Alto and tenor uses a six to eight strings (lines), and the baritone's largest model. In a small ukulele I hear is sorghum, but its taste has come rather closer to a deeper sound. The voice was soft and simple, but infinitely pure sound of the ukulele song makes you feel like that and finish a great concert. LONG STORY SHORT WITH LESLIE WILCOX: Sam Kamaka Jr. and Fred Kamaka Sr. | PBS Hawaiʻi
Meet second-generation owners of Kamaka Hawaii, Sam and Fred Kamaka. Now celebrating 100 years in business, Kamaka Hawaii has been the ‘ukulele crafter of choice for artists around the world.
From a young age, Sam and Fred, now 94 and 92 years old, walked the halls of their father’s ‘ukulele factory. However, that the brothers would inherit the family business was far from certain. After witnessing the attack on Pearl Harbor, then being drafted to serve during World War II, the two brothers pursued their own education and career paths, taking them far from Hawai‘i and the ‘ukulele factory.
Life changed directions overnight for Sam, joined later by his brother, and the two have dutifully worked to perfect their craft and “take care of the customer,” as their father used to say. Now, having passed the torch to their own sons, the brothers reflect on their journey.

Taimane, Hawaiian Ukulelist | Taimane Gardner | TEDxPurdueU
Without reservation we can say that you have never heard a ukulele played like this before! Taimane, which translates to “Diamond” in Samoan, sparkles on stage at TEDxPurdueU with a variety of genres of music, from classical to rock and a bit of traditional Hawaiian.
Taimane translates to diamond in Samoan and perfectly reflects the different facets of her nature. Whether delicately fingerpicking through Bach or radically ripping through Led Zeppelin, Taimane has the ability to morph genres – from classical to rock to flamenco – and stretch her instrument far beyond the familiar melodies of Hawai`i, where she grew up. In addition to performing her own distinctive versions of well-known pieces, Taimane weaves in original compositions that are as far ranging as her musical tastes. With the fierceness of a rocker, and the grace of a dancer, Taimane lights up rooms wherever she goes, sparkling like the diamond that she is.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at

Israel Kamakawiwo'ole was a popular entertainer and singer in Hawai'i until his death at the age of 38 in 1997.
His voice became famous outside Hawaii when his album Facing Future was released in 1993. His medley of Somewhere over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World was subsequently featured in several films, television programs, and television advertisement commercials.
Kamakawiwoʻole was born at Kuakini Hospital in Honolulu to Henry Kaleialoha Naniwa Kamakawiwoʻole, Jr., and Evangeline Leinani Kamakawiwoʻole. The notable Hawaiian musician Moe Keale was his uncle. He was raised in the community of Kaimuki, where his parents had met and married. He began playing music with his older brother Skippy and cousin Allen Thornton at the age of 11, being exposed to the music of Hawaiian entertainers of the time such as Peter Moon, Palani Vaughn, and Don Ho, who frequented the establishment where Kamakawiwoʻole's parents worked. Hawaiian musician Del Beazley spoke of the first time he heard Israel play, when, while playing for a graduation party, the whole room fell silent on hearing him.[2] Israel continued his path as his brother Skippy entered the Army in 1971 and cousin Allen parted ways in 1976 for the mainland.
In his early teens, he studied at Upward Bound (UB) of the University of Hawaii at Hilo and his family moved to Mākaha. There he met Louis Moon Kauakahi, Sam Gray, and Jerome Koko.[3] Together with his brother Skippy they formed the Makaha Sons of Niʻihau. A part of the Hawaiian Renaissance, this talented Hawaiian band's blend of contemporary and traditional styles gained in popularity as they toured Hawaii and the continental United States, releasing fifteen successful albums. Israel's aim was to make music that stayed true to the typical sound of traditional Hawaiian music. During that time period the songs that people associated with Hawaii weren't authentic or traditional sounding songs.
Music career
The Makaha Sons of Niʻihau recorded No Kristo in 1976 and released four more albums, including Kahea O Keale, Keala, Makaha Sons Of Niʻihau and Mahalo Ke Akua. In 1982, Kamakawiwoʻole's brother, Skippy, died at age 38 of a heart attack related to obesity. In that same year, Kamakawiwoʻole married his childhood sweetheart Marlene. Soon after, they had a daughter whom they named Ceslie-Ann Wehi.
The group became Hawaii's most popular modern traditional group with breakout albums 1984's Puana Hou Me Ke Aloha and its follow-up, 1986's Hoʻola. Kamakawiwoʻole's last recorded album with the group was 1991's Hoʻoluana. It remains the group's top-selling CD.
In 1997, Kamakawiwoʻole was again honored by HARA at the Annual Nā Hōkū Hanohano awards for Male Vocalist of the Year, Favorite Entertainer of the Year, Album of the Year, and Island Contemporary Album of the Year. He watched the awards ceremony from a hospital room.
Throughout his life, Kamakawiwoʻole was morbidly obese and at one point weighed 767 pounds (348 kg; 54.8 st) standing 6-foot-2-inch (1.88 m) tall.[10] He endured several hospitalizations because of health problems caused by his obesity.[10] Beset with respiratory, heart and other medical problems, he died at the age of 38 in Queen's Medical Center at 12:18 a.m. on June 26, 1997.[10] Kamakawiwoʻole was survived by his widow, Marlene Kamakawiwoʻole, and their daughter, Ceslie-Ann Wehi.[11]
The Hawaii state flag flew at half-staff on July 10, 1997, the day of Kamakawiwoʻole's funeral. His koa wood coffin lay in state at the state capitol building in Honolulu. He was the third person in Hawaiian history to be awarded this honor, and the only one who was not a government official. His ashes were scattered into the Pacific Ocean at Mākua Beach on July 12, 1997. On September 20, 2003, hundreds paid tribute to Kamakawiwoʻole as a bronze bust of the revered singer was unveiled at the Waianae Neighborhood Community Center on Oʻahu. The singer's widow, Marlene Kamakawiwoʻole, and sculptor Jan-Michelle Sawyer were present for the dedication ceremony.

UKULELE FRIEND: Herb Ohta Jr. and Custom Kamaka 'Ohta-san' Tenor Ukulele
Featured Artist with Herb Ohta Jr. and Custom Kamaka 'Ohta-san' Tenor Ukulele
---------------------------------------
Herb Ohta Jr. Biography
The ‘Ukulele is the best-known Hawaiian instrument. In the 1950’s and 60’s all the bands had ‘ukulele players. Some of the great musicians that made the instrument very popular were: Eddie Kamae, Ohta-san, Lyle Ritz, Don Baduria, Sr., John Lukela, Jesse Kalima, Kahauanu Lake, and Peter Moon.
Today there is a renaissance of sorts, thanks to the popularity of the new generation of ‘ukulele players influencing the young people of Hawai‘i to pick up and learn to play; Troy Fernandez, Kelly-boy Delima, and Jake Shimabukuro. Herb Ohta, Jr. is just one breed of ‘ukulele players.
Herb’s interest in music was very evident at an early age. Herb’s grandmother taught him his first song on the ‘ukulele at the age of three. The song was “Happy Birthday.” His father, Ohta-San started his early instruction on the ‘ukulele and Herb continued to study music playing the viola in high school. Herb was also a member of The Honolulu Boys Choir, The Honolulu Children’s Opera Chorus, and The University High School Select Choir.
Herb continued to take formal lessons from his father until he was 12 years old, because he started to have other interest. After being inspired by listening to the Makaha Sons of Ni‘ihau and other local musicians at the age of 17, he became a devotee of Hawaiian music and the ‘ukulele. The ‘ukulele is in his genes and Hawaiian music is in his blood. Herb enjoys listening to all types of music, Classical, Jazz, Pop, Rock, Country, Hip-hop, Rap, Latin, Salsa, and Reggae. But Herb’s favorite songs to perform are anything Hawaiian and any types of ballads. He feels that Hawaiian songs and ballads bring out the natural purist sound of the instrument. Herb’s style is reminiscent of his father, but distinct and recognizable as his very own. There is a graceful “Nahenahe” quality that is very Hawaiian, reflecting the inspirations of ‘ukulele virtuoso’s Eddie Kamae and of course Ohta-San.
At 11 years old, Herb, Jr. began to teach for his father’s ‘ukulele school occasionally while his father traveled away from home for business. In 1992, Herb started his own ‘ukulele classes and gave lessons at Sonny D’s ‘Ukulele Shop in Waipahu, O‘ahu, Harry’s Music Store in Kaimuki, O‘ahu.
Teaching six days a week, Herb also finds time to compose new material, entertain at private and public functions, produce, and record. His recording debut was in 1990 on his father’s recording. Since then, Herb has recorded on over 50 recordings. With fourteen Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award nominations to his credit, he won a Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award for ʻUkulele Nahenahe” in 2011, “Pure ʻUkulele” in 2013, and “’Ukulele Friends” in 2015. Herb is also four-time Hawai‘i Music Award Winner as well. Herb has released 3 national releases in Japan, 1 in Taiwan, and co-authored two ‘ukulele instructional books with Grammy Award artist Daniel Ho that was released in Japan and the United States. In 2015 Herb published a songbook of his arrangements in Korea.
As a teacher, composer, recording artist, entertainer, and producer, Herb Ohta, Jr. solidly establishes himself in the company of musicians who promote our Hawaiian instrument in the music landscape today. It is Herb’s goal to share the beauty of Hawai’i’s music, its culture, and the ‘ukulele to people all over the world. Herb has performed throughout the state of Hawai‘i and has traveled overseas to Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Australia, The United Kingdom, and the mainland USA.
Herb Ohta, Jr. is certainly a vanguard of his generation of ‘ukulele players, and he is well on his way to matching his father’s legacy.

Circa 1940: Kamaka 'Cigar Box' Ukulele - 'Cedar Wood'
One of the ultimate historical and collectible ukuleles on the vintage market, handcrafted by Samuel Kamaka Jr. This wonderful piece remains in original condition with normal strum and play wear. Historians say that only a few of these vintage Kamaka cigar box ukuleles were created by Samuel Kamaka Jr. in the 1940s-1950s. This beautiful piece is the very same instrument featured in the ukulele book, The Ukulele: A Visual History by Jim Beloff. The ukulele is featured on page 83 and is the top instrument - there are two pictures of a Kamaka cigar box ukulele on the page.
Urban legend says that Samuel Kamaka Jr. had a neighbor who enjoyed smoking cigars and as he smoked the cigars he was left with the empty cigar boxes. The man gave 12 of these vintage cigar boxes to Kamaka - of which Kamaka successfully made 7 cigar box ukuleles. The neck and fretboard are hand carved from Hawaiian monkeypox wood and the body of the instrument is made from the 1886 cigar box (cedar wood) complete with the original metal hinges on the soundboard.
