Kothaligad or Peth Fort is a fort located in Karjat near Ambivali village. Its unique funnel like construction of steps through the rock and upto the pinnacle is an engineered marvel. One can also visit the Ambivali Caves nearby ambivali village after a short 20 min walk which is not much visited.

Kothaligad is a small funnel fort near Karjat (Maharashtra). The fort is also called Peth Fort because of its vicinity to Peth village. Unlike other funnel hill forts, the pinnacle or the funnel is carved from the inside, forming a circular staircase that reaches the top. The superlative view from the top of the pinnacle combined with this unique and awe-inspiring engineering feat definitely deserves a visit.
Kothaligad is accessible via a moderate 5.6 KM/3-hour trek starting from the road head at Ambivali village. A dirt road connects Peth village to Ambivali and this makes Peth village accessible with a motorcycle or with a four-wheel-drive vehicle. However, we recommend that you park at Ambivali and walk to Kothaligad because there are some stellar viewpoints along the way.
To reach Ambivali village, a bus is available from Karjat Bus Station at 8.30AM. The last bus from #Ambivali to Karjat is at 5.30PM.

किल्ल्याला पायथ्याच्या ’पेठ’ या गावामुळे याला ‘पेठचा किल्ला’ असेही संबोधले जाते. लहानशा दिसणार्या या किल्ल्याचा इतिहास मोठा रक्तरंजित आहे. त्याविषयाची माहिती मराठी व इंग्रजी कागदपत्रातून नव्हे तर मुघली कागदपत्रांमधून मिळते. हा किल्ला काही बलाढ्य दुर्ग नाही, पण एक संरक्षक ठाणं होता. मराठ्यांचे या किल्ल्यावर शस्त्रागार होते. संभाजीमहाराजांच्या काळात त्याला विशेष महत्त्वही प्राप्त झाले होते.
नारोजी त्रिंबक हा गडाचा किल्लेदार रसद व दारुगोळा, जवळील गावातून मिळविण्याकरिता गेला होता.गडावरील त्याचा माणूस माणकोजी पांढरे ह्याच्या ताब्यात त्याने गड दिला. माणकोजी पांढरे औरंगजेबाला फितूर झाला होता. त्याने रात्रीच्या काळोखात अब्दूल कादर व त्याच्या सैन्याला, हे आपलेच लोक रसद घेवून आले आहेत असे सांगून गडात प्रवेश दिला आणि त्यानी गडावरचं सैन्य कापून काढले.
गडाला भेट देण्यासाठी दोन मार्गावरुन येवु शकता
१) कर्जत ला उतरुन - कशेळी साठि बस पकडावी - कशेळी वरुन - आंबिवली गावसाठी ६ सिटर टमटम करुन आंबिवली गावात उतरावे (जामरुखची एस्टी पकडून आंबिवली गावात यावे.
२) तसेच कर्जत हुन डायरेक्ट जामरुख ची बस सुध्दआहे जी तुम्हाला आंबीविली गावात सोडेल .
३) नेरळ ला उतरुन - ला उतरुन - कशेळी साठि ६ सिटर टमटम पकडावी
कशेळी वरुन - आंबिवली गावसाठी ६ सिटर टमटम करुन आंबिवली

रायगड तालुक्यातल्या कर्जत(पूर्व) रेल्वे स्टेशनपासून कशेळेमार्गे जाणारी आंबिवले बस आहे. आंबिवलीजवळ एक छान तळे आहे. तिथून चढ लागतो. तीन किलोमीटरवर पेठ गाव लागते. कोठळीगडाचा हा पायथा आहे. थोड्याशा बिकट चढणीने किल्ल्याच्या माथ्यावर पोचता येते. खाली तळात काही पंचरसी तोफा पडल्या आहेत. या किल्ल्याच्या लहान आकारावरून असे वाटते की किल्ल्याचा उपयोग केवळ एक चौकी म्हणून होत असावा. पेठच्या पठारावरून पूर्वेला वांदरे खिंडीत जाण्यास पायवाट आहे.

Peth, also known as ‘Kothaligad’, is situated in Shahapur Taluka, approximately 21 km north-east of Karjat. This fort stands tall in the company of various other forts like Rajmachi, Dhak, Siddhagad and Bhimashankar, a witness to our illustrious history. Kothaligad is more commonly known as the fort of Peth because the village of Peth is situated at its base.

Best time to do this trek is month of August & September means in rainy season you can visit anytime. because of rain this fort carry view of most beautiful waterfalls on its path and not just 1 or 2, lots of waterfall and all are mesmerising. From the top you will see beautifull dancing clouds.
How to Reach :
Reach Karjat via Bus or Train
from Karjat you can take Bus/Auto or Taxi Cab for Ambevali.
Taxi is also available from Neral station but not frequent as Karjat.
At returning Ambevali to Neral is good choice.
- one day is enough for trek.
What to avoide :
. avoid wearing half pents, use full pent.
. heavy backpack.
.throwing plastic on path.
.comedown before 6 in evening. mostly vehicle not available after 6.
. avoide doing trek in heavy rain.
