Wandering Around Japan Pt.4 - Iwakuni & Miyajima - 16 days in Japan 2016
Wandering Around Japan Pt.4 Iwakuni & Miyajima - 16 days in Japan. I went down to Iwakuni for a couple days and did a day trip to Miyajima Island. The boat ride is only about 20 minutes and mellow. Miyajima is a nice place to hike, shop, chill and lots of deer wandering around but they don't really bother you.

JAPAN BY TRAIN: Hakodate - Aomori - Hirosaki - Odate - Akita [HD] (01/Jan/2014)
Video footage recorded during my trip all over Japan between December 27th 2013 and January 10th 2014.
This clip includes images of the Hakodate - Aomori - Hirasaki - Odate - Akita journey, with train changes at some stations and under heavy snow storm sometimes. The Hakodate - Aomori line connects the Hokkaido and the Honshu islands through the undersea Seikan tunnel.
Please note that these videos do not intend to show the tourist attractions at the cities I stop at, but the journey itself (particularly the train routes). For castles, monuments or colourful streets I preferred taking photographs... Sorry for that!

This is Part 1 of our amazing trip to Japan, a 15 day (wish it had been 3 months) whistle stop tour organised by Virgin Holidays.
We chose mid October, which as it turned out is a little too early for the Autumn colours. Well, except at Mt Fuji! Wedding photography commitments plus the tour we chose (Japan Panorama) dictated the dates we could go. So November would be a better time, at least in central Honshu, Japan's main Island.
The only downside was the weather! It just rained for the first week, 90% of the time. However, we did have a Typhoon midway through, so just our bad luck I guess.
Still, the 2nd week was a lot better and anyway, it didn't dampen our spirits as we reveled in the mix of tradition, culture and Tech which is Japan!
Much more to come and thanks for watching!

Tokyo Sugamo Kiku (Chrysanthemum) Matsuri - 巣鴨菊まつり - 4K Ultra HD
Tokyo Sugamo Kiku (chrysanthemum) Matsuri - 巣鴨菊まつり - 4K Ultra HD : In many western countries, the chrysanthemum, or Kiku, are flowers used for funerals. In Japan, the Kiku has a very different meaning: It is the country’s official symbol. The Japanese monarchy is referred to as the “Chrysanthemum Throne”. The imperial crest uses a stylized version of the Kiku blossom. You can even find the Kiku blossom on the 50 yen coin and the Japanese passport.
Many temples, such as Sugamo’s Shinshoji Temple, have Kiku festivals (Matsuri). Most Kiku Matsuri happen in November.
As we finish our tour of Sugamo Kiku Matsuri and its temple, we will take some time to enjoy the magnificent, 300-year-old, 2.68 meter tall copper statue of Jizo Bosatsu.
Dōzō Jirō Bosatsu Zazō (Edo Roku Jizō no Hitotsu)
Jizo Monk Shogen who resided in Fukagawa, Edo, was struck by incurable disease. After praying with his parents to cure the disease of Jizo Bosatsu, Shogen was healed. Statues of six Jizoes were created in Kyoto, followed by a collection of public donations in 1706 to erect these statues. A statue of Jizo Bosatsu was erected at each of six locations in Edo. The body and the lotus-shaped pedestal of each statue were incised with the names of solicitors and the year of construction. The statues were cast by Caster Ota Suruganokami Masayoshi in Kandanabe town. An anti-Buddhist movement at the beginning of the Meiji period destroyed one of the Jizo Bosatsu at Eitaiji Temple in Fukagawa. Currently there are five remaining statues.
The statue of Jizo at Shinshoji Temple was erected in 1714 as the fourth statue. During its restoration from 2008 to 2010, four copper statues of a seated Jizo Bosatsu and many copper and wooden tablets were found inside the body of the statue. After the restoration was completed, those objects were put back inside the statue.
The height of the statue is 2.68 meters, and used to be gold-plated. Currently, the statue is designated as an important cultural property because the it was rather elaborate for the mid-Edo period. There are only a few surviving statues from this time period.

Kyoto - Japan
Kyoto is a city in the central part of the island of Honshu, Japan. It has a population close to 1.5 million. Formerly the imperial capital of Japan for more than one thousand years, it is now the capital of Kyoto Prefecture, as well as a major part of the Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe metropolitan area. With temples, parks, bustling business districts, markets, from regal estates to the tightly-packed neighborhoods, Kyoto is one of the oldest and most famous Asian metropolises.
CultureAlthough ravaged by wars, fires, and earthquakes during its eleven centuries as the imperial capital, Kyoto was spared from much of the destruction of World War II. It was removed from the atomic bomb target list (which it had headed) by the personal intervention of Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson, as Stimson wanted to save this cultural center which he knew from his honeymoon and later diplomatic visits. With its 2000 religious places- 1600 Buddhist temples and 400 Shinto shrines, as well as palaces, gardens and architecture intact, it is one of the best preserved cities in Japan. Among the most famous temples in Japan are Kiyomizu-dera, a magnificent wooden temple supported by pillars off the slope of a mountain; Kinkaku-ji, the Temple of the Golden Pavilion; Ginkaku-ji, the Temple of the Silver Pavilion; and Ryōan-ji, famous for its rock garden. The Heian Jingū is a Shinto shrine, built in 1895, celebrating the Imperial family and commemorating the first and last emperors to reside in Kyoto. Three special sites have connections to the imperial family: the Kyoto Gyoen area including the Kyoto Imperial Palace and Sento Imperial Palace, homes of the Emperors of Japan for many centuries; Katsura Imperial Villa, one of the nation's finest architectural treasures; and Shugaku-in Imperial Villa, one of its best Japanese gardens. In addition, the temple of Sennyu-ji houses the tombs of the emperors from Shijō to Kōmei.Other sites in Kyoto include Arashiyama, the Gion and Pontochō geisha quarters, the Philosopher's Walk, and the canals which line some of the older streets. The Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto are listed by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. These include the Kamo Shrines (Kami and Shimo), Kyō-ō-Gokokuji (Tō-ji), Kiyomizu-dera, Daigo-ji, Ninna-ji, Saihō-ji (Kokedera), Tenryū-ji, Rokuon-ji (Kinkaku-ji), Jishō-ji (Ginkaku-ji), Ryōan-ji, Hongan-ji, Kōzan-ji and the Nijō Castle, primarily built by the Tokugawa shoguns. Other sites outside the city are also on the list.Kyoto is renowned for its abundance of delicious Japanese foods and cuisine. The special circumstances of Kyoto as a city away from the sea and home to many Buddhist temples resulted in the development of a variety of vegetables peculiar to the Kyoto area (kyōyasai, 京野菜).Japan's television and film industry has its center in Kyoto. Many jidaigeki, action films featuring samurai, were shot at Toei Uzumasa Eigamura.A film set and theme park in one, Eigamura features replicas of traditional Japanese buildings which are used for jidaigeki. Among the sets are a replica of the old Nihonbashi (the bridge at the entry to Edo), a traditional courthouse, a Meiji Period police box and part of the former Yoshiwara red-light district. Actual film shooting takes place occasionally, and visitors are welcome to observe the action. The dialect spoken in Kyoto is known as Kyō-kotoba or Kyōto-ben, a constituent dialect of the Kansai dialect. When Kyoto was the capital of Japan, Kyoto dialect was the de facto standard Japanese and influenced on development of Tokyo dialect, the modern standard Japanese. Famous Kyoto expressions are a polite copula dosu, a honorific verb ending -haru and etc.Kyoto International Manga Museum is also situated in Kyoto. For an entrance fee visitors are able to view exhibitions and read as much manga as they desire. The museum is making an attempt to acquire every manga ever published and so far houses approximately 200,000 titles.Wikipedia
