afternoon, enjoy the quiet natural beauty of the Harry P. Leu Gardens, or enjoy a seaweed scrub at a luxury day spa. Savor fresh and local ingredients at one of Orlando’s James Beard-nominated restaurants.
Las Vegas, Nevada
Whether you’re a high roller or a low-key lounger, Las Vegas has something to suit your vacation taste. Sample fare from top chefs and cornucopian buffets, try your luck at one of the world’s premier casinos, or take in a spectacular show. Just wandering the Strip is enough to get your heart pumping. Once you’ve had enough of the razzle-dazzle, wave hello to the toothy sea life at the Mandalay Bay Shark Reef, hike Red Rock Canyon, or visit the Neon Museum, where old signs take on new life.
Oahu, Hawaii
The Hawaiian island of Oahu is a surfer’s paradise, with swelling waves that can reach epic heights. No wonder, then, that it’s the site of one of the world’s premier competitions, the Triple Crown of Surfing. If hanging ten isn’t your thing, you can still enjoy the beautiful beaches – particularly famous Waikiki Beach in Honolulu. Art connoisseurs will appreciate the annual Hale'iwa Arts Festival, a celebration of local crafts, painting, jewelry, sculpture, dance, and music.
Island of Hawaii, Hawaii
Life on the Big Island is a little bit slower… and locals like it that way. The natural beauty and ecological features of the island are a draw for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Test your chutzpah at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, home to the longest volcanic eruption in recorded history, or climb to the indescribably beautiful summit of Mauna Kea.
Maui, Hawaii
The Hawaiian island of Maui is a destination for true nature lovers. The ethereal bamboo forest and churning waterfalls in Haleakala National Park can be explored via the Waimoku Falls Trail. Stretch out on warm, golden sands or hit the surf for an unforgettable windsurfing or snorkeling session. Driving the scenic road to Hana along the island’s northeastern shore will be among the most spectacular journeys of your life. Time stands still at the Hawaiian village of Keanae, definitely worth a visit.
New York City, New York
Conquering New York in one visit is impossible. Instead, hit the must-sees – the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, the Metropolitan Museum of Art – and then explore off the beaten path with visits to The Cloisters or one of the city’s libraries. Indulge in the bohemian shops of the West Village or the fine dining of the Upper West Side. The bustling marketplace inside of Grand Central Station gives you a literal taste of the best the city has to offer.
(CC) Carriage Inn, Music & Hi-Jinks at The Bower's Ball, Oct. 7, 1862
copyright Jim Surkamp
(for close-captioned click on cc in toolbar, click on)
This is a 13-minute video that includes several propfessionally played pieces of music from the Civil War era that, incidentally, were on the musical program at a ball October 7, 1862 at a place called the Bower in Jefferson County.
This video also has a truly hilarious - and true - episode in which a 250-pound man dresses up - including “a pillow-fed, palpitating bosum and huge fan” and tries somewhat successfully to pass for the date of a “Pennsylvania Farmer.” at same ball.
The music in this production: “Money Musk” (played with permission by Betsy Branch and David Kaynor); the Abbott family playing “Who’s Going Down To Town”; a version of “Don’t Get Weary Children” played by Uncle David Macon, re-written a little after the war; Stephen Foster’s “Farewell, My Lilly Dear” played with permission by Tom Rousch; and Rodney Jantzi plays Francis Abt’s “When Swallows Homewaerd Fly” on an organ that sounds very much like an 1860s melodeon.
Shana Aisenberg ( once again provides her rich sensitivity playing synthecizer, guitar, mandolin (Fisher’s Hornpipe), and banjo. The author of the Mel Bay’s instruction book for slide blues (Seth Austen), Shana can be reached for lessons, gigs and CDs, at her website. All these recordings are under her copyright.

Venice Menace: Famed City is Sinking & Tilting
Sea-level rise isn't the only thing that has Venice's famous canals rising ever-so-slightly every year: The city is also sinking, a new study shows, in contrast to previous studies that suggested the city's subsidence had stabilized.

Rivers of fast-moving lava flow from Hawaii's volcano
New, fast-moving lava poured from the flank of Hawaii's Kilauea volcano, destroying four more homes on the Big Island after a second explosive eruption shot a nearly 3.2km ash plume from the crater.
Molten rock from two huge cracks formed a single channel and travelled 300 metres in under an hour, twice the speed of previous flows of older lava that have torn through homes, roads and tropical forest for over two weeks, the County of Hawaii's Civil Defense Agency said.

September 2017 | Asian American Life
Asian American Life kicks off the new season featuring in-depth stories on history, arts and inspirational Asian American leaders.
There’s plenty of jazz institutions in major U.S. cities, but did you know that jazz has a long history in Asia as well? Reporter Paul Lin traces the roots of jazz and how jazz-inspired musicians in Asia made their way to the U.S.A to become recording stars.
In 2005, Monica Singh was a victim of an acid attack in New Delhi, India. After nearly fifty reconstruction surgeries and a series of traumatic experiences, she is pursing her dream of working in the fashion industry and has graced the catwalk during New York’s fashion week. Today, she is speaking out against gender-based violence and is using fashion to empower survivors. Reporter Tinabeth Pina shares Monica Singh’s inspirational and courageous story.
In the 1980’s, more than one million South Asian victims of war and genocide were granted asylum, and were resettled in the United States. It was the largest refugee resettlement program in our country’s history. Many Cambodians came to the Bronx at time when most people were leaving. Their story is told in the book “Unsettled: Cambodian Refugees in the New York City Hyperghetto.” Host Ernabel Demillo interviews the author of the book, Eric Tang, and a former Cambodian refugee and founder of Mekong NYC, Chhaya Chhoum.
For more than 30 years, Abacus Federal Savings Bank has been a place where New York’s Chinatown residents could obtain loans to buy their first home or start their first business. But this small family owned bank that helped immigrants to achieve their American dream recently endured its own nightmare in the aftermath of the financial crisis of 2008. The story of Abacus is the subject of a Frontline documentary, and reporter Kyung Yoon spoke with the family members of Abacus about their battle for justice.
Taped: 08/11/17
Ernabel Demillo is the host of Asian American Life, a monthly half hour series about the fastest-growing immigrant group in the country, focusing on Asian Americans in the tri-state area from over 40 countries who speak more than 150 different languages and dialects. Every month, an Asian enclave and neighborhood within the tristate area is featured. Cutting edge issues like racial profiling and stereotyping are examined and explored. Successful Asian Americans who are forging new identities in business, politics and the arts are also be profiled. Asian American Life is reaching new frontiers in the quest for understanding and acknowledgment among tri-state Asian Americans.
