Museum of Independence - Xth Pavilion of the Citadel Warsaw
The Museum of the Tenth Pavilion of the Citadel of Warsaw it is one of the most important places of Polish martyrdom presenting the fate of the prisoners staying here during the Russian partition.
The permanent exhibition created by New Amsterdam uses the play of lights and shadows to bring out moving narration from this location, and the original austerity of the interiors preserved. Invitation - The Royal Castle in Warsaw - Museum
The Royal Castle in Warsaw is a monument to Polish history and culture. It was once the seat of the Mazovian Dukes and then, until the loss of independence in 1795, a royal residence and the seat of the Sejm of the so-called Polish Commonwealth of Two Nations (i.e. Poland and Lithuania). In 1926-39 the President of the Polish Republic, which regained its independence in 1918, lived there.
Currently the Royal Castle is a museum which open to the general public, and a venue for important State events.
The Castle was destroyed in 1939-1944 on Hitler's orders by Germans and rebuilt between 1971 and 1984 due to the resolve of the Polish nation.
Director of the Royal Castle in Warsawa - Museum, prof. Wojciech Fałkowski invites to visit this unique place.

POLIN Museums exhibition In King Matt’s Poland. The 100th Anniversary of Regaining Independence
How should we arrange the state so that all its citizens are content? Is it easy to govern a state? These are the questions posed by Matt, protagonist of the book King Matt the First by Janusz Korczak.
We invite children and adults to a meeting with the 10-year old king, which will surely prove to be an unforgettable adventure. Together, we will seek answers to the questions concerning the labour of governing a state. Thanks to fairy tale-like illustrations by Iwona Chmielewska, we will enter the world of Korczak’s novel. We will “put on the shoes” of the little king who has to take the throne and arrange anew a war-torn country, experiencing various trials and tribulations in the process.
On the 100th anniversary of Poland regaining independence we wish to help children understand the role of citizens in building a state, and to make them realise that they too can make an impact. That is why an attractive space of creative action awaits our visitors. Thanks to numerous games and activities that stimulate imagination—a voting machine, a kaleidoscope or scales to weigh a state budget—we will ponder questions such as: what is power, is it ok to share it, what are reforms about, how much they cost and do they always prove effective?
In the last section of the exhibition we give the floor to children. Artist Iza Rutkowska invited them to talk about who looks after the state, and created a unique installation with them.
The exhibition In King Matt’s Poland: the 100th Anniversary of Regaining Independence deals with issues that are most vital and concern each and one of us. It provides a space for intergenerational debate, individual discoveries and for gaining experience through action.

Museum of Pavilion X in the Warsaw Citadel
The Citadel is an impressive 19th century fortress, and one of the best-preserved buildings of defensive architecture in Poland. In addition to the barracks, the Citadel site housed the central investigative prison for political prisoners (in the X Pavilion), such as Romuald Traugutt and Józef Piłsudski. The Warsaw Citadel is one of the most important 'martyr museums' in Poland. The exhibitions illustrate the history of the Polish struggle for national liberation and social changes in the era of partition by presenting profiles of people who had been incarcerated there, events and organizations in which they were active participants; the timeline ranges from the plots for independence in the 1830's to the country's independence gained in 1918.

Warsaw Pawiak - notorious WW2 prison where Germans tortured Polish patriots with Benjamin Lee
Following the 1939 German invasion of Poland, the Pawiak Prison became a German Gestapo prison, then part of the Nazi concentration – death-camp system. Approximately 100,000 men and 200,000 women passed through the prison, mostly Home Army members, political prisoners, and civilians taken hostage in street round-ups. An estimated 37,000 inmates were executed and 60,000 sent to German death and concentration camps. Exact numbers are unknown, as the prison archives were never found.
During the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, the Pawiak Prison became a German assault base. Pawiak jailers, commanded by Franz Bürkl, volunteered to hunt the Jews.
On 19 July 1944 a Ukrainian Wachmeister (guard) Petrenko and some prisoners attempted a mass jailbreak, supported by an attack from outside, but failed. Petrenko and several others committed suicide. The resistance attack detachment was ambushed and practically annihilated. Next day, in reprisal, the Germans executed over 380 prisoners. As Julien Hirshaut convincingly argues in Jewish Martyrs of Pawiak, it is inconceivable that the prison-escape attempt was a Gestapo-initiated provocation. The Polish underground had approved the plan but backed out without being able to alert those in the prison that the plan was cancelled.
The final transport of prisoners took place 30 July 1944, two days before the 1 August outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising. Two thousand men and the remaining 400 women were sent to Gross-Rosen and Ravensbrück. Subsequently the Polish insurgents captured the area but lost it to German forces. On 21 August 1944 the Germans shot an unknown number of remaining prisoners and burned and blew up the buildings.
After World War II, the buildings were not rebuilt. Half of the gateway and three detention cells survive. Since 1990 a surviving basement has housed a museum which, with the Mausoleum of Struggle and Martyrdom, forms the Museum of Independence.
