KOKO HEAD | FULL HIKE - HAWAII 2018
On this day (February 2018), I hiked/explored Koko Crater Trail or also known as Koko Head in the state of Hawaii (Honolulu). This steep mountain climb to the top of Koko Head Crater has spectacular panoramic views of the East Honolulu shoreline with an abandoned railroad track that goes around 1000 plus steps. In World War II, the military used this railroad track as part of an incline tram to transport supplies to the lookout post at the summit.
I did Stairway to Heaven 1st and then KOKO Head the next day:

Koko Head Hike - Amazing Hiking Trails in Oahu
Go to for lots more travel adventures!
Koko Head hike is one of the most strenuous hikes on the island of Oahu - located on the outskirts of Honolulu, Hawaii.
The hike goes straight up the side of Koko Head Crater, following a old cable car railroad. The top of the mountain was originally a military bunker so the cable cars were there in order to transport good from the bottom to the top.
Today the cable car is no longer functioning but is instead open to the public as a hiking trail. The trail leads up 1080 steps to the top.
On the trail you just follow the railroad ties step by step. In the middle of the hike there's a small bridge that you need to cross, however if that proves to be too frightening, you can take the trail around the bridge.
Koko Head hike offers an extremely magnificent view from the top of the mountain with a view of downtown Honolulu, Waikiki and also Hawaii Kai and Hanauma Bay.
The hike should take anywhere from 15 minutes to 45 minutes, depending on your level of fitness.
By the way, it's quite a demanding hike, it will surely get your heart pumping!

Coordonnées GPS: 21°16'40.1N 157°41'33.0W (Goeas Baseball Field, Anapalau Street)

Koko Head Crater Trail Hike - Abandoned Railroad Train Tracks (Honolulu, Hawaii)
This was a really cool hike!!!! It's about 1.8 miles total. You climb an old rail track the entire way up. There are some scary ledges too! I think the rain that hit was really enjoyable and made for some great video moments! WHen you get to the top, you can climb through a hole in a doorway. You can then explore the buildings inside. Would definately do again! Top 10 O'ahu hike for me!
Located in: Koko Head District Park
Address: 7604 Koko Head Park Rd #7602, Honolulu, HI 96825

Route Type: Out & Back
Koko Crater Trail is a 2.9 kilometer heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking, running, nature trips, and bird watching and is accessible year-round.
This is a steep climb to the top of Koko Head Crater with spectacular panoramic views of the east Honolulu shoreline. The 1000 plus step-like walking track consists of abandoned railroad ties that run along the crater's west side to the top of Koko Crater. The military used them previously during World War II as part of an incline tram to transport supplies to a lookout post at the summit.
A short drive from Diamond Head and Waikiki, this popular hiking trail can be accessed at Koko Head Park in Hawaii Kai. This is a great workout with a beautiful view at the summit - don't forget to bring water! Visitors might also be interested in the Koko Crater Botanical Garden at the top of the crater.

Oahu Island is home to roughly one million people - about two-thirds of the population of the U.S. state of Hawaii. The city of Honolulu, largest city, state capital, and main deepwater marine port for the State of Hawaiʻi is located here.
Well-known features found on Oʻahu include Waikiki, Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, Hanauma, Kaneʻohe Bay, Kailua Bay, North Shore.
I spent five days on Oahu Island, drove 340 miles by car and visited, incl. the places described below. My hotel was in Honolulu.

Koko Head Crater Hike Trail, Hawaii Kai, Oahu, Hawaii, GoPro Hero3 Black Edition
A relatively short hike, the Koko Crater Trail is only about 1.5 miles (from parking lot to the summit), but increases in elevation by 1,200 feet! This hike is challenging due to the sharp incline, but the views at the top are well worth the effort; you'll get a breathtaking 360 degree view of east O'ahu. There are 1048 steps on this trail. The steps are made of old railway ties. Many locals come here as a way to get an extremely good, quick cardio workout.

Koko Crater Trail hike is a 1.8 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Honolulu, HI that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and birding and is accessible year-round.
A steep climb to the top of Koko Head Crater with spectacular views in every direction Koko Head Trail is one of those trails where you ask yourself, Why am I doing this?
Park in the lot and walk along the road to the trail, which is a 200 feet from the parking lot. The trail goes straight up the stairs midway up must cross trestle, which is dangerous if you misstep. This will get the heart pumping and is not for those with bad knees. Take WATER! and a camera! Great for training, lots of athletes use this for workouts, but the views of Koko Crater and surrounding area are spectacular. Crowded on weekends. Note there is another way up to the top via the ocean side ridge trail... past Hanauma Bay.
The step-like walking track are the ties of an abandoned railway that runs along the crater's west side. This is one of the best trails leading to Puu Mai, the craters highest peak. The ties were for an incline tram used by the military during World War II, to transport personnel and supplies to a lookout post on the summit. Access to this trail starts at Koko Head Park in Hawaii Kai.
The first part of the hike is over a newly landscaped hill behind Goeas Baseball Field to the bottom of the old rail track. Its an exhausting trip. But the real fun is still to come. Your next mission is a trek up the 1,000-plus steps to the top of Koko crater. The reward? A panoramic view of the east Honolulu shorelinenot to mention one heck of a workout. A note of caution: Parts of the decades-old railway trail are in disrepair, possibly unsafe and recommended for experienced hikers only. If you do go, prepare accordingly and proceed with caution.
You'll find tips from The Division of State Parks for preparing for similar hikes here. The view from the top is breathtaking. You can, on a clear day, see all three Islands and the other side of Koko crater.

Koko Head Crater Trail - RAILWAY TO HELL (Hawaii)
Is a 1.8 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Honolulu, Hawaii that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as difficult. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round.
A steep climb to the top of Koko Head Crater with spectacular views in every direction. Turn left on Lunalilo Home Rd, then right on Anapalau St, which ends on Koko Head State Park Rd (this road can be accessed from Hwy 72, but is sometimes closed). Park in the lot and walk along the road to the trail, which is a 200 feet from the parking lot. The trail goes straight up the stairs midway up must cross trestle, which is dangerous if you misstep. This will get the heart pumping and is not for those with bad knees. Take WATER! and a camera! On a clear day you can see all three Islands and the other side of Koko crater. There are plenty of places to hang out at the top. The trail isn't very shady but there a few sections you can sneak a break. Overall this isn't much a hike but a workout with a view at the end. Wear hiking shoes and take your time going up and down. You don't want to hurt yourself by slipping or having a heart attack. For the most part, the trail can be crowded later in the morning so it's best to go early.
A note of caution: Parts of the decades-old railway trail are in disrepair, possibly unsafe and recommended for experienced hikers only. If you do go, prepare accordingly and proceed with caution.

KOKO HEAD STAIRS / HAWAII
1100 un-even stairs/rail road ties up the side of Koko Head Crater. The tracks were built over 60 years ago to take supplies to the top of the Crater were there are military bunkers.
A great hike and workout. Not for the faint of heart. Koko Head is not a long hike but is a very difficult climb to the top. The stairs are very steep. Well worth the pain to capture the beauty of the island from way Up On The Mountain.

Went on a Hike up Koko head a fairly challenging and very steep incline hike in Oahu Hawaii on the east side. Beautiful Views and a good place to meet people who are hiking, taking pics from all over the world.
I'm not one for heights so this isn't my favorite Hike in the world, but its completley worth it when you get to the top!

Barak Obama Hike Koko Head Trail 14.03.2015 Hawaii Hiking GoPro HERO4 Silver
Koko Head is the headland that defines the eastern side of Maunalua Bay along the southeastern side of the Island of Oʻahu in Hawaiʻi. On its western slope is the community of Portlock, a part of Hawaiʻi Kai. Koko Head (at 642 ft or 196 m) is an ancient tuff cone that is somewhat dwarfed by its neighboring tuff cone, Koko Crater, with its peak, Kohelepelepe (or Puʻu Mai), rising to 1208 ft or 368 m. Koko Head itself has three significant depressions or old vents, the largest of which forms the well-known Hanauma Bay. Koko Head's last eruption was 30,000–35,000 years ago.[1]
This eastern end of Oʻahu is quite scenic and most of the area is part of Koko Head Regional Park, administered by the City & County of Honolulu. The following features and natural areas are found between Koko Head and the eastern end of the island at Makapuʻu:
Koko Crater is a massive cinder cone that visually dominates the area. Within the crater are horse stables and the Koko Crater Botanical Garden specializing in cacti and succulents.
Hanauma Bay is a tuff ring breached by the ocean.
Lānaʻi Lookout is a scenic lookout that features a very distant view of the Island of Lānaʻi to the southeast of Oʻahu. Molokaʻi, directly across the Kaiwi Channel, is closer and nearly always visible during the day; Lānaʻi is visible only under good atmospheric conditions, although if visible from anywhere on Oʻahu, it will be visible from this pull-out/parking area. The cremated ashes of President Barack Obama's mother, Stanley Ann Dunham (1995) and maternal grandmother, Madelyn Lee Payne Dunham (2008) were scattered here.[2]
Hālona Blowhole is a blowhole in the rocky shore. A large pull-out/parking area is present. The adjacent Hālona Cove is best known as the site of the love scene between Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr in the movie From Here to Eternity.
Sandy Beach is a popular beach for surfing and a park popular for kite flying because trade winds (offshore here) are strong and steady most days. Sea conditions off the beach tend to be rough most of the time and the bottom drops away relatively quickly, so this is not a beach for relaxed swimming, but very popular for more extreme water sports and watchers.
HERO4
GoPro Hero 4 Silver Edition.
In September 2014 GoPro announced the HERO4, available in Black Edition and Silver Edition, which replace their respective HERO3+ generation predecessors. The Hero, a budget camera, was also announced.
The HERO4 Silver Edition[44] is basically a HERO4 Black Edition with the addition of a micro speaker, touch screen, the first GoPro with this, a lower clocked Cortex-A9 and missing the Black Editions integrated Analog-to-digital converter which supports a wider variety of professional low-sensitivity external mics. [45] The video modes supported by the HERO4 Silver Edition are similar to those of the HERO3+ Black, due to the higher processing speed and thermal requirements of 4K video (3840×2160), but it supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and contains the same [46][47] Ambarella A9[48] SoC as in the HERO4 Black.
The HERO4 models maintains the H.264 video codec of previous versions and MP4 file formats. GoPro claims the mono microphone in both the Black and Silver Editions have twice the dynamic range of the HERO3+, and that the HERO4 Black and Silver Editions have improved low light performance.
