ITINERARY:

ROME: 3 days
-- BUS (Flixbus) from Rome to Naples (~2hrs)
NAPLES REGION: 4 days (Capri, Pompeii, Amalfi Coast - Positano, Sorrento).
ROOFTOP AIRBNB: We stayed in an incredible Airbnb in Portici (just outside of Naples) with a rooftop ALL to ourselves!
The Italian host family was so kind and inviting! We will always remember Mama Lucia and her husband Dino :)
We paid 35 euros per night for 2 people (so about 17 euros each) - pretty good price! Location was perfect, right beside the train station Portici Via Libertà which took us to downtown Naples, Pompeii, Sorrento. I highly recommend this Airbnb! Here's the link:
-- BUS (buscenter.it) overnight bus from Naples to Palermo, Sicily (~10 hrs)
SICILY (rented a car)
PALERMO (3 days) - Mondello Beach!
TRAPANI (3 days) - Trapani downtown, Erice, Scopello, Riserva naturale dello Zingaro! (you definitely need a car to drive to the parks outside of Trapani)

DRIVING THRU ITALY TO FLORENCE, TUSCANY, ROME, POMPEII, SORRENTO & AMALFI, Our Ancient Civilization Trip
Our two week Ancient Civilization trip continues. We leave Greece and Fly to Italy. We start in Florence. Here we stay at the Sina Villa Medici Marriott Autograph Hotel. This property is in a great location for walking everything in the historic area of Florence. We climbed the duomo (make sure to make your reservations as only so many people can climb at once). We visited the Medici Palazzo (house) and walked the Ponte Vecchio (the bridge with the houses on it). We tried to attend church but with a marathon going on we could not make it as the running line trapped us in the historic center. I had the best truffle pasta at Hostaria Il Desco.
After Florence we loaded into our 9 passenger van, which makes total sense in the USA and not so much in ancient cities; and drove thru Tuscany on our way down to Rome. We did the Chianti region which was beautiful, full of charm, and even though it was rainy and cold the hills were still full of color.
In Rome we stayed at the Marriott Grand Hotel Flora, here we had a two bedroom which was fun to be all together. This hotel is next to the ancient wall and close to the Vatican City. The first morning we headed out early to the Vatican City. Here we had a tour guide so we skipped the line into the museum, saw the Sistine Chapel, St Peters Basilica and admired all the marble.
Afterwards we headed toward the Colosseum and had a 2 hour lunch at a restaurant that really knows how to make yummy soup. Gli Angeletti its on Via dell'Angeletto, 3, Roma
After warming up with soup we headed over to the Colosseum ran around for a bit, then took a crazy cab ride back to the hotel.
That night steer being exhausted from a long day we stayed in with room service.
The next morning we packed up and drove down to Pompeii. This was what Turner really wanted to see on this trip. Pompeii was much larger than I ever thought and we spent about 2 hours walking thru the 165 acre complex.
Then we continued on to Sorrento where we had an AirB&B in the heart of Sorrento. The location and space was great. In fact its by a Super Host and overall it was fine and would work for my family of 6 if we returned.
However, I don't know if I will ever go back to Sorrento or the Amalfi coast. I felt like its this hyped up place but in all honesty there really isn't anything special. We all agreed it felt like the whole area had been turned into a destination for cruise ships, the food isn't great and everything about it feels extremely tourist. Solerno at the end of the coast is actually better. Still we had trouble finding well prepared food. We were not on a budget but seriously finding really well prepared food in Italy was difficult no matter what we spent. Its frustrating because you think Italy will have amazing food flowing everywhere but the truth is that because so many areas only cater to tourists I think they lower their quality and change the authenticity to suit what travelers think they want. I had the best luck with soups. The truffle pasta in Florence and actually the pizza crust in Sorrento was really good.
After Sorrento, we drove back to Rome and took a flight to Istanbul. Turkey is a true highlight of this trip.

Travel tips -- Port of Naples, Italy
Helpful information for travelers visiting the port of Naples, Italy and the Amalfi Coast! Arriving in Naples, Italy by cruise ship? Watch this brief video to see how to exit the cruise terminal, pass through security, and find an ATM and local ground transportation for day tours to Sorrento, Positano, Pompeii, Amalfi and more.
Here we are in Italy - Amalfi Coast - Part 2 Positano
This is a travelogue of our 2010 vacation in the Amalfi Coast area of Italy in seven parts, showing what we did and what travel around the Amalfi Coast is like.
In part two we arrive in Positano, enjoy the gracious hospitality of our hosts at Hotel Villa delle Palme and savour the glow of the setting sun and local Campania red wine on our own private Terrace. Ahh! Pure heaven.
We settle in for several days, enjoying walks, gorgeous views, narrow stepped lanes and Fornillo beach (prefered by locals).
We then spend an evening at the family-run Ristorante Mediterraneo where we have a delicious dinner and our waiter and new friend Lorenzo entertains, then crash a choir practice during our evening walk.
The Milo family have run Viilla delle Palme for five generations. They are typical of the friendly family run hotels and B&B's in Italy that I have come to love. Why Villa delle Palme is not in Rick Steve's Italy Guidebook is a mystery... Rick...are you reading this? ...Hire me!!

Positano is BEAUTIFUL! Vlogging through Italy (travel)
We head to Positano Italy with Kelly. Positano is a cliffside village on southern Italy's Amalfi Coast. The beach is a pebble beachfront and steep, narrow streets are lined with boutiques and cafes. And there are stairs. A LOT of stairs ???? But worth the travel to catch the sun!

14-DAY ROAD TRIP IN ITALY (From Milano to Napoli)
From the 16th of April to the 30th of April, Alex and I did a 14-day Road trip in Italy, all the way from Milano to Napoli.
Music by Tobu
We did this Road Trip in collaboration with as a way to show others that it doesn't have to be expensive to travel in Italy.
You can read more about the different places in my blog ➡️
Follow me on Social media ⤵️
On our way to Napoli, we stopped in Genoa, Cinque Terre, Pisa, Florence, Tuscany, Amalfi Coast and finally Naples!
We traveled by train and rental car, and in Cinque Terre, we also did some hiking across the five villages. Italy is such a beautiful country, and after this road trip, It has become one of my favorite countries.
The Italian people are so warm and welcoming. In Tuscany, we did a Homestay for 3 nights, and it was such a lovely experience. Home-cooked food, I mean REAL Italian style food, made by Rina, our lovely host in Montegonzi!
While staying at the homestay in Tuscany, I even got the chance to learn about olive trees and how it's being made. Battista, who's Rina's husband and our host as well owns almost 500 olive trees!
And, Florence, Milano, so beautiful! Everything about it is amazing, the vibe and old buildings, and again the FOOD!
Sorrento-Naples-Amalfi Coast
My girlfriend Deb and I visited in the middle of September 2019 for a week. It was Deb's first time to Italy and many years since I had been, only going as far south as Rome.
We flew into Milan, initially planning to take the train to Naples, but the timing would have put us in late, so we got a flight on EasyJet into Naples. I booked our taxi through booking.com which was wonderful. Our driver was waiting for us when we arrived, and he recommended a great restaurant that was just around the corner from our hotel. We stayed at Donna Lena Relais. It was an easy walk to the ferry for Sorrento the next day. Make sure you have cash for the fare! Fortunately, a nice lady let me get back in the front of the line after being told they wouldn't accept a credit card.
Donna Lena Relais:
The ferry arrives at Marina Piccola in Sorrento. Deb and I stayed in Colli di Fontanelle. Italy has agriturismo accommodations which are on farms. We were at Gli Ulivi Agriturismo with hosts Kelly and Peppino. Kelly speaks very good English. It is beautiful, peaceful, away from the tourist crowds, and has great views. I found it on booking.com, but here's their website:
We took a ferry to the island of Ischia one day and got a whirlwind tour from a taxi driver. We both hope to go back someday and stay on the island. There are gardens, thermal baths, numerous beaches and little towns to explore.
Our hostess Kelly helped us with booking a boat tour of the Amalfi Coast. I'm trying to learn Italian, but it's not that good yet! We got picked up in Colli di Fontanelle where we were staying and taken to Nerano to board the boat then dropped off back in Colli afterwards. The boat made stops at Amalfi and Positano for about two hours each. We made our booking through Tours & More:
Deb and I took the Circumvesuviana train to Naples one day to get a tour with Riccardo. It was very crowded until a bunch of people got off at the Pompeii stop. We also took this train back to Napoli Centrale when we left. Deb went up to the Milan area by train, and I left for Bari by bus. The bus station is right next to Napoli Centrale.
Besides spending at least a few days on Ischia, here are some of the things I missed that I hope to do in the future:
Hike Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods) on the Amalfi Coast from Bomerano to Nocelle.
Napoli Sotterranea:
Naples Museum of Archeology:
Pompeii - You need two days to get the full monty
Herculeneum (Ercolano)
NOTES:
I brought two cell phones and got a TIM sim card for one when I got to Italy. It cost 30 euros for one month. I used it as a hot spot sometimes so that I could check email etc on my USA phone. I recommend this and downloading WhatsApp if you don't already have it. It's widely used in Italy for texting.
I used Google maps extensively for checking train schedules. Make sure to change the time/date a the top if you are wanting an earlier start on a different day. I mainly used regional trains because they are very inexpensive. I didn't buy tickets ahead of time, I waited until I got to the station and bought them from the machines. Make sure you validate your ticket before boarding.
There are lots of places where you will have to pay with cash. This is difficult for me because I prefer to use credit cards and don't like to carry a lot of cash.
You will often be charged a coperto (cover charge) of a few euros per person at restaurants and cafes. Make sure and check the menu.
HAPPY TRAILS!
Becky the Beanster
MUST SEE!!! Sorrento Italy; the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria
Sorrento is an amazing place and definitely a must see destination.
I highly recommend staying at the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria, a luxiruous 5 star hotel in the Heart of Sorrento. It is the oldest and most prestigious hotel in Sorrento with a 180 years of history and still contain the historic furnishings. They have been host to many of the rich and famous, such as Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, Richard Wagner and Enrico Caruso. Their most famous suites, the Caruso suite, was named after the famous singer.
They offer 84 rooms and suites and every single one amazing. They offer 2 of the best restaurants in Sorrento as well as a large 20000 sqm garden. Which makes it hard to believe that you are in the middle of town.
Their terrace is where you will find the most spectacular sunsets in town while enjoying a cocktail. Enjoy their spa and try to make time for their pool and try one of the best oven baked pizzas in the city.
Their staff is one of the most amazing I have ever encountered, most have been there forever, such as their concierge, Antonito, who has been there for 45 years and his father before him. I would say he is the number 1 concierge in the world!!!
The most amazing sight you will ever see is arriving by sea. It was absolutely breath taking!!! Make sure to add this to your bucket list, you won’t regret it!

There are a LOT of things to do in Naples, Italy besides eating pizza: castles, cathedrals, cool neighborhoods, a palace, and underground tunnels! This video will show you everything to do in Naples before and after you eat pizza, including all the other food you should eat (yeah, turns out Naples has the best gelato we’ve ever eaten, too).

Trip to Amalfi Italy
Places visited:
Amalfi
Town in Italy
Amalfi is a town in a dramatic natural setting below steep cliffs on Italy’s southwest coast. Between the 9th and 11th centuries, it was the seat of a powerful maritime republic. The Arab-Norman cathedral at the heart of town, with its striped Byzantine facade, survives from this era. The Museo Arsenale Amalfi is a medieval shipyard-turned-exhibition space.
Positano
Village in Italy
Positano is a cliffside village on southern Italy's Amalfi Coast. It's a well-known holiday destination with a pebble beachfront and steep, narrow streets lined with boutiques and cafes. Its Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta features a majolica-tiled dome and a 13th-century Byzantine icon of the Virgin Mary. The Sentiero degli Dei hiking trail links Positano to other coastal towns.
Capri
Island in Italy
Capri, an island in Italy’s Gulf of Naples, is famed for its rugged landscape, upscale beach resorts and high-end shops selling handmade leather sandals and signature limoncello liqueur. One of its best-known natural sites is the Blue Grotto, a dark cavern where the sea glows electric blue, the result of sunlight passing through an underwater cave.
Ravello
Town in Italy
Ravello, a resort town set 365 meters above the Tyrrhenian Sea by Italy’s Amalfi Coast, is home to iconic cliffside gardens. The 13th-century, Moorish-style Villa Rufolo offers far-reaching views from its terraced gardens, and hosts indoor and outdoor concerts during the popular summertime Ravello Festival. Villa Cimbrone, a medieval-style estate perched on a steep outcrop, is surrounded by another celebrated garden.
Sorrento
Town in Italy
Sorrento is a coastal town in southwestern Italy, facing the Bay of Naples on the Sorrentine Peninsula. Perched atop cliffs that separate the town from its busy marinas, it’s known for sweeping views and Piazza Tasso, a cafe-lined square. The historic center is a warren of narrow alleys that includes the Chiesa di San Francesco, a 14th-century church with a tranquil cloister.
