The Kanji Museum and Art Exhibits
Last weekend I went to the Gion area to check out temples with my friend, and we ended up going to the Kanji Museum. After the museum we went to an art exhibit from my friend's teacher that was being held nearby. Later we went to Shijo to eat and stumbled across this other bright art exhibit!

Japanese Photo Sticker Booths: Purikura Adventure ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Forget the selfie! It's time to discover the Japanese Purikura Photo Sticker Booths. It's hard to compete with the almighty smart phone these days, but the purikura “print club” booths have evolved into a US$50M a year industry and a place were one can be beamed into the professional model fantasy world – if only for 10 minutes.
Girls love them. Guys? Not so much, but hey – purikura are ONLY in JAPAN and it's certainly something everyone should try when visiting.
★ Dressing rooms
★ Props and costumes
★ High quality lens and digital cameras
★ Pop music in the photo booth
★ Studio quality soft lighting
★ Loads of photo enhancements like soft skin tones, large eyes, longer legs and the eternally young glow.
The usual price is 400 yen and the purikura experience takes about 10 minutes to complete from start to finish.
The steps seem to be:
★ Pick a booth and pay
★ Select the photo shoot corse
★ Photo shoot
★ Editing
★ Choose the layout
★ Get your photos and online digital copy
Note: Some machines send you on photo digitally for free and ask for a monthly fee of 315 yen to access the rest of the photos.
Please careful of these. Once you join, they can be challenging to cancel.
Purikura is about the experience as much as the pictures.
As photography technology evolves in Japan, what was once a trend in 1995 has turned into one of the best ways to mark your own personal history. Definitely stop in and take a purikura when in Japan.

The Allure of the Shamisen: A Japanese Musical Tradition
The Allure of the Shamisen: A Japanese Musical Tradition
Tuesday, March 19, 6:30 PM
Played as accompaniment to kabuki plays and traditional puppet theater or by geisha, the three-stringed shamisen has been an integral part of traditional Japanese music for centuries. Janet Pocorobba, author of The Fourth String: A Memoir of Sensei and Me, took a more unconventional path, apprenticing under her eccentric sensei while living abroad in Japan. At this talk, Pocorobba will discuss the history and features of the shamisen, illuminate her own journey learning to play this enigmatic Japanese instrument, and give a demo performance. Moderated by Bradley Strauchen-Scherer, Associate Curator in the Department of Musical Instruments at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Janet Pocorobba’s involvement with Japan includes two decades of performing Japanese arts on two continents. She plays shamisen, the three drums of the kabuki orchestra (kotsuzumi, otsuzumi, and shimedaiko), and Japanese dance. In the United States Janet has lectured on Japanese music and taught shamisen individually, and has performed in concert halls, schools, museums, culture fairs, and backyards. In 2009, she created and toured 17 Views of a Shamisen, a spoken-word and music performance relating the paradoxes and angst of cross-cultural living that fans called “a Japanese Alice’s Restaurant!” In Tokyo Janet was a features writer and editor for Metropolis, Tokyo’s #1 English-language magazine. Her work has appeared in The Rumpus, The Writer, Harvard Review, [Nixes Mate], Kyoto Journal, Indiana Review, and others. She is currently associate professor and associate director of the Low-Residency MFA Program in Creative Writing at Lesley University.
Dr. Bradley Strauchen-Scherer is a curator in the Department of Musical Instruments at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where she led the renovation and reinterpretation of the five music galleries. She is particularly interested in the intersections between music, instruments, art and social history and strives to create a dialogue between these elements in her exhibition work, writing and teaching. Before moving to New York, Bradley was Deputy Keeper of Musical Instruments at the Horniman Museum, London and visiting lecturer at Goldsmith’s College, University of London. She received her PhD from the University of Oxford and is an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music. Exhibitions include The Art of Music (MMA permanent galleries 2019), Celebrating Sax (MMA 2014). She has written on topics ranging from organology to timbre, collections history and opera. Publications include the book Musical Instruments: Highlights of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Bradley is a performer on both historical and modern French horns.

Kyoto Culture-Sensui Onikawa at Queens Museum
Ai and Sensui Calligraphy & Kyoto Culture
Sunday, May 21st, 2017 1-5pm @ Queens Museum
New York City Building, Flushing Meadow Corona Park, New York
Organized by: Luchia Meihua Lee & Tomoko Kawamura
Facilitator: Taiwanese American Arts Council
Sensui Oikawa
Oikawa represents the 4th generation of a family of calligraphers, a history which originated with her great grandfather, a calligrapher some 150 years ago towards the end of the Edo period in Japan.
At four years of age, Oikawa started to learn calligraphy from her grandfather, Oikawa Habei.
In 1967, when she was 16 years old, she earned her first award as a calligrapher, and subsequently she received many important awards for her Japanese calligraphy. Oikawa has been certified to teach calligraphy, and in 1972 opened a calligraphy school.
In 1973, she also took up the Okoto, a traditional Japanese instrument, and played a concert at NHK Hall National Theater.
Oikawa’s calligraphy was displayed as a Japanese national treasure, at the Bulgarian National Library, and was collected by the library along with the calligraphy of former Prime Minister, Shinsuke Kishi - (grandfather of the current Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe).
She has exhibited in Hong Kong, Paris (at the Salon du Dessin), Los Angeles, Zurich, Lublin (Poland), Metz (France), Honolulu, Seoul, Cairo, Prague, Vienna, Moscow, Tokyo, and many other places.
Her art has been collected by various museums, including Taiwan National History Museum, Ethnographic Museum of the Republic Bulgaria, National Museum of Serbia in Belgrade, Ichikawa City Museum in Chiba Prefecture (Japan), Oriental museum German cairn, as well as by private collectors in Poland and in France
Oikawa showcases her various skills, combining calligraphy performance with playing Okoto and singing the Japanese 31-syllable Japanese poem called “tanka” to make Japanese culture more accessible to non-Japanese.
