20 YEAR INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATIONS SILENT ON AZERBAIJAN BEFORE HEYDAR ALIYEV
Today, an exhibition called '20 years on independence road' was held in Sahil Park, in the center of Baku. School children and families gathered to hear music, surrounded by enormous portraits of Heydar Aliyev, which some people felt overshadowed the rest of the exhibition, designed to celebrate Azerbaijani culture.
The independence scene of the exhibition began with a section called National Leader Heydar Aliyev, and continues with the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and then the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. None of the books displayed, including national history texts, encyclopedias, and works of religion, and philosophy included any information of early presidents of Azerbaijan Ayaz Mutallibov and Abulfaz Elchibay, or the first years of independence (1991-1993).
Our 3rd years have attended Uzeyir Hajibeyli's home museum.
Uzeyir Hajibeyli was an Azerbaijani composer, conductor, publicist, playwright, teacher, translator, and social figure from Azerbaijan. He is recognized as the father of Azerbaijani composed classical music and opera. Uzeyir Hajibeyli composed the music of the national anthem of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (which was re-adopted after Azerbaijan regained its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991). He also composed the anthem used by Azerbaijan during the Soviet period. He was the first composer of an opera in the Islamic world.

Baku celebrated Republic Day with fireworks and festivities | Big in Baku
Baku came out to celebrate Republic Day with fireworks and festivities on the city’s iconic Bulvar.
On 28 May 1918, Azerbaijan declared independence, becoming the first democratic republic in the Muslim world. The holiday has been observed every year since the country regained its independence following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
This year, the celebrations were even more special than usual, coming just 15 days before the start of the Baku 2015 European Games.

Zaha Hadid Architects | Heydar Aliyev Centre
As part of the former Soviet Union, the urbanism and architecture of Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan on the Western coast of the Caspian Sea, was heavily influenced by the planning of that era. Since its independence in 1991, Azerbaijan has invested heavily in modernising and developing Baku's infrastructure and architecture, departing from its legacy of normative Soviet Modernism.
Zaha Hadid Architects was appointed as design architects of the Heydar Aliyev Center following a competition in 2007. The Center, designed to become the primary building for the nation's cultural programs, breaks from the rigid and often monumental Soviet architecture that is so prevalent in Baku, aspiring instead to express the sensibilities of Azeri culture and the optimism of a nation that looks to the future.

Vladimir Putin comments on Armenian history
For more information please read the Treaty of Turkmenchay of 1828 and Treaty of Gulistan of 1813:
In November 10, 1724 Peter I the Great send general M.Matyuskin and brigadier Levasev to Baku to arange the settlement and transfer of ethnic Armenians to Baku, Derbend, Shirvan, Salyan and Iranian Gilan and Mazandaran.
This arrangement was changed and fullfilled in February 29, 1828 with the Treaty of Turkmenchay when general Paskevich and S.A.Qriboyedov started the settlement of Armenians into Azerbaijani regions such as Nakhchivan, Erivan and Karabakh.
By 1832 only half of the total population of the Erivan Khanate remained Azerbaijani. Only 5 years after the creation of the Armenian Oblast.
In 1850 the Armenian Oblast was reorganized into a governorate of the Russian Empire. The countless massacres of Azerbaijanis by Armenians with the aid of Russians continued and by 1897 only 37% of the Erivan Governorate remained Azerbaijani.
The first clashes between the Armenians and Azeris took place in Baku in February 1905. The conflict spread over to the other Azerbaijani Khanates in the same year.
When both Azerbaijan and Armenia declared independence, tensions grew and the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict ignited in Baku when Armenia claimed almost all Azerbaijani lands as part of the Armenian Republic. The Armenian Republic was also involved with a war with the Georgian Republic.
Early in March 1918, in just 3 days, over 15,000 Azerbaijanis were massacred in Baku alone by Armenian and Bolsheviks (Communist Russian) units led by Stepan Shahumyan (Armenian Communist). According to some experts the exact number of massacred Azerbaijanis is still uncertain as it ranges from 15,000 to 20,000.
Later in 1923 the city of Khankendi in Karabakh was renamed to Stepanakert by the Soviet Union, to honor Stepan Shahumyan for his Massive March Massacre in Baku.
Other regions with ethnic Azerbaijani population suffered aswell, over 70,000 Azerbaijanis were massacred in Nakhchivan alone. More then 30,000 Azerbaijanis were massacred in Karabakh. Over 4,000 Azerbaijani-Jews were massacred in Guba.
During the short independence of Azerbaijan, the state was mainly busy with defense against Armenian and Russian invasion and massacres. After liberation by the Ottoman army, rebuilding, governmental and cultural reforms became the priority of the Azerbaijani state. It was the first democratic and secular republic in the Muslim world. Not to mention it was amongst the first countries in the world to adopt suffrage to women. Azerbaijan preceded even such developed countries as the United Kingdom and the United States.
Stalin was put in charge of the Soviet Caucasus Plan by Vladimir Lenin. In order to calm the region down, Stalin compensated several Azerbaijani regions to Armenia.
Today this conflict continues as Armenia occupies about 20% of Azerbaijan, which resulted in the displacement of one million Azerbaijanis. What else can you call two centuries of persecution, annexations and massacres except GENOCIDE.
Flags of Azerbaijan Republic since 1918
The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR; Azerbaijani: Azərbaycan Xalq Cümhuriyyəti) was the first successful attempt to establish a democratic and secular republic in the Muslim world. The ADR was founded on May 28, 1918 after the collapse of the Russian Empire that began with the Russian Revolution of 1917 by Azerbaijani National Council in Tiflis.
Following the occupation of ADR by the Soviet Russia, the second Republic was established in Azerbaijan, entitled the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialistic Republic, which lasted till 1990.
In 1991 Azerbaijan regained its independence and declared the third Azerbaijan Republic.
The video shows the official flags adopted during this periods.
Mostly the changes on the flags are caused by alphabet adoptions.
The Arabic script was introduced to the Azerbaijan region in the 7th century and continued to be used to write Azerbaijani until the 1920s. Three different versions of the Arabic script were used during this period: the 28-letter Arabic script, the 32-letter Perso-Arabic script and the 33-letter Turkic Arabic script. None of these was ideal for writing Azerbaijani and various reforms were proposed, particularly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
From the 19th century there were efforts by some intellectuals like Mirza Fatali Akhundov to replace the Arabic alphabet and create a Latin script for Azeri. In 1922, a Latin script was created by Yeni türk əlifba komitəsi (New Turkish Alphabet Committee; Јени түрк əлифба комитəси) in Baku. In 1929, the Uniform Turkic Alphabet was introduced to replace the varieties of the Arabic alphabet in use at the time. In 1939, because Stalin wished to sever the ties between the Republic of Turkey and the Turkic peoples living within the Soviet Union, he decreed that only the Cyrillic alphabet be used[. When the Soviet Union collapsed and Azerbaijan gained its independence, one of the first laws passed in the new Parliament was the adoption of a modified Latin alphabet.

May 24, 2017 - On the occassion of the 99th anniversary of the establishment of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR), the Consulate General of Azerbaijan in Los Angeles hosted a reception on May 23, 2017, at the prestigious Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles.
The well-attended reception included officials of the U.S. State Department, representatives of the Los Angeles County and City, Los Angeles Police Department, consuls general and honorary consuls of many different countries, professors of various Californian universities, journalists, as well as members of Azerbaijani, Turkish, Jewish, Korean, Hispanic, Iranian and other communities.

The Consul General noted that this important event played a crucial role in strengthening of national statehood traditions of the Azerbaijani people. Speaking of Azerbaijan’s development as a free nation since the restoration of its independence in 1991, the Consul General stressed that the goal-oriented political, economic and social policies under President Ilham Aliyev’s leadership have turned Azerbaijan into a center of prosperity and stability in a challenging region, and a regional mega-hub for energy, trade, transportation and education. Aghayev also noted that “Azerbaijan is proud to be called an exemplary model of multiculturalism and interfaith harmony creating an inclusive environment where Muslims, Christians and Jews continue to live side by side in peace and dignity.”
Then Bishop Juan Carlos Mendez, the founder of the prominent “Churches in Action” and the leader of the Los Angeles Interfaith Council, presented a certificate of commendation to the Consul General. He was joined by Dr. Jannah Scott, former Deputy Director at the Center of the White House Office of Faith-based & Neighborhood Partnerships, and other members of the Los Angeles Interfaith Council. Bishop Mendez and Dr. Scott hailed Azerbaijan’s model of interfaith harmony and multiculturalism.
The event also featured three diplomats of Azerbaijan’s Consulate General in Los Angeles, whose 4-year tenure is about to expire soon and who will be returning to Azerbaijan. The diplomats were presented with gifts on behalf of the Consulate General in honor of their dedicated diplomatic service.

An Islamic revival in Azerbaijan: The Road to Hajj | Featured Documentary
It is an ancient land at the crossroads of Europe and Central Asia and is said to have been the location of the Garden of Eden. Different cultures and civilisations have met in Azerbaijan for thousands of years and the country was one of the first to embrace Islam when Arabian invaders imposed their religion on the region in the seventh century.
But when Azerbaijan fell under the control of the former Soviet Union in 1920, atheism became state policy; many Muslim leaders were exiled or killed and mosques were closed down or destroyed.
When the country regained its independence in 1991, many embarked on a journey to rediscover their faith and heritage and to fill the religious vacuum left by Communist rule.
Thirty-one-year-old Salamova Samira is a mother of two and part of the 95 per cent of Azerbaijanis who consider themselves Muslims. But, more significantly, she is one of only five per cent who actually practice their faith and is about to embark on the Hajj pilgrimage.
I started praying when I was around 12 years old. There was only grandma [Samira's great-grandmother] who prayed in our family. She was 115 years old. She read the Quran, Samira says.
When I was a schoolgirl, I also took lessons to learn the Quran. This was difficult then as many people viewed Islam in a bad light, unlike today.
The older generation, like Samira's mother, lived their lives without observing the central tenets of their religion and, more often than not, do not feel any need to start doing it now.
Samira will travel from Baku, the country's capital where she lives, to Mecca in Saudi Arabia for the Hajj. But, for her, the road to Hajj has been a long one marked by pain and hardship.
I had been praying until I turned 17. Then I got married and stopped praying. Having a family with children, I just could not find the time.
My husband was a Muslim too. He was not against the fact that I prayed regularly. But I just could not do it. I have two daughters, aged 11 and 13 years old, she explains.
Her relationship with her husband soured and after five years of marriage they divorced.
As the saying goes, when the world knocks you down on your knees, you are in the perfect position to pray, she says.
Performing the pilgrimage seemed like an impossible dream for Samira.
Although she earns a decent living as a house-keeping manager at a hotel, she knew it would take her years to save enough money to go on Hajj.
Going to the Hajj was my dream. But with my salary, it was not possible. I always thought it would take a miracle for me to go, she says.
But fate was to intervene for Samira when a friend of her mother offered to sponsor her pilgrimage.
