Sewee Shell Mound Ring Trail Prehistoric Native Americans SC
The Sewee shell mound trail is a loop which will lead you to a 4,000-year old Prehistoric Native American shell ring, and an 800-year old clamshell mound. This is one of the oldest, most northern shell rings in the United States. Reaching 3-10 feet above the nearby marshland, and about 220 feet across, the ring was built 4,000 years ago by the fishing and hunting Indians of Thom's Creek, South Carolina, USA.
The closest town is Awendaw, South Carolina. This is 30 minutes North East of Charleston, South Carolina just off of Hwy 17 in the Francis Marion National Forest.

Shell Rings Archaeology
There is a place on the coast of South Carolina where some seemingly natural islands mark some of man's earliest settlements. Here within these large circular mounds made largely of oyster shells, people would gather seasonally for family visits, feasting and ceremonies. And the story of their lives is all there in the well-preserved layers of shell they left behind.
