Somewhere in Time - Trailer
Somewhere in Time is the story of a young writer who sacrifices his life in the present to find happiness in the past, where true love awaits him. Young Richard Collier (Christopher Reeve) is approached by an elderly woman who gives him an antique gold watch and who pleads with him to return in time with her. Years later, Richard Collier is overwhelmed by a photograph of a beautiful young woman (Jane Seymour). Another picture of this woman in her later years reveals to him that she is the same woman who had given him the gold watch. Collier then becomes obsessed with returning to 1912 and the beautiful young woman who awaits him there.
2017 Michigan Trip: Visiting the Grand Hotel at Mackinac Island, Michigan - Upper Peninsula
While on our trip to Michigan and the Upper Peninsula, we took a ride from Muskallonge State Park over to St Ignace. From there we caught a ferry for a ride over to Mackinac (pronounced Mackinaw) Island. You may remember some of the scenery if you ever saw the 1980 movie Somewhere in Time with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. There is a lot to see on the island. Lot of shops and restaurants. The best way to get around is by bicycle. You can bring your own or rent one on the island. There are also horse drawn carriages that you can rent. There are no motorized vehicles on the island. Be sure to stop by one of the many fudge shops and become a fudgie. Fudgie's are what they call tourists because they buy and eat a lot of fudge.

Mackinac Weddings
Mackinac is a vista for romance, and it's not hard to see why. This is a landscape characterized by high limestone bluffs (Mackinac Island), beautiful bodies of sparking water, vibrant forests, and mystical geological formations. Elegant hotels, fine restaurants, and even horse and buggy transportation (Mackinac Island) further enhance this romantic atmosphere. It's not surprising that the classic romance Somewhere in Time was filmed in this region.
Mackinac Island Vlog
In June 2018, I was invited to travel to Mackinac Island and stay at Mission Point Resort. Mackinac Island is between Michigan’s Upper and Lower peninsulas. Get this, no cars are allowed on the island! You can only get around by walking, biking, or by horse. It almost feels like you're traveling back in time. It's a super popular summer spot, and definitely a relaxing and unique place to travel to.

Mackinac Island
Mackinac Island (/ˈmækɨnɔː/ MAK-in-aw) is an island and resort area, covering 3.8 square miles (9.8 km2) in land area, in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is located in Lake Huron, at the eastern end of the Straits of Mackinac, between the state's Upper and Lower Peninsulas. The island was home to a Native American settlement before European exploration began in the 17th century. It served a strategic position amidst the commerce of the Great Lakes fur trade. This led to the establishment of Fort Mackinac on the island by the British during the American Revolutionary War. It was the site of two battles during the War of 1812.
In the late 19th century, Mackinac Island became a popular tourist attraction and summer colony. Much of the island has undergone extensive historical preservation and restoration; as a result, the entire island is listed as a National Historic Landmark. It is well known for its numerous cultural events; its wide variety of architectural styles, including the famous Victorian Grand Hotel; its fudge; and its ban on almost all motor vehicles. More than 80 percent of the island is preserved as Mackinac Island State Park.

Michigan from Detroit to Mackinac Island (part 1 of 4)

Join World Footprints as we explore the Great Lakes State of Michigan and travel from Mackinac City to Detroit.
Our audio tour will start with a visit to the Michigan Historical Center and Museum in Lansing where we will offer a flavor of every place in the State between the lower and upper peninsula. Museum director Linda Endersby and Michigan History Foundation director Cindy Hales will help us learn about the stories of the people who helped shape Michigan.
Then, one of Michigan's crown jewels is Mackinac Island--Tonya's childhood playground. Since the late 19th century, the island's Grand Hotel has welcomed celebrities, Presidents and other visitors from around the world. The Grand Hotel offers the world's longest porch and has been the setting of several movies, including Somewhere In Time with Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeve. Hotel historian and concierge, Bob Tagetz, will take us inside the rich history and traditions of this iconic hotel.
Finally, we will share the legacy of a family deeply intertwined in the history of Michigan and Mackinac Island--the Shepler family--the namesake behind Shepler's Mackinac Island Ferry. This multi-generational family enterprise has transported legions to and from Mackinac Island between Mackinaw City and St. Ignace. Chris Shepler will share his family's legacy, their passion for customer service, philanthropy and he'll give Tonya a new experience as Captain.
Visit and connect with World Footprints for the best travel information to any destination. Let us inspire you.

Visiting Mackinaw City Michigan and The Mackinac Bridge
Today, we are visiting Mackinaw City Michigan and the Mackinac Bridge. Mackinaw City is located in northern Michigan. The highlight of Mackinaw City is the Mackinac Bridge which spans the gap between the lower peninsula of Michigan and the upper peninsula of Michigan.
It had been at least 25 years since I last stepped foot in Mackinaw City and boy has a lot changed. The very first thing I noticed that was different is a cool shopping district called the Mackinaw Crossings has been built. This little shopping area reminds me of the River Crossings in Frankenmuth, Michigan, but with a few more things to do. In fact, I believe it was built by the same developers.
After checking out the Mackinaw Crossings we decided to walk through downtown Mackinaw City and head out toward Lake Huron to check out some of the shoreline. The Lake Huron water is absolutely gorgeous. I was surprised at how clear and clean the lake looked.
After spending some time on Lake Huron we decided it was time to go and see the main attraction in Mackinaw City, the Mackinac Bridge. We visited both the lower peninsula and the upper peninsula sides to catch a good look at the bridge and the surrounding water.
Finally, at night I went back to the bridge to see it all lit up at night. While it was hard to see in the dark, what I could see was beautiful.
In conclusion, I think Mackinaw City is pretty fun place to visit. It reminds me of a cross between Gatlinburg, Tennessee and Frankenmuth, Michigan. I do think, however, that some of the areas around Mackinaw are a little dated and could use some work.

Wings of Mackinac - Butterfly Conservatory - Mackinac Island, Michigan.
My family and I made a trip up to Michigan to the Mackinac Island area to see the area and what it had to offer. It is a very nice area up there and very scenic! This Butterfly Conservatory in on Mackinac Island in which you have to take a Ferry over to see. The only thing on the Island used as transportation are bicycles and horses and we took a Horse Carriage Tour around the Island to see its beauty. I'll have more footage of the Island in another video soon..
Here is a little about the Butterfly Conservatory and their website:
It is an all-glass Conservatory with its beautiful lush plants surrounded by hundreds of butterflies, dancing around you to gentle instrumental music.
Enjoy observing these fascinating creatures as they fly within our specially designed butterfly greenhouse. Knowledgeable curators and colorful exhibits teach you about the metamorphosis from egg to larvae (caterpillar) to pupa (chrysalis) and finally to the adult butterfly.

Dr. Howard Tanner discusses Something Spectacular: My Great Lakes Salmon Story
It would be hard to understate the impact that Dr. Howard A. Tanner had on the Great Lakes region. Tanner was at the helm of the Michigan Department of Conservation’s Fish Division from 1964 until 1966. During this brief moment in time, Tanner set the course for massive change. Ultimately, his decisions were largely responsible for not only the introduction of coho and chinook salmon, but also the shift in emphasis from commercial to recreational fisheries management on the lakes, the rise of state authority and decline of federal authority to manage these fisheries, massive changes to state hatchery systems, and the beginning of state involvement in Great Lakes fishery research. Dr. Tanner discusses his new book and his role during a talk hosted by Michigan Sea Grant at Michigan State University on Great Lakes Day on March 5, 2019. Read Dr. Dan O'Keefe's review of Tanner's book at
