Nattarasankottai is famous world over for the Kannathal temple. The Kannathal Temple is said to have built in the mid-18th century. One could find names like 'Kannappan' (for male children), 'Kannathal', 'Kannammai' and 'Kanmani' (for female children) abundant in the community. The temple is managed by the village Nagarathars.
The temple is famous for its architectural marvel and Golden Kumbhams over the Temple tower. The deity, Kannudaya Nayaki Amman alias Kannathal is seen with eight hands and has an udukkai (a percussion striking instrument) and muvizhai sulam in her hands. Her left leg stamps the Asura by name Mahishan.
Kannathal is famous for healing eye aliments and correcting eye sight, and also other illnesses. Mavilakku, a flour made offering for the Goddess is offered by the devotees to appease her and to get her blessings.
The first 'Kumbabishekam' (Consecration of the temple) took place on 12 September 1938, the second on 6 September 1976 and the third on 1 May 1989 and also last kumbabishekam was on 2005. 'Sevvai Pongal' during the Tamil month Thai, is a festival that is celebrated by Nagarathars of this village, during which tickets will be pooled and drawn and based on that places near the temple are allotted to all the nagarathar families for making Pongals. Non-Nagarthars also contribute a lot to this festival. Other festivals of the temple include 'Muzhalkuttu Thiruvizha' during the Tamil month of Aadi, 'Navarathri' during the Tamil month of Purattasi and 'Thailakkappu Utsavam' during the Tamil month of Thai. There are many temples in Nattarasankottai of which a Sivan temple is also famous. Ashtami Thiruvizha and Sivarathri are the famous festivals of this temple.

Nattarasankottai. It's been situated near Sivaganga district of Tamil Nadu, India and well placed in between the highways of Sivaganga to Thondy. Here, the temple, what we are going to see, has been the well known one, that is, Goddess Sree Kannudaiyanayaghi Amman or otherwise, colloquially called as Sree Kannathal.
There has been the legend that how far, the temple of Goddess Sri Kannudaiyanayaghi amman has been raised. Avery small village, named as Pirandakulum, but it has been documented as Thirandha kulum in Sivagangai Municipality, lies very near to Nattarasankottai. On those days, the people belonged to yadava community had to sell their milk products like milk, butter milk and ghee to Nattarasankottai, by passing through this small village.
One of those milk vendors had experienced a strange phenomenon, that he had been often obstructed by a stone and by which, his milk pot had drenched that stone. He, one day wanted to unearth the stone with the help of a long digging iron bar. When having done so, he found bleeding came out from that stone. He became very frightened enough to run to his village and conveyed this incident to everybody.
At once, all the people had rushed to the spot, where that strange phenomenon had often taken place. From the gathering, one person who had been transfixed and told everybody that it had been only occurred due to unleash the divine power from that spot. That great divine power had been transformed as in the name of sri Kannudaiyanayaghi amman and the temple had been built for her at Nattarasankottai.
There had been one Tamil poet, named as, Muthu vinayagam pillai, who was the author of 'Kannudayanayaki Amman pallu'. Before, having written this divine poetry, he who had lived in Tirunelveli, was seriously suffering from both Stomach ache and acute chest pain. On those days, only by walk, he had reached Thirukoshtiyur, which has been one of the 108 Divya desams of lord Vishnu situated very near to Thirupathur.
When he was sleeping near the temple car on that night, he had been gifted with the book rest, which has been called as Thaligai in Tamil language by lord Vishnu, who has enshrined there as in the name of sowmiya narayana perumal, had told the Tamil poet that he could reach to Nattarasankottai and if he would have written poetry about goddess Kannudayanayaki amman, he could have been retrieved from his long term acute diseases. The Tamil poet, on having obeyed the order of lord Vishnu reached Nattarasankottai and had stayed there in the temple and also completed the poetry named as 'Kannudayanayaki Amman pallu’. That poet also had cured from his long term acute diseases.
Aluguni siddhar, one among the 18 siddhars, has said to been remained as in the jeeva samadhi under the tank of the holy theertham. siddhars have got the divine power of ‘Ashtama siddhis’, by which they could able to remain in jeeva samathi, wherever they wish. There has been no restriction of boundary of time and distance for siddhars. He, in his Tamil hymn, had described the beauty of goddess Kannudayanayaki amman, by having assumed Her, as his holy mother.
