Hawaii
Aloha! Waikiki, hula, muumuu, Honolulu? You don't know what we are taking about? Check out the top ten of Hawaii by Foreign Service Officer Catherine Muller. Did you know that surfing was invented by native Hawaiians? Or that Hawaii was once a monarchy? #50states #HI
Transcript:
Aloha! My name is Catherine and I come from the beautiful state of Hawaii. Hawaii was discovered by Polynesians between the 3rd and 7th centuries A.D. It was later explored by British Captain James Cook in 1778. Hawaii became a U.S. territory in 1898, and the 50th state of the U.S. on August 21, 1959.
When most people think of Hawaii, they think of Honolulu and our famous Waikiki Beach. We'll get to that in a minute, but did you know that Hawaii actually consists of 137 islands? Most people will only visit a few of the main 8 Hawaiian Islands. They are: O'ahu, Maui, Hawai'i, Kaua'i, Moloka'I, Lana'i, Ni'ihau, and Kaho'olawe. The most populated island is Oahu where the capitol city of Honolulu is located. It also happens to be my home island, and is nicknamed the gathering place.
I'd like to give you my Hawaii Top Ten! These are facts, places, and experiences that I think make my Hawaii unique.
Number 10: Hawaii is known as the land of aloha shirts and mu'umu'us. Both aloha shirts and loose dresses called mu'umu'us have bright Polynesian patterns.
Number 9: Many people only know Hawaii by what they see on TV and in movies. Classic American TV shows like Magnum PI and Hawaii Five-O were set in Hawaii. What about Jurassic Park, Avatar, and the hit TV show LOST? Hawaii's landscape has inspired many a film and TV producer.
Number 8: A vital part of the Hawaiian culture is hula. Hula is a Hawaiian form of dance that is accompanied by chanting or song and tells the stories, traditions, and culture of the Hawaiian people. Hula is performed in big fancy luaus for tourists, as well as in backyards at pretty much any special occasion. For example, I danced a hula at my wedding, a common practice at Hawaiian weddings today.
Number 7: If you come to my state, you can visit the only royal palace in the US that was used by a reigning monarch- 'Iolani Palace. In 1810, King Kamehameha, chief of the Big Island of Hawai'i, united all the Islands into one kingdom. In 1893, the monarchy was overthrown by American businessmen and a provisional government was established. Today, 'Iolani Palace is open to the public as a historic museum and shares the history of the Hawaiian Monarchy.
Number 6: The Dole Pineapple Plantation. In 1901 the Hawaiian Pineapple Company, now Dole, was established and the first pineapples were planted in Wahiawa. Other important crops in Hawaii include sugar, macadamia nuts, coffee, flowers, and seeds. I encourage you to try one of my favorite snacks, chocolate covered macadamia nuts. They are ono! That means delicious in the Hawaiian language.
Let's move on to Number 5: The U.S.S. Arizona Memorial. It marks the resting place of 1,102 sailors that were killed on the USS Arizona during the attack on Pearl Harbor by
Japanese forces on December 7, 1941. In 1949 the Pacific War Memorial Commission was created to build a permanent memorial in Hawaii. The US Navy insisted that it be in the form of a bridge floating above the ship.
Now we come to Number 4: Surfing! The first known occurrences of surfing come from the ancient Hawaiian tradition of he'e nalu, or wave sliding. In the early 1900s news about surfing had made its way to California, and in 1915, famed Hawaiian surfer and Olympic swimmer Duke Kahanamoku introduced surfing to Australia. In the 1950s surfers started tackling the big waves of the North Shore of Oahu, and today competitions are held at Banzai Pipeline, Sunset Beach, and Waimea Bay.
Moving on to Number 3: Hawaii is known for its active volcanoes. Hawaii emerged from the sea millions of years ago, forged by the power of volcanoes. If you visit the Big Island of Hawai'i, you can visit Maunaloa or Kilauea at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where you can come face to face with an active volcano.
Number 2! I'd like to tell you a little about native Hawaiian food. Today, you can find a fusion of many cuisines, but traditional Hawaiian food is still popular and delicious. If you visit my state, I encourage you to try poi, made from the starchy taro root. You can try kalua pig, a favorite at most luaus. Kalua pig is traditionally cooked in an imu, an earth oven in which the pig will roast and steam for about 12 hours!
Number 1 is the famous Waikiki Beach. Waikiki was once the playground of the Hawaiian Royalty. The name, Waikiki, means spouting waters and is Oahu's main hotel and tourist area. Here you can find world class restaurants and shopping, as well as one of the busiest beaches in the Hawaiian Islands. If you want to try a more gentle surfing lesson than you'd find on the North Shore, Waikiki is a good starting point.

64 Foot Wave - Mike Parsons At Jaws Beach, Hawaii
Mike Parsons (born March 13, 1965, in California) is an american professional surfer and surfing coach.
Parsons was raised in Laguna Beach, California and began surfing when he was six-years-old. In 1983, he earned second place in the Junior Division of the United States Surfing Championships.
In 2001, Parsons was towed into a 66-foot wave at Cortes Bank, CA, for which he was awarded $66,000 the highest prize ever awarded in the history of professional surfing. This money was awarded by the Billabong XXL competition which paid tribute to the biggest waves ridden each year. Parsons also surfed a 64-foot wave during competition at the Jaws break on the north shore of Maui. It was filmed by helicopter and used as the opening scene of the 2003 film Billabong Odyssey. A usually uncredited clip of this sequence has gone on to become a viral video, attributed to a number of different surfers, locations, and in many cases, a Tsunami.
Parsons later broke his record on January 5, 2008, at Cortes Bank, when he was photographed surfing a wave that the Billabong XXL judged to be 77 feet, which put him in the Guinness Book of World Records, officially, for biggest wave ever surfed. Nearly 4 years later Garrett McNamara improved on this record with a 78-foot wave off Nazaré, Portugal on November 1, 2011.
In 2011, Parsons became the full-time coach for surfer Kolohe Andino.
On January 20, 2013, Parsons suffered a broken C7 vertebra in his neck and nearly drowned while surfing triple-overhead surf at Ocean Beach, a beach break in San Francisco, California. Parsons was able to return to surfing four months later.
Parsons was inducted into the Surfer's Hall of Fame in Huntington Beach, California in 2008.

Shawn Dohmen's iDcard - Great Savings at the Palm of Your Hand
Saving money has never been more important especially in these financially trying times. From discount coupons to group buying sites, people will always try to find ways to save up on their purchases.
Enter the iDcard. Brainchild of young entrepreneur and self-styled Cheap Executive Officer (CEO) Shawn Dohmen of Isle Discount in Honolulu, the iDcard was conceptualized and introduced in the area way back in 2010 to help both merchants and buyers.
What is the iDcard?
The iDcard is comprised of a large exclusive network of retailers, restaurants, shops, bars, nightclubs, hotels, and other commercial establishments in Hawaii, Nevada, and New Jersey that offers major discounts on services and goods. The discounts can be claimed by people who own an iDcard, which would also signify their membership to the network.
What do the business owners and local entrepreneurs get out of this set up? First off, they get valuable free advertising. All iDcard sponsors get a chance to be featured on the network's website, partner promotions, and official mobile apps for absolutely no charge. These sponsors get to choose how much savings they would like to offer customers. They also get to retain 100% of all the income from the publicity from iDcard's networks.
Those who want discounts from these establishments can purchase an iDcard. Unlike other discount cards, an iDcard is valid not just on the calendar year itself, but for a full year starting from the date of purchase. It can also be reused over and over again unlike one-time use coupons. The iDcard comes in a wide variety of customizable designs and can be personalized with the owner's name in embossed print.
The iDcard Today
Back when the iDcard was first introduced in 2010, people thought that Shawn Dohmen was crazy for coming up with the idea. They told him that it just wouldn't work. But nearly four years later, they are proven wrong. WIth a little help from Carlos Asuncion and Randy Graham, Cheap Development Officers (CDO) of the iDcard venture, iDcard has now grown into one of the most extensive discount networks in Hawaii, with thousands of sponsors and affiliated establishments in Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and Big Island. It has also expanded into two other states, namely Nevada and New Jersey.
Some of the businesses that support iDcard include Kincaid's, Menchie's, Buffalo Wild Wings, Makani Catamaran, Ewa Beach Golf Course, Germaine's Luau, San Lorenzo Bikinis, and Teddy's Bigger Burgers. The amount of discounts depend on the establishment, and often range from 10% up to 50% off on most goods and services.
Where can I get an iDcard?
Idcards are available for purchase at the Isle Discount official online store ( for $40. Shipping is free! The cards are expected to arrive one to two days after purchase. Customers can choose from the many colorful designs that are available on the site; they also get to specify the name that will be embossed on the card itself.
Aside from the official online store, iDcards can also be purchased at a discount through the various fundraisers that iDcard and Isle Discount supports.
Why get an iDcard?
The iDcard is pefect for loyal customers of the establishments that are included in the iDcard discount network. Aside from discounts on goods and services, iDcard members also have the opportunity to receive freebies, join promotions, and be featured on the official iDcard social media pages.
Whether it's eating out a restaurant, staying at a hotel room, renting a car, buying souvenirs, or surfing at a beach, iDcard is here to help people save money. It's convenient and easy-to-use; just look for establishments with the iDcard sticker, and present the iDcard when making a purchase. All the affiliated establishments and shops can be found on the official iDcard website at theidcard.com or islediscount.com.
The iDcard works on the premise that being able to save money, allows people to spend more on the things that they love. With that said, the iDcard is one of the best investments that you'll ever make this year. At the price of just $40, you can potentially save hundreds and even thousands of dollars just from shopping at your favorite establishments and stores alone. Not only do you get to save money, you also help out the local businesses in your area.
iDcard / Isle Discount Commercial featuring Shawn Dohmen, Jenny Kim, Aureana Tseu, Moani Hara, Sophia Pieridis, Kelsey Campbell, Melissa McMurray, Ashely Clay, Buffalo Wild Wings, Menchie's, San Lorenzo Bikini's, Chili's, UFC Gym, and Charthouse Waikiki.
Haleiwa Beach Reef Hawaiian Pro Set Up Days

Surfers compete in Hawaii
Surfers take to the waves on the second day of competition at the Reef Hawaiian Pro for the chance to take home the $100,000 (£63,000) prize money.
Australian Tom Whitaker, American Nat Young, and Brazilian Willian Cardoso were among the highest heat scorers of the day and easily advanced.
American Torrey Meister scored the first perfect 10 of the week after surviving a double tube ride but failed to advance after being unable to put together another solid run and placed third in his heat.
Waves hit Haleiwa Beach on Hawaii's North Shore in the 8 to 12 foot range giving the competitors what could be the best day of surf with the forecast calling for swells to subside after the weekend.
Competition in the round of 64 is set to begin Saturday morning with 32 riders advancing to the next round. The event winner will take home $100,000 (£63,000).

North Shore Big Waves at Turtle Bay Oahu Hawaii
North Shore Big Waves at Turtle Bay Oahu Hawaii
I drove up from Honolulu to Turtle bay to do a little surfing, and to do some underwater filming. The waves were a little rougher than I prefer for surfing; these were waves like on the Oregon coast, and I can get plenty of those at home. So I was a bit disappointed about the waves, so rather then get wet, I decided to play a round of golf instead. So this video here is as close as I came to surfing and snorkeling at Turtle Bay.

From the website:
Turtle Bay (view panorama) marks the entrance to the legendary North Shore, one of the most scenic stretches of Oahu's coastline. The bay is named after the large number of green sea turtles that inhabit the area and who used to lay their eggs in the sand on the beach years ago (however, they don't do this anymore).

Turtle Bay is located between Protection Point and Kuilima Point on the North Shore of the island of O'ahu in the U.S. state of Hawaii.

The state capital, Honolulu, is on Oʻahu's southeast coast. Including small close-in offshore islands such as Ford Island and the islands in Kaneohe Bay and off the eastern (windward) coast, it has a total land area of 596.7 square miles (1,545.4 km2), making it the 20th largest island in the United States

Whales and waves at Ke Iki Beach, North Shore, Oahu
One of the thrills of visiting the North Shore of Oahu in winter is seeing the huge waves, and following the journeys of the Humpback Whales. This video captures a bit of both, I hope.
62 - Hawaii: Land of Volcanoes, Beaches and Pearl Harbor
This video marks a (dare I say: triumphant?!) return to the chronicles of our world travels. After helping safely deliver s/v Julia across the Pacific, we were in no hurry to leave Hawaii, especially since neither of us had ever visited before!
We spent a week in total which included a quick road trip around the big island of Hawaii (yes, it's its own island) visiting the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park as well as a few of the more colorful beaches.
But I have to say the highlight of the week was getting to visit Pearl Harbor. It was a very sobering experience, matched only by my visit to Normandy years earlier, but it was an important reminder of the tragedies of war and the sacrifices of previous generations to help deliver us to where we are today. If you visit Oahu, it should be a must stop.
The next video will be back aboard Starry Horizons in Tonga, so be sure to subscribe and check back for more of our South Pacific adventures! And don't forget to take a look at our blog and Facebook page for more update to date look at where we are now:

WHIPPING HONOLULU FOR HALALU!
After going to the hospital for a hit-n-run injury i decided to check an area that was expecting it's yearly run of Halalu (young Akule), common name Big Eye Scads to see if the school started it's annual yearly appearance. It did. I only had my light travel whipping rod in my truck for emergencies like this so i started hooking-up. Maybe only 15 of us were there. I called my friend Wayne to come down & meet me. By the time he arrived the anglers have doubled. We went off from everyone else as i was eyeing a separated school. We were hooking in 2ft and the Papio (Trevally Jacks under 10lbs) were tearing-up the school. Next thing we know everyone jumped where we were. That's Halalu fishing. There was a Filipino guy in blue jeans and blue shirt that only cared for himself. Tangled me up by whipping literally whipping directly over my shoulder, never said sorry. He was giving everyone headaches. Karma will catch up with non-courteous anglers like him. I was only armed with my Iphone 6, no video unit as i was in town getting x-rays and shots. So this small intro was the best i could do. I decided to post today as it seems that place is now a hot bed of anglers as of yesterday (didn't want to pre-maturely ruin it for others to early). Personally i hate crowds and fishing with others that show no courtesy. I have my own places that i can fish that's away from the known scenes. I don't fish for bringing home fish, i fish for relaxation and for the action. Fish i do keep i give to surrounding homeless & friends. Just remember to be safe & be respectful to others fishing around you.
