Temple Hopping Around Ueno | Japan 2016 | Episode 25
Our first stop on our temple hop was Tennoji Temple in the Yanaka area just a short walk north from Ueno. It is a walled complex with a large Buddha statue, gardens and beautiful buildings. It was so peaceful while we were there, having it to ourselves for the most part of our visit. Right outside of Tennoji Temple is Yanaka Cemetery, a large cemetery which used to be connected to the temple in years past.
After wandering around the cemetery for awhile we started to make our way to our next destination for the day, deciding to take a route through a little residential area with a few smaller temples dotted around according to Google Maps. What we found was an extremely charming neighbourhood with temple after temple to visit. It took us a lot longer to make our way to our next destination because it seemed that at every turn there was a new temple to explore.
After visiting our last temple in the Yanaka area, with it’s large golden Buddha statue, we were hungry and happened upon a little Chinese restaurant. It was a little hole in the wall kind of place but produced some amazing food which hit the spot and sent us on our way to Nezu Shrine.
This shrine is located on very large grounds, feeling more like a park with a shrine. It was very green and leafy, had a large pond with koi and several pathways lined with orange torii gates. It was the torii which lured us in, but the shrine building and it’s accompanying gate turned out to be outstanding and slightly unusual for it’s lavish embellishments.
Our last stop along our hop was Ueno Toshogu Shrine located in Ueno Park. This shrine is dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu who was the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate. It’s similarly lavish as Nezu Shrine, a very similar looking construction method. It’s hard to get a sense of the grandeur of the Shrine as it’s gated and visitors are not allowed inside the guarded area.
We strolled out of Ueno Park via a pathway lined with trees lite up to resemble cherry blossoms, at least that was our take, and past a octagonal temple on Benten Island.
All that hopping had us hungry and we were craving BBQ meats. We headed to the red light district, Kabukicho, where we’ve had success finding a great little place in the past. After taking in some of the spectacle of Kabukicho we found a BBQ place which felt oddly familiar. Nicole thought we had eaten there before. It was fantastic, nothing quite like grilling your own meat over charcoal at your table.
Full we headed home via Shinjuku Station, the large station right next to Kabukicho.
We hope you enjoy coming along and enjoying the sights with us.

A PSA from Japan about 'Ijime', which from what I can glean is some form of bullying.
Children wearing freaky masks with some odd pseudo-80s music in the background is a formula for an unsettling PSA. At least for me it is.
The bit at the end is a bit...geh. I just don't like it.

The LEGO Batman Movie – Trailer #4
In theaters February 10, 2017!
In the irreverent spirit of fun that made “The LEGO® Movie” a worldwide phenomenon, the self-described leading man of that ensemble – LEGO Batman – stars in his own big-screen adventure. But there are big changes brewing in Gotham, and if he wants to save the city from The Joker’s hostile takeover, Batman may have to drop the lone vigilante thing, try to work with others and maybe, just maybe, learn to lighten up.
