TURKEY: EXPLORING scenic KONAK SQUARE in the centre of IZMIR (SMYRNA, SMYRNI) ⛲
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go visit the very scenic Konak Square which is a busy square at the southern end of Atatürk Avenue in the Konak district of İzmir, Turkey. The square is the busiest part of the city, as Konak is the main place of İzmir. The square is named after the Vali Konağı (Governor's Mansion) of İzmir Province, which is located here (konak means mansion in Turkish.)
Most of this busy square is occupied by the Governorate (Governor's Konak) of İzmir Province, the City Hall of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality and the Yalı Mosque. At the center of the square is the İzmir Clock Tower, an old landmark built in 1901. The square is also near Kemeraltı, İzmir's major market (bazaar) district. At the southern end of the square is the Cultural Centre of Ege University, which includes an opera house, a music academy, and a museum of modern art.
Izmir is a city on Turkey’s Aegean coast. Known as Smyrna in antiquity, it was founded by the Greeks, taken over by the Romans and rebuilt by Alexander the Great before becoming part of the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century. Today, its expansive archaeological sites include the Roman Agora of Smyrna, now an open-air museum. The hilltop Kadifekale, or Velvet Castle, built during Alexander’s reign, overlooks the city.
Turkey is a nation straddling eastern Europe and western Asia with cultural connections to ancient Greek, Persian, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires. Cosmopolitan Istanbul, on the Bosphorus Strait, is home to the iconic Hagia Sophia, with its soaring dome and Christian mosaics, the massive 17th-century Blue Mosque and the circa-1460 Topkapı Palace, former home of sultans. Ankara is Turkey’s modern capital.

İzmir is a city in the western extremity of Anatolia and the third most populous city in Turkey, after Istanbul and Ankara.[1][2] İzmir's metropolitan area extends along the outlying waters of the Gulf of İzmir and inland to the north across Gediz River's of delta, to the east along an alluvial plain created by several small streams and to a slightly more rugged terrain in the south. The ancient city was known as Smyrna (Greek: Σμύρνη Smyrni), and the city was generally referred to as Smyrna in English, until the Turkish Postal Service Law of 28 March 1930 made İzmir the internationally recognized name.
The city of İzmir is composed of several metropolitan districts. Of these, Konak district corresponds to historical İzmir, this district's area having constituted the İzmir Municipality (Turkish: İzmir Belediyesi) area until 1984, Konak until then having been a name for a central neighborhood around Konak Square, still the core of the city. With the constitution of the Greater İzmir Metropolitan Municipality (Turkish: İzmir Büyükşehir Belediyesi), the city of İzmir became a compound bringing together initially nine, and more recently eleven metropolitan districts, namely Balçova, Bayraklı, Bornova, Buca, Çiğli, Gaziemir, Güzelbahçe, Karabağlar, Karşıyaka, Konak and Narlıdere. Almost all of these settlements are former district centers or neighborhoods which stood on their own, with their own distinct features and temperament. In an ongoing processus, the Mayor of İzmir was also vested with authority over the areas of additional districts reaching from Bergama in the north to Selçuk in the south, bringing the number of districts to be considered as being part of İzmir to twenty-one under the new arrangements, two of these having been administratively included in İzmir only partially.
In 2014, İzmir had a population of 2,847,691, while İzmir Province had a total of 4,113,072.

İzmir Travel Guide - Turkey Amazing Atmosphere
İzmir Travel Guide - Turkey Amazing Atmosphere
Izmir is the third largest city in Turkey with a population of around 4 million, the second biggest port after Istanbul, and a very good transport hub. The fact that almost half of its population of 4 million are under the age of 30, makes İzmir a city full of life. The city hosts tens of thousands of university students, educates scientists, artists, business leaders and academics. It is a rapidly growing city on the Central Aegean coast of Turkey.
Once the ancient city of Smyrna, İzmir is now a modern, developed, and busy commercial center, set around a huge bay and surrounded by mountains. The broad boulevards, glass-fronted buildings and modern shopping centers are dotted with traditional red-tiled roofs, the 18th century market, and old mosques and churches, although the city has an atmosphere more of Mediterranean Europe than traditional Turkey.
İzmir owes its position as an economically and socially dynamic city to its location, climate and the fact that it has been a home to many different cultures and religions. Persians, Ancient Greeks, Assyrians, Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans are just a few of the dozens of different civilizations that the city has hosted throughout its long history.
Due to its geographical location, similar climatic features are observed in almost every part of the province. Since the average number of sunny days reaches up to almost 300 a year, the solar potential is very high in İzmir.
Public ferries are easy, fast inside the coast and gives a nice shot of Izmir. Preferable to every other transportation in nice weather. Popular routes include; Konak-Karsiyaka, Alsancak-Karsiyaka, Konak-Bostanli and Karsiyaka-Goztepe. There is an extensive public bus system which covers all of the city. Many taxis with reasonable price. There is also a metro line connecting city centre/Konak Square with the northeastern suburb of Bornova.
Izmir is a member of World Gourmet Cities Network (DELICE), a network with 22 cities from different parts of the world. Became a member in 2015, Izmir is the 23rd city in the network. In Izmir there are many hotels which are suitable for all tastes and budgets. Hilton, Swissotel and Movenpick are just a few minutes away by foot from Cumhuriyet Meydani (Republic Square) Hotel Ibis is very close to the city center, located nearby Alsancak Railway Station. Also there is Crowne Plaza, which is about 30 min. from center.
Standing on Mount Yamanlar, the tomb of Tantalus was excavated by Charles Texier in 1835 and is an example of the historic traces in the region prior to the Hellenistic Age, along with those found in nearby Kemalpaşa and Mount Sipylus. The Agora of Smyrna is well preserved, and is arranged into the Agora Open Air Museum of İzmir, although important parts buried under modern buildings wait to be brought to light. Serious consideration is also being given to uncovering the ancient theatre of Smyrna where St. Polycarp was martyred, buried under an urban zone on the slopes of Kadifekale.
One of the more pronounced elements of İzmir's harbor is the Clock Tower, a marble tower in the middle of the Konak district, standing 25 m (82 ft) in height. It was designed by Levantine French architect Raymond Charles Père in 1901 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the ascension of Abdülhamid II to the Ottoman throne in 1876. The clock's workings were given as a gift by the German Kaiser Wilhelm II, a political ally of Abdülhamid II.

Turks Protest Islamist AKP in Karsiyaka, Izmir, Turkey
People in Karsiyaka, Izmir, have peacefully demonstrated against the Islamist AKP government's non-secular practices highlighted recently by attempting to change the Turkish Constitution to allow women to wear turban in public places such as universities.
Once this is accomplished, it is no secret that all government institutions will allow women to wear turban and even veil and burka. AKP parlimentarians have already publicly stated that they will allow girls in primary and secondary schools also wear the turban and veil.
It is widely believed that no women will escape the wrath of Islamist government and the self-declared mullahs and morality police will force people to follow strict Islamic sharia rules if AKP acts as it wishes.
The Karsiyaka protest started at the tomb of Zubeyde Hanim, mother of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, which is located in Karsiyaka, Izmir. Thousands then walked through the Karsiyaka Carsisi (downtown district) where shopkeepers supported the demonstration. The event, organized by Yurtsever Yurttaslar Platformu, gathered more than ten thousand participants.
The demonsatration ended at Karsiyaka's Constitution Square after several women gave speeches against non-secular practices of the ruling AKP government and its supporter MHP party, which switched its policy to support the sharia rule with the hopes that it will gain more votes. Such is the state of sad turn of events Turkey faces today.
Today people in Eskisehir in western Turkey also protested government's anti-secular actions. The event is organized by ADD (Ataturkcu Dusunce Dernegi) and CYDD (Cagdas Yasami Destekleme Dernegi), two progressive, indepent NGO groups in Turkey.
NGOs in Turkey have gathered under the umbrella organization of Ulusal Sivil Toplum Kuruluşları (STK or NGO) Birliği (Association of National NGOs) which includes the following organizations:

İzmir Konak Saat Kulesi | Konak Clock Tower | Izmir - Turkey
İzmir’in #Konak ilçesinde bulunur. Eserin adıyla aynı ismi taşıdığı söylenilir. II. Abdülhamit tahta çıktıktan sonra yapılmıştır. Tahta çıkışının 25. Yılında Sadrazam Mehmet Said Paşa tarafından yaptırılmıştır.
İzmir Saat Kulesi, İzmir’in Konak ilçesinde bulunur ve boyu 25 metre uzunluğundadır.
Sebillerin ortalarında fıskiye bulunur ve sebillerin kemerleri at nallıdır.
Saat Kulesi, İzmir’in Konak ilçesinde yer alır.

İZMİR KUTLAMALAR ŞENLİKLER İZMİR歡迎節日 İZMİR CELEBRATION FESTIVALS
The spectacular shows fireworks show breath yesterday again a very special day. It was both birthday and anniversary of the liberation of Izmir. I felt like I was born twice. :)
İzmir really does the celebration work very well. When Heleki entered the business in the last few years, the color of the job changed a little more and became more enjoyable and fun. You will be able to understand this clearly from these photographs which have already been taken by Cem Yaman.
Izmir Metropolitan Municipality brought together thousands of people from almost everywhere in İzmir yesterday, enabling them to experience a great enthusiasm in the square. An important day like September 9 was again celebrated with great enthusiasm. As cyclists we gathered at the Konak and after reaching the crowd for ten, we reached Gündoğdu Square. Later we joined the motorcycle and joined the lantern regiment. The Turkish Bayrağımız at the forefront moved to the hands. The people applaud us as a source of pride. We then proceeded slowly and reached the Republic Square. The talk of the Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Aziz KOCAOĞLU and the fireworks display after us were almost enchanted. I might even say I lost myself sometime. I felt myself among the stars myself.
After a very fascinating celebration, we proceeded from Alsancak to Konak by making little frenzy in the traffic. Did I say; Just because Izmir really knows how to celebrate, it is indeed.

KARŞIYAKA
Karsiyaka is a city of Izmir Province in Turkey. It is part of the Greater Metropolitan Area of Izmir, in other words a metropolitan district, the second largest after Konak in term of population, and it is almost entirely urbanised at the rate of 99.9 per cent, with corresponding high levels of development in terms of lifestyle and services. Karsiyaka extends for twelve kilometers along the northern and eastern coastline of the tip of the Gulf of Izmir. Its center is at a distance of 6 km (4 miles) to the north to the traditional center of entire Izmir, which is Konak Square in Konak at the opposite coast, and Izmir’s central areas are of quicker and easer access from Karsiyaka by ferry, in fifteen minutes to half an hour to various quays located along the Gulf’s eastern and southern coastline, rather than by land by going round the Gulf’s outlying coastline. Karsiyaka’s district area neighbours the district areas of Menemen to the North. Bornova to the east and Cigki to the west, the last two also being among Izmir’s metropolitan districts. Karsiyaka overall level of education is recognized as being of the highest in Turkey and besides being an active venue of commerce, culture and educational activities and tourism. Karsiyaka also boats an advanced urban culture in its own, centred around the cherished home team Karsiyaka SK, which commands a large and passionate fan base.
