Ross Flett from Orkney Seal Rescue brings Henry the common seal to Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary to be looked after while he goes away. Henry was found abandoned at BIrsay. We hope he thrives in Shetland.

Lost pilot whale in Vidlin Voe
Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary was called out to help a long finned pilot whale who was behaving unusually, spy hopping every few seconds as if it was upset or in trouble. We went out to Vidlin Voe and spent several hours observing it, returning later in the evening. It appears to be a healthy juvenile male who has become separated from his pod. After consulting with British Divers Marine Life Rescue in Sussex, we will keep it under observation in the hope it will find its way out to the open sea.

Rescuing grey seal entangled in fishing line
On Wednesday Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary was called out to help a grey seal that had befriended a local fishermen in Toft, Shetland. Alan Henry had been feeding the seal for several years. On Monday he was horrified to discover it had become entangled in a fishing line with hooks embedded in its lip and right front flipper. As it would have been impossible to capture the seal and remove the hooks, we used an improvised cutting tool to cut the line while Alan distracted the seal with a freshly caught mackerel. Now the seal can move its flipper freely and swim properly. The hooks are still embedded in its lip and flipper, but these should rust over time in the sea and the salt water should heal the wounds. Many thanks to everyone who helped with this challenging rescue.

Natureland Seal Sanctuary - Skegness - Cute Baby Seal Pups Rescued - Things To Do!
Video taken at the Skegness Natureland Seal Sanctuary. Nice place that do good work to save seals and release them back into the ocean!
You can really close to the seals which is great, don't get too close though!
Plenty of other animals here too like crocodiles, meer cats, goats, fish, butterflies and more.... well worth a visit.
