Koth Duwa Raja Maha Viharaya - Madhu Ganga Sri Lanka
The Kothduwa temple, or Koth Duwa Raja Maha Viharaya, is a Buddhist temple located on Kothduwa Island on the Madu Ganga in southern Sri Lanka. The island is located in Galle District of the Southern Province approximately 35 km (22 mi) north of Galle and 88 km (55 mi) south of Colombo.[1]
The temple is believed to have once sheltered the sacred relic of the tooth of the Buddha, circa 340 CE.[2] The Bodhi tree on the island was planted from a bud of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi by Deva Pathiraja, minister to King Parakramabahu IV.[3]

The Pilana Raja Maha Vihara or Pilana Temple is a Buddhist temple in Galle, Sri Lanka. The Chief Incumbent (Chief Priest) is Meepe Wagira Thera. The temple is well known in the southern part of the island for its historical Perahera festival. The Pilana Raja Maha Vihara is located in the Galle District, near the Galle – Akuressa Highway (A17), about 11 km (6.8 mi) from Galle. The temple is situated on a small hill surrounded by paddy fields, and is visible from the Galle – Akuressa Highway

The Madu Ganga is a minor watercourse which originates near Uragasmanhandiya in the Galle District of Sri Lanka, before widening into the Madu Ganga Lake at Balapitiya. The river then flows for a further a 4.4 km (2.7 mi) before draining into the Indian Ocean.
The Buddhist Amarapura Nikaya sect had its first upasampada (higher ordination ceremony) on a fleet of boats anchored upon it in 1803. The Buddhist Kothduwa temple is situated on an isolated island in the lake.
Together with the smaller Randombe Lake, to which it is connected by two narrow channels, it forms the Madu Ganga wetland. Its estuary and the many mangrove islets on it constitute a complex coastal wetland ecosystem. In has high ecological, biological and aesthetic significance, being home to approximately 303 species of plants belonging to 95 families and to 248 species of vertebrate animals. The inhabitants of its islets produce peeled cinnamon and cinnamon oil.
The Maduganga Wetland was declared in 2003, in terms of the Ramsar Convention.

One of the main attractions of Madu Ganga is most likely the Koth Duwa Raja Maha Viharaya, a one-and-a-half century old temple situated within the wetland. It is believed that this serene temple had provided first accommodation for the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha when it was brought to the isle. The Chief Prelate of Kothduwa Raja Maha Vihara, Ven. Omanthai Pugngnasara, is the fourth chief prelate successor of the temple. The temple also owns a 130-year old Bo tree planted by King Parakramabahu's Minister, Deva Pathiraja. Samson Rajapakse Wasala Mudali built the temple around the Bodhi as the years swept by.
Though many do not hesitate to stop by the temple while passing by on boat, it seems a pity that the visitors, most being the locals, tend to leave their rubbish littered by the river banks. This process gravely affects the growth of the mangroves and a number of creatures they harbour. According to Chief Prelate Ven. Pugngnasara the road leading up to the Veragala port from the Colombo-Galle main road is also badly in need of repair. He stated that they have informed the authorities but no steps have been taken to attend to the matter. (ref:
