Aero-TV: The Ninety-Nines - Inspiring Women Pilots Since 1929
The First Women's Flying Organization Has Plenty of Life Left In It
While Peggy Chabrian's amazing work with the Women in Aviation organization has helped to popularize the role of the better sex (as Vicki used to remind me, persistently, to describe them), it was the Ninety-Nines that first put women and aviation together in the public eye.
The Ninety-Nines is the international organization of women pilots that promotes advancement of aviation through education, scholarships, and mutual support while honoring their unique history and sharing their passion for flight. Established in 1929 by 99 women pilots, the members of The Ninety-Nines, Inc., International Organization of Women Pilots, are represented in all areas of aviation today. The Ninety-Nines, Inc., boasts licensed women pilot/members from 35 countries - and the organization notes that it has thousands of members throughout the world. They are a non-profit, charitable membership corporation holding 501(c)(3) U.S. tax status. International HQ is located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and while there are other female pilot organizations in various states and nations, virtually all women of achievement in aviation have been or are members of The Ninety-Nines.
The organization came into being November 2, 1929, at Curtiss Field, Valley Stream, Long Island, New York. All 117 American female pilots had been invited to assemble for mutual support and the advancement of aviation. Louise Thaden was elected secretary and worked tirelessly to keep the group together as we struggled to organize and grow until 1931, when Amelia Earhart was elected as first president and the group was named for the 99 charter members.

Birthplace of a Whirlwind: The 1960 Sit-ins
Of Songs, Peace, and Struggle: Birthplace of a Whirlwind program was held at the National Museum of American History on January 14, 1995.
The program for the commemoration of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “Of Songs, Peace, and Struggle: Birthplace of a Whirlwind: The 1960 Greensboro Sit-Ins” took place at the National Museum of American History in the Warner Bros. Theater. The Program was organized by the Program in African American Culture and featured an address by Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee founder Diane Nash and a roundtable discussion with three of the four original sit-in demonstrators in Greensboro, North Carolina. Jibreel A-A. K-A. Khazan (Ezell A. Blair, Jr.), Franklin E. McCain, and Joseph L. McNeil were all students at North Carolina A&T State University in 1960 when they sat down at a lunch counter to protest segregation and spurred mass student-led sit-ins across the South. After the roundtable discussion there was a question and answer period and further discussion, followed by a song workshop featuring the Program in African American Culture’s Community Choir, led by Diane Nash. The program concluded with a tour of “Sitting for Justice: The Greensboro Sit-In of 1960”, which featured the Woolworth lunch counter that was the site of the demonstration, and other objects related to social change in America.

Cruise Ship Dress Codes Formal Night Yesterday and Today Oh How Things Have Changed
Cruise Ship Dress Codes Formal Night Yesterday and Today Oh How Things Have Changed. Formal night on a cruise ship is not what it used to be. There was a time when dinner on a cruise was a formal affair every night. Tuxedos for men were a must and a different evening gown was worn by women every evening. Kids were expected to honor their families reputation with their behaviour at dinner time and so the best manners were on display. Today? Sorry, men are wearing shorts to the main dinning room these days. Women still out class the guys, but not by much. To find a well dressed couple on a cruise is getting harder to find.

Thorium.
Thorium is an abundant material which can be transformed into massive quantities of energy. To do so efficiently requires a very different nuclear reactor than the kind we use today- Not one that uses solid fuel rods, but a reactor in which the fuel is kept in a liquid state. Not one that uses pressurized water as a coolant, but a reactor that uses chemically stable molten salts.
Such a reactor is called a Molten Salt Reactor. Many different configurations are possible. Some of these configurations can harness Thorium very efficiently.
This video explores the attributes of Molten Salt Reactors. Why are they compelling? And why do many people (including myself) see them as the only economical way of fully harnessing ALL our nuclear fuels... including Thorium.
This video has been under development since 2012. I hope it conveys to you why I personally find Molten Salt Reactors so compelling, as do the many volunteers and supporters who helped create it. Much of the footage was shot by volunteers.

Apollo Guidance Computer, MIT History Project Conference pt.3 - 2001
The Apollo Guidance Computer Project brought together engineers, scientists, astronauts and administrators who worked on the AGC for a program of four conferences at MIT, held in 2001 and 2002. The program fit within a larger project called the History of Recent Science and Technology on the WorldWideWeb, funded by the Sloan Foundation and the Dibner Foundation. The overall idea as expressed by organizer Prof. David Mindell was to investigate how best to use the WWW as a medium for collecting histories of participants for science and technology projects.
The third conference (shown here), held on November 30, 2001, centered on manufacturing and mechanical design. Participants included Alexander (Sandy) Brown, David Mindell, Cline Frasier, Bard Turner, Dave Bates, Jack Poundstone, Ed Blondin ‘51, Hugh Blair-Smith, Herb Briss, Eldon C. Hall, Dave Hanley ‘SM ‘57 and Ed Duggan.

Ep. 510 Mississippi Melodies - Tennessee Valley Uncharted
Aerial heads down to Clarksdale, Mississippi, hoping to shine a spotlight on the innovators and artists that have impacted the music of America. Her first stop is the Devil’s Crossroads, where according to legend, musician Robert Johnson sold his soul in exchange for mastery of the guitar. A local sits with her at Hopson Commissary to give her the lowdown on the infamous tale, as well as other forgotten stories that surround the area. Then, it’s all music and dancing at the Deep Blues Festival. Aerial visits both the Ground Zero Blues Club and the New Roxy to talk to the owners of these remarkable venues about what blues music means to the city. Afterward, she stops into Deak’s Mississippi Saxophones and Blues Emporium, where she meets owner Deak Harp. Not only does she learn how he got into playing the harmonica and how he keeps the craft alive by offering repairs to the instrument, but she also gets to hear a performance! Next, Aerial relives her student days by visiting Quitman County Middle School, where she helps the manager of the TVA Science Kids World Water Monitoring Program collect samples for a lab that she then gets to participate in during class. There, she discovers why it’s important for kids to learn about their local water sources, and to get handson experience with scientific experiments. Before she concludes her trip to Mississippi, Aerial meets up with the owner of the Shack Up Inn, a collection of sharecropper shacks that are as historically prominent as they are comfortable.

The 58th Presidential Inauguration of Donald J. Trump (Full Video) | NBC News
Thomas Woltz, “Threatened Landscapes: Designed Countermeasures of N. B. W. Landscape Architects”
Public parks are a source of civic identity for the communities they serve – inclusivity and authenticity are crucial. Similarly, memorials are bastions of democratic exchange and act as repositories of our cultural past and evolution. Thomas Woltz will present projects from the portfolio of Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects (NBW) that demonstrate the power of the firm’s research-based design to reframe our relationship with civic, ecological, and cultural systems within the public realm. Lastly, Thomas will present NBW projects that prioritize the ecological health and resilience in agriculturally productive landscapes and reveal surprising connections between these typologies.
Over the past two decades of practice, landscape architect Thomas Woltz has forged a body of work that integrates the beauty and function of built forms with an understanding of complex biological systems and restoration ecology. As principal of Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects (NBW), a 45-person firm based in Charlottesville, Virginia and New York City, Woltz has infused narratives of the land into the places where people live, work and play, deepening the public’s enjoyment of the natural world and inspiring environmental stewardship. NBW projects create models of biodiversity and sustainable agriculture within areas of damaged ecological infrastructure and working farmland, yielding hundreds of acres of reconstructed wetlands, reforested land, and flourishing wildlife habitat.
Presently, Thomas and NBW are entrusted with the design of major public parks across the United States, Canada and New Zealand, they include Memorial Park in Houston, Hudson Yards in New York City, NoMA Green in Washington DC, Cornwall Park in Auckland, the Aga Khan Garden in Alberta, Canada, and three parks in Nashville, including Centennial Park.
In 2013 was named Design Innovator of the Year by the Wall Street Journal magazine and in 2017 Fast Company named Woltz one of the most creative people in business.
