Off The Beaten Path KYOTO, JAPAN - Kurama-dera Temple 鞍馬寺 (HD) (GoPro)
Only 30 minutes train ride from Kyoto sits the mountain temple of Kurama-dera. One of the few places near Kyoto that you can escape the crowds and enjoy some solitude.
Kurama-dera was a member of the Tendai sect and subordinate to Shōren-in from the 12th century until 1949 when it founded its own religious body. The object of worship is esoteric and unique to the temple.
The temple was founded in the 8th century AD. Its origins are historically unclear, but it is said that the Chinese monk Jianzhen initiated a disciple into the Buddhist path, who saw in a dream in 772 that Mount Kurama had a spiritual power and built an esoteric temple to concentrate and control this power. It was burned down many times throughout the medieval era but the Buddhist statues and treasures inside it were always rescued and are today National Treasures. It is still believed today that tengu and other mountain spirits live in this area.
The temple switched between three different Buddhist sects over the centuries. Finally, in the postwar era, abbot Kouun Shigaraki founded his own religion and split the temple away from Buddhism. Thus the temple was finally able to reconcile with its yamabushi patrons and other unaffiliated, esoteric adherents of mountain worship.

Mylungpuppy is the channel of musician Ron Anderson.
I have been making avant-music for over forty years in a number of different projects; PAK, The Molecules, RonRuins, numerous collaborations and solo. I combine composition and improvisation exploring the regions where they intersect. Sometimes my music is brutal, but I’m not afraid of melody, in general my work is pretty much out there.
The main focus of my channel is music, but I also make vlogs on various subjects, cycling, touring and traveling, vegan food, rare vinyl LPs, audio field recordings, etc. Because not everyone is going to be interested in all the subjects covered on this channel, I have made playlists so you do not have to search through videos to find what you are looking for.
I try to answer questions and respond to as many comments as I can, any and all feedback from you is welcome.
I'm trying to make at least one or two new videos a week.

Kurama-dera (鞍馬寺) Temple, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan
Kurama Temple (Kurama-dera 鞍馬寺), is located north of Kyoto City on Mt. Kurama (鞍馬山, about 1800 feet above the sea level) and is about 12 kilometers from the center of Kyoto City. It can be reached in 30 minutes from Kyoto by car or train. I suggest use the Train (Eizan Railways Kurama Train), to enjoy the scenic ride. Watch my video of this ride to the temple.
The Kurama Temple (鞍馬寺), founded in 770 as the guardian of the northern quarter of the capital city (Heiankyo), is located halfway up the Mt. Kurama. The temple formerly belonged to the Tendai sect of Buddhism, but since 1949, it has been included in the newly founded Kurama-Kokyo sect as its headquarters.
The trek up to the temple is beautiful and picturesque, although you can take a cable car also up to the temple. Mt. Kurama is the only temple, in the entire Kyoto City area is said to inhabit a rattle snake type snake called Mamushi in Japanese. Coming across the trekkers with the snake is not very common but the temple officials warn the travelers to leave them alone, if you see them.
The main temple is only half the way up Mt. Kurama, so trekking enthusiasts to this temple, can try a further up the mountain trek, which is also very interesting with many little shrines and temples. The trek actually ends, at Kibune Shrine, which is away from the Kurama Temple. Good thing is that at Kibune Shrine, you can hop on the Eizan Railways train back to the Kyoto City. I did half of this trek, please watch my video of the trek.
All and all, if you visit Kyoto city, make sure that you visit this temple.
Enjoy..

Japan Vlog #003 - Day 3 in Kyoto (Hiking day from Kibune to Kurama)
Wake up super early to take the first train to Kibune. The train will takes you through the forest of maple trees, so if you come at autumn season, you are able to enjoy the beauty of maple trees.
After we reach Kibune-guchi station, we plan to take bus to Kifune Shrine. But its too bad that bus start operating at 9:10am, & we reach there about 7:30am. Walk from Kibune-guchi station to Kifune Shrine. Explore the beauty of the mountain & river side walk. This is definitely the best experience of my whole Japan trip.
Places I visit:
1. Kifune Shrine
Experience water paper fortune
** Kibune : If you come at summer season, don't forget to try Nagashi Somen (serving of thin white noodles via flowing cold water, slide down from bamboo pipe) at Hirobun restaurant.
2. Kurama Temple

Kurama dera: Setsubun Matsuri 2018 in Kyoto Japan.
Every year on February third the Setsubun festival is held in Japan. Over the years have been to many events in Kyoto and this year I went to Kurama Dera in the north of Kyoto. Sitting atop a mountain it's a 960.47 meter or 3151.14 ft steep climb to the Hondo. Although there is the option of using the cable car you still have to climb some steeps steps.
Setsubun is celebrated a bit differently here in that there is no mamemaki (豆撒き) (literally bean scattering). Instead sacred arrows are shot into the crowd. The primitive bow and arrows are made of a beach branch. Attached is a small colorful paper which is a lucky charm.
In spite of the steep climb there where many eagerly people hoping to catch one of the many arrows. It was a fun experience away from the downtown Kyoto crowds.
Magic Snow Scenery at Kurama Dera in Kyoto.
This year, during Shōgatsu here in Kyoto, it snowed and that is a rare event. There was lots of snow and I used to opportunity during the Hatsumōde period to visit Kurama dera and climb its famous mountain. There where not so many people as in some more popular shrines or temples. Follow me as I climb the mountain and take in the snowy scenery. The winding path to the main hall is lined with lanterns that where covered with snow. Along the way are many sub-temples and shrines, amongst them the famous Yuki Shrine.
When I reached the plateau were the Hon-dō hall is many people took turns standing on the power spot of Kurama dera and offering their prayers. Some people where warming their cold feet at an open fire and temple staff offered everyone some sake.
Going down the mountain I passed by the Tahō-tō Pagoda and used the cable car to go down.
I’ve been a few times to Kurama dera, but this time was special, magical I’d say and I didn’t even feel the cold.
HIKING MOUNT KURAMA - Japan Vlog 7
Day Nine of my Japanese Adventure!
We (mostly) hike up Mt Kurama to amazingly peaceful, Kurama Dera. Cheating slightly, by taking the shortest funicular rail ever, up the side of the mountain, we had the most chilled experience ever up in the hills of Kyoto.

Trekking Mt. Kurama (鞍馬山) beyond Kurama-dera (鞍馬寺) Temple, Kyoto
Japan has many beautiful mountains and wooded areas that are excellent for trekking and I have gotten a chance to do some of these treks. Some of the treks are just pure treks and others may be associated with visiting a temple or a shrine. Fun thing with these type of treks is that you get a chance to visit a great ancient temple and then get to satisfy your trekking enthusiasm.
This particular trek is beyond the Kuramadera (鞍馬寺) Temple on Mt. Kurama (鞍馬山) in Kyoto City. Getting to Kuramadera itself is a good sized trek if you decide not to take the Cable Car. But you can also get beyond Kuramadera onto the Mt. Kurama. The trek ends on the side of the mountain at the Kibune Shrine. From this point you can come back to Kuramadera Temple or go to the nearest Eizan Railways Kibune Shrine station to get back to Kyoto City.
Hope you get to do this trek and many other treks in Japan, during your visits to Japan.

ASMR - Kurama-Dera in Kyoto ✦ Kurama Station
This is ASMR style video, let me know what you think.
I took the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto and then took the Eizan Line all the way to the last station. The last station is Kurama Station. This is one of the most unique Stations I have visited. There is a wonderful Temple called Kurama-Dera and it is a wonderful hike up the mountain. There is also an Onsen nearby so you can go to the Onsen after the long hike. In the station, there are books and manga you can read while you wait for the next available train. I highly recommend going here. Remember to Subscribe.

Kurama-dera Temple(Mount Kurama) in Kyoto Japan Travel Guide.

Places to Go: Mt Kurama
Located in the northern part of Kyoto, Mt. Kurama is known for its spirituality and its breathtaking natural beauty. The temple Kurama-dera has a history from the year 770, and each season shows visitors a different face. Whether you take the cable car or hike up the mountain, you’re surrounded by verdant mountain forests where you may be able to spot some of the local wildlife. The temple’s main hall offers a gorgeous view out over the surrounding mountains, and a sandō path connects it to the nearby Kibune Village and Kifune Shrine. Mt. Kurama is also believed to be the birthplace of reiki, a type of “energy therapy” which utilizes spiritual elements. Tengu, long-nosed or beaked creatures believed to be the guardians of the mountain, can be found as statues, art, and goods in the mountain village and in the temple complex.

Kyoto's Hidden Onsen Town | Kurama Onsen and Kibune Shrine
Hey guys!
I went on a day trip up to Kurama, Kyoto the other day. Japan's famous for its multitude of hot springs, so I thought I would take advantage of that and go up to Kurama Onsen for a relaxing getaway. We also hiked up Kifune Shrine, a temple in the far north of Kyoto. Overall, it was a 10/10 day, and I would highly recommend you go if you have the chance!
Thanks so much for watching, and hope you guys have a great rest of your day :)
