İzmir's Clock Tower, a beautiful marble tower in the middle of the Konak district, standing 25 m in height. It was designed by Levantine French architect Raymond Charles Père in 1901 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the ascension of Abdülhamid II to the Ottoman throne in 1876. The clock's workings were given as a gift by the German Kaiser Wilhelm II, a political ally.
İzmir Travel Guide - Turkey Amazing Atmosphere
İzmir Travel Guide - Turkey Amazing Atmosphere
Izmir is the third largest city in Turkey with a population of around 4 million, the second biggest port after Istanbul, and a very good transport hub. The fact that almost half of its population of 4 million are under the age of 30, makes İzmir a city full of life. The city hosts tens of thousands of university students, educates scientists, artists, business leaders and academics. It is a rapidly growing city on the Central Aegean coast of Turkey.
Once the ancient city of Smyrna, İzmir is now a modern, developed, and busy commercial center, set around a huge bay and surrounded by mountains. The broad boulevards, glass-fronted buildings and modern shopping centers are dotted with traditional red-tiled roofs, the 18th century market, and old mosques and churches, although the city has an atmosphere more of Mediterranean Europe than traditional Turkey.
İzmir owes its position as an economically and socially dynamic city to its location, climate and the fact that it has been a home to many different cultures and religions. Persians, Ancient Greeks, Assyrians, Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans are just a few of the dozens of different civilizations that the city has hosted throughout its long history.
Due to its geographical location, similar climatic features are observed in almost every part of the province. Since the average number of sunny days reaches up to almost 300 a year, the solar potential is very high in İzmir.
Public ferries are easy, fast inside the coast and gives a nice shot of Izmir. Preferable to every other transportation in nice weather. Popular routes include; Konak-Karsiyaka, Alsancak-Karsiyaka, Konak-Bostanli and Karsiyaka-Goztepe. There is an extensive public bus system which covers all of the city. Many taxis with reasonable price. There is also a metro line connecting city centre/Konak Square with the northeastern suburb of Bornova.
Izmir is a member of World Gourmet Cities Network (DELICE), a network with 22 cities from different parts of the world. Became a member in 2015, Izmir is the 23rd city in the network. In Izmir there are many hotels which are suitable for all tastes and budgets. Hilton, Swissotel and Movenpick are just a few minutes away by foot from Cumhuriyet Meydani (Republic Square) Hotel Ibis is very close to the city center, located nearby Alsancak Railway Station. Also there is Crowne Plaza, which is about 30 min. from center.
Standing on Mount Yamanlar, the tomb of Tantalus was excavated by Charles Texier in 1835 and is an example of the historic traces in the region prior to the Hellenistic Age, along with those found in nearby Kemalpaşa and Mount Sipylus. The Agora of Smyrna is well preserved, and is arranged into the Agora Open Air Museum of İzmir, although important parts buried under modern buildings wait to be brought to light. Serious consideration is also being given to uncovering the ancient theatre of Smyrna where St. Polycarp was martyred, buried under an urban zone on the slopes of Kadifekale.
One of the more pronounced elements of İzmir's harbor is the Clock Tower, a marble tower in the middle of the Konak district, standing 25 m (82 ft) in height. It was designed by Levantine French architect Raymond Charles Père in 1901 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the ascension of Abdülhamid II to the Ottoman throne in 1876. The clock's workings were given as a gift by the German Kaiser Wilhelm II, a political ally of Abdülhamid II.

İsa Bey Mosque, Selçuk, İzmir, Aegean Region, Turkey, Asia
The İsabey Mosque, constructed in 1374–75, is one of the oldest and most impressive works of architectural art remaining from the Anatolian beyliks. The mosque is situated on the outskirts of the Ayasluğ Hills at Selçuk, İzmir. It was built by the architect, 'Ali b. Mushaimish Dımışklıoğlu, in honor of the Aydinid İsa Bey. The plans for the mosque are based on the Great Mosque of Damascus. The mosque has two main entrances, to the east and to the west and contains a fountain court. The western wall has inscriptions and geometric shapes engraved. These walls are covered with marble, whereas the façades on the remaining sides are made of cut stone. It is built asymmetrically on a 48-by-56-metre (157 by 184 ft) base. The rims of its domes, with diameters of 9.4 metres (31 ft) and 8.1 metres (27 ft), are decorated with İznik (Nicaea) tiles. Twelve round columns stand inside its courtyard encircled with porches. Its brick minaret is built on an octagonal base, and the upper part from the balcony is ruined. The mosque had another minaret on the west, which is totally destroyed now. The mihrab (niche or altar) was moved to another mosque, due to a door opened there. There is an octagonal Seljuk türbe made of stone and bricks, with a pyramid shaped roof, right next to the mosque. By 1829, the mosque was in ruins and by 1842 the minaret had fallen down. In the 19th century, it was also used as a caravanserai.
Kızlarağası Han, Kemeralti bazaar. Izmir, Turkey
Kemeraltı is a historical market (bazaar) district of İzmir and Kızlarağası hani is the biggest and the most magnificent caravanserai of the city. Kızlarağası han was built very close to the west side of the Hisar mosque which was built by Yakup Bey in 1598 and nowadays is the biggest mosque of Izmir. The construction of the Han, built by Kızlarağası Hacı Beşir Ağa, started in 1744 and finished in 1745. The has was damaged several times by fire and earthquake after 1779.
Pergamon, İzmir, Aegean, Turkey, Asia
Pergamon was a rich and powerful ancient Greek city in Aeolis. It is located 26 kilometres from the modern coastline of the Aegean Sea on a promontory on the north side of the river Caicus and northwest of the modern city of Bergama. During the Hellenistic period, it became the capital of the Kingdom of Pergamon under the Attalid dynasty in 281-133 BC, who transformed it into one of the major cultural centres of the Greek world. Many remains of its impressive monuments can still be seen and especially the outstanding masterpiece of the Pergamon Altar. Pergamon is cited in the Book of Revelation as one of the seven churches of Asia. The city centres around a 335 metre high mesa of andesite, which formed its acropolis. This mesa falls away sharply on the north, west, and east sides, but three natural terraces on the south side provide a route up to the top. To the west of the acropolis, the Selinus river (modern Bergamaçay) flow through the city, while the Cetius (modern Kestelçay) passes by to the east.

20110920 Türkiye, İzmir
Every holiday a breakfast like this in this ambiance makes a holiday unforgettable! The weather is fine as it was all our days before. All people around us are at ease. This is paradise!
After breakfast a small bus takes us to İzmir, Turkey's third biggest city. On our way to it our bus picks up our guide, a Turk in his thirties who speaks German fluently. He must be a historian or at least a history teacher, so much information he is able to give.
After Sefarihisar we take the highway to İzmir and enjoy beautiful landscapes and sea views passing by.
Our goal is the Hisar Camii mosque and adjacent karavanserai. A karavanserai is a kind of a giant inn for one or more caravans (caravan in the meaning of a herd of camels carrying cargo on their backs) which were centuries ago established in a raster of forty kilometres one from another. That's the distance a camel can walk in one day. The karavanserai provides besides shelter and good food for the guests and their animals also plateaus for worshipping as during the day islamic caravan people mostly don't have the opportunity for worshiping.
Turkey seems to be the only Islamic country where non islamic visitors are allowed to enter mosques. They should be decently dressed and a guard looks to it and appears to have gear at hand to camouflage shorts, miniskirts and boops.
The interior of the mosque Hizar Camii appears to be wonderful!
Eventually we stroll to the nearby bazar, to an open air coffee house, to the ferry boat. The greenish vessel which shows up in the middle of the screen has recently been dredged from the bottom of this gulf. A water tour follows with views of a passing cruiser, the silhouette of İzmir which appears to be a modern city apart from the old centre around the Hisar Camii mosque
At the end of the day back in 'our' cosy Club Resort Atlantis a traditional Turkish buffet is waiting for us. Three Turkish female cooks are prostrated in front of the restaurant preparing enormous pancake like pastry.
Back in our room we are surprised by again an new towel design with green leaves on our bed. A talented chamber maid is spoiling us!

Konak (Yalı) Mosque
Yalı Mosque (Yalı Camii), also called Konak Mosque, is a Mosque in İzmir, Turkey. It is located on Konak Square in the heart of the city next to the Governor's Mansion and the İzmir Clock Tower. Despite its relatively small size, it is considered one of the landmarks of the city for its distinctive octagonal shape and elaborate tilework.
The Mosque was constructed in 1755 under the patronage of Ayşe Hanım, the wife of Katipzade Mehmet Paşa who governed İzmir at the time. The outer tiles were brought from Kütahya. It has a single dome and minaret and unusually for a mosque, only one entrance. The interior is lit by a chandelier by Ümran Baradan.

KEMERALTI, IZMIR ,TURKEY
Kemeraltı is a historical market (bazaar) district of İzmir, Turkey. It was originally formed around the street surrounding the shallow inner bay of the city, which was filled in due course during the 17th century, availing the bazaar to be extended to a wider area. The street, that traces a wide curve and called today as Anafartalar Street (Caddesi), and known historically as the Street of the Mevlevis, in reference to the presence of a dergah (a building designed for gatherings of a Sufi brotherhood) situated by the street, constitutes the principal axis of Kemeraltı. The district covers a vast area extending from the level of the Agora of Smyrna (the quarters of Namazgah, Mezarlıkbaşı and İkiçeşmelik), to the seashore along the Konak Square. It remains one of the liveliest parts of İzmir.
The first step that paved the way for the emergence of the present-day Kemeraltı area was the building in 1592 of Hisar Mosque. It is the oldest and one of the most significant Ottoman landmarks in İzmir, although built by Aydınoğlu Yakup Bey, a descendant of the dynasty that had founded the Beylik of the same name (Aydinids) which had controlled İzmir prior to the Ottoman conquest. The name of the mosque, which means fortress, makes reference to the Genoese castle of San Pietro, previously called Neon Kastron in Byzantine times, part of which used to stand on the same location and which gradually disappeared in whole with the construction of new buildings on its spot. The final remains of the castle were cleared up during the construction of new port installations between 1867-1876.
The market itself came into existence with the filling between 1650-1670 of the shallowest parts of the inner bay. The process of gaining ground from the bay was pursued in 1744 with the construction of Kızlarağası Han, a still-standing impressive caravanserai that emerged as the nucleus of the market, together with two older hans, the term implying a caravanserai with more markedly urban characteristics, that have not survived to this day. These was the Great Vezir Han constructed by the 17th century grand vizier Köprülü Fazıl Ahmed Pasha, and the neighboring Little Vezir Han constructed by his successor Merzifonlu Kara Mustafa Pasha. Another historically important and no longer existing han was Cezayir Han (literally Han of Algiers), from where western Anatolia's excess labor force had been annually dispatched to the Ottoman protectorate of Algiers for centuries. In fact, among the hundred odd hans Kemeraltı counted at the beginning of the 20th century, and clearly visible on a 1905 map drawn by French cartographers on behalf of international insurance companies, only a dozen remain, in full or in part, while most were destroyed during the 1922 Great Fire of Smyrna or afterwards. The remaining part of the inner bay was allowed to silt up progressively throughout the 18th century, the shoreline facing Kemeraltı took its present straight form in the beginning of the 19th, although some of the land along the berth remained unused until the end of that century. In 1829, Sarı Kışla, the Yellow Barracks, the principal Ottoman barracks of the city, gigantic for its time, was built immediately on the sea-side, and a private residence (konak), situated slightly diagonally behind the barracks, was extended and converted into the governor's mansion, demarcating Konak Square that holds its name from the mansion, and which in its turn gave the name to the central metropolitan district of İzmir (Konak) and at the level of which Kemeraltı is considered to start. The governor's mansion still stands, although the Yellow Barracks was demolished in 1955 under instructions from the then Prime Minister Adnan Menderes, who wanted to see Konak Square re-shaped, to the ongoing regret of many Izmirians who had come to adopt the oversize building as one of the main landmarks of their city.
