Kyoto (Japan) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Kyoto in Japan.
Kyoto is considered to be the cradle of Japanese culture, an ancient imperial city with twelve hundred years of history. Emperor Saga honoured the monk, Kukai, by giving him the eastern Toji Temple as the centre of Shingon Buddhism. The lecture hall is home to a figurine-mandala consisting of twenty-one wooden sculptures and in the centre is the mighty figure of cosmic Buddha, Dainichi. On the northern edge of the city is the Kinkakuji Temple, the Golden Pavilion. It is one of the most beautiful buildings of the Muromachi Period whose gilded facade reflects in a pond. The Kamigamo Shrine was one of the most influential and powerful shrines during Heian times. It was here that nobles and members of the imperial court sought proximity to the Shinto heads of the shrine. It was founded in the late seventh centuryand its thirty-six buildings are classified as national cultural treasures. The well-preserved Gion Quarter east of the Kamo River is known for its traditional performances, such as that of koto music. Gagaku music and dance is also featured, as once performed in the Japanese royal court.Kyoto is ancient Japan, a place of both culture and religion.

Kiyomizu-dera temple and gardens, Kyoto, Japan travel video
Kiyomizu-dera is the most popular temple in all of Kyoto, Japan. The main hall is the most spectacular single item here. It’s up on large wooden stilts and designated as a national treasure.
Large verandas and main halls like this were constructed at many popular sites in the past to accommodate large numbers of pilgrims.
And then we have the views looking out across from the main hall into downtown.
Looking up towards the temple which is up on the hillside.
An old tradition that held that if you could survive a 13 meter jump from the stage, your wish would be granted. Over 200 people jumped, most of them surviving, but that practice is now prohibited.
You can also buy good luck charms and various kiosks here and omikugi which are the paper fortunes, and incense and various other talismans.
Shoppers will be kept quite busy at the various kiosks and you can also get a bite to eat at some of the food stands.
The word Kiyomizu means clear water, or pure water. The Otowa waterfall runs off the nearby hills in three channels of water that fall into a fountain. Visitors can catch and drink the water, which is believed to have wish-granting powers. And it’s said you will gain health, longevity, and success in studies by drinking from the three different streams.
These typical incense burners offer a smoke that's designed to chase away the evil spirits.
The temple is actually so old that it predates Kyoto itself. It dates back to the 700s, before Kyoto was founded as a city. Of course the structures have been rebuilt numerous times since then. Most of the structures have been rebuilt numerous times since then. There are some 30 buildings here and most were constructed in the early Edo period, in the early 1630s.
And the different altars and shrines within the temple grounds -- Images of the Buddha here and there in the different altars and shrines within the temple grounds

Kyoto City Hall (Day 5)
We began our morning by running towards city hall where we discovered the crazy madness of people. Try seeing that in front of city hall in america!
SanJuSanGendo Temple (三十三間堂), Kyoto, Japan
SanJuSanGendo (literally means a hall with 33 bays) Temple is an old temple in Eastern Kyoto city, many of the temple's objects are designated as National Treasures by the Japanese Government. This temple is close to the Kyoto Tower and the JR Kyoto Station.
The official name of SanJuSanGendo (三十三間堂) is Rengeo-in temple. It was established by the powerful warrior-politician Taira-no-Kiyomori in 1164. The original temple building was lost in a fire, but the building (Main Hall or the Hondo) was reconstructed in 1266. That structure has remained unchanged for 700 years since then with four great renovations during that period. The long temple hall, Hondo, which is about 120 meters long, is made in the Wayo (Japanese) style architecture. As there are 33 spaces between the columns (bays), it came to be known as the hall with 33 bays.
The Main Hall is really an architectural marvel as it was built to withstand earthquakes, which Japan is frequently prone for.
The main worshiped deities are located inside the main hall where cameras are not allowed. The principal images of SanJuSanGendo are the 1001 statues of the Buddhist diety, Juichimen-senju sengen kanzeon, or the Thousand Armed Kannon. There are one thousand standing statues of Kannon (Important Cultural Properties of Japan) and one gigantic seated statue (National Treasure), placed at the center of the standing statues. The statues are made of Japanese cypress. Among the standing statues, 124 were made in the 12th century when this temple was founded, and the remaining 876 were made in the 13th century when the temple was renovated.
The statues and the statues other deities are really a great sight and spellbinding to see. I hope you get a chance to go to the temple and see these statues. And yes, the Kyoto National Museum is right across this temple, so you can visit the Museum too.
Enjoy!!!
Kyoto Travel Guide - Experience Japan
Kyoto Travel Guide - Experience Japan
Kyoto (京都) was the capital of Japan for over a millennium, and carries a reputation as its most beautiful city and the nation's cultural capital. However, visitors may be surprised by how much work they will have to do to see Kyoto's beautiful side. Most first impressions of the city will be of the urban sprawl of central Kyoto, around the ultra-modern glass-and-steel train station, which is itself an example of a city steeped in tradition colliding with the modern world. Nonetheless, the persistent visitor will soon discover Kyoto's hidden beauty in the temples and parks which ring the city center, and find that the city has much more to offer than immediately meets the eye.
Though dwarfed in size by other major Japanese cities, Kyoto is vast in terms of its rich cultural heritage - the material endowment of over a thousand years as the country's imperial capital. The city's numerous palaces, shrines, temples and other landmarks are spread out over the following districts:
Central - Site of Nijō Castle (a former residence of the Tokugawa shōguns) and the stately grounds of the Imperial Palace. The district's southern end is anchored by the massive glass-and-steel building of the city's main gateway, Kyoto Station.
Arashiyama (Western Kyoto) Set against the beautiful tree-covered hills of Arashiyama, this district is rich in both historic and natural wonders.
Higashiyama (Eastern Kyoto) estled between the Kamo River and the temple-studded mountains of Higashiyama, this area's many attractions include the famed geisha district of Gion and the historic sites strung alongside the well-known Philosopher's Path.
North Graced with scores of centuries-old shrines and temples, including several World Heritage Sites. One of Kyoto's most famous attractions - the magnificent gilded pavilion of Kinkaku-ji - can be found here.
South This district covers a large part of Japan's former capital, stretching from the Ōharano area in the west to Fushimi-ku, Daigo, and the southern tip of Higashiyama-ku in the east.
Nestled among the mountains of Western Honshu, Kyoto was the capital of Japan and the residence of the Emperor from 794 until the Meiji Restoration of 1868, when the capital was moved to Tokyo. During its millennium at the center of Japanese power, culture, tradition, and religion, it accumulated an unparalleled collection of palaces, temples and shrines, built for emperors, shoguns, and monks. Kyoto was among the few Japanese cities that escaped the allied bombings of World War II and as a result, Kyoto still has an abundance of prewar buildings, such as the traditional townhouses known as machiya. However the city is continuously undergoing modernization with some of the traditional Kyoto buildings being replaced by newer architecture, such as the Kyoto Station complex.
The sheer size of the city of Kyoto, and the distribution of tourist attractions around the periphery of the city, make the city's public transport system invaluable. Kyoto offers an incredible number of attractions for tourists, and visitors will probably need to plan an itinerary in advance in order to visit as many as possible.
Kyoto has a wide range of accommodation, much of it geared towards foreign visitors. During peak seasons, such as the cherry blossoms in April or during Golden Week when accommodation is difficult to get, consider staying in Osaka. A thirty minute train ride from Kyoto Station to Osaka Station will cost you ¥540 one way. Since Kyoto is a major tourist destination, demand is high and prices follow suit.

Sanjusangendo Temple, Kyoto, Japan, 10/14/2016
Sanjusangendo (三十三間堂, Sanjūsangendō) is the popular name for Rengeo-in, a temple in eastern Kyoto which is famous for its 1001 statues of Kannon, the goddess of mercy. The temple was founded in 1164 and rebuilt a century later after the original structure had been destroyed in a fire.
Measuring 120 meters, the temple hall is Japan's longest wooden structure. The name Sanjusangendo (literally 33 intervals) derives from the number of intervals between the building's support columns, a traditional method of measuring the size of a building. In the center of the main hall sits a large, wooden statue of a 1000-armed Kannon (Senju Kannon) that is flanked on each side by 500 statues of human sized 1000-armed Kannon standing in ten rows. Together they make for an awesome sight.
1000-armed Kannon are equipped with 11 heads to better witness the suffering of humans and with 1000 arms to better help them fight the suffering. Note that the actual statues have only 42 arms each. Subtract the two regular arms and multiply by the 25 planes of existence to get the full thousand.

City Walk in Kyoto Japan/Shijo Street from Shijo Kawaramachi to Gion
【Shijo Street (Shijo Kawaramachi~Gion)】
Shijo Street (Shijo-dori) runs in the center of Kyoto, Japan from east to west through the commercial center of the city. Shijo means Fourth Avenue of Heian-kyo, the ancient capital.
The eastern end of the street is Yasaka Shrine and the western end is Matsunoo Shrine. The street is particularly busy with pedestrians and traffic from the east end to Karasuma Street. The east end passes through the courtesan's district of Gion, with the historic street of Hanami Lane branching off to the south, with the famous Ichiriki Chaya at the corner. It then crosses the Kamo River at Shijo Bridge, and from there to Karasuma Street (Shijo Karasuma) the sidewalk is covered (except at major streets) and features several department stores, such as Daimaru and Marui. The center of this area is the intersection with Kawaramachi Street (Shijo Kawaramachi), a very busy shopping area.

Kiyomizu-Dera Temple + Higashiyama Street Food and Shopping Tour in Kyoto, Japan
While in Kyoto, Japan we went on a tour of Kiyomizu-Dera which is one of the top things to do while in Kyoto. Kiyomizu-Dera (清水寺, Kiyomizudera) means Pure Water Temple in Japanese and is one of the most popular temples in all of Japan. Of course, being located in Kyoto, one Japan's historical capitals, helps its cause. Kyoto is ladled with historical buildings and temples like Kiyomizu-dera. Unlike Tokyo, which was bombed during WW2, most of the city still retains its traditional Japanese flair. We also explored the neighbouring Higashiyama neighbourhood, which is a food and shopping wonder!
Kiyomizu-Dera was founded in either 778 or 780 and is named after the Otowa Waterfall. At first, the temple was associated with the Hosso sect of Buddhism until 1965 when it formed its very own Kita Hosso sect. One of the iconic images of the temple is that of its wooden stage that protrudes from its main hall. It is said that people used to attempt the jump down below and those who survived the fall were then blessed with good luck. I can see people surviving the fall, but I'm less than certain that the probably permanent consequences were worth any of the good luck gained. But never-mind my skepticism, moving on...
In the back of the Kiyomizu-dera temples lies the Jishu shrine, dedicated to love. Having relationship trouble? This might be the spot to cure your illness. At the bottom of the Kiyomizu-dera temple like the Otowa Waterfall which is divided in 3 separate streams. Visitors are free to cleanse themselves with the pure water from the waterfall, which is a typical Japanese tradition even at Shinto shrines.

About us: We are Daniel, Robyn, Ava, Rose and Ella, and together we are The Go To Family. We love to travel! We also love food, exploring historical sites and, of course, doing loads of fun things together as a family. In my videos, you will see me and Robyn tackle every obstacle that traveling with kids throws at us. We do traveling almost exactly the same way as we did before having kids, it just takes a little bit more planning. But it's even more fun and rewarding to be able to show them new cultures and live new experiences with them at the same time! Our mission is to inspire other Millennials to travel with kids.
Our 7-year-old daughter, Ava, also has her own YouTube channel. Feel free to check it out right here:
We also really enjoy posting to Instagram, you can check out our channels here:

Japanese 50's dance on Kyoto City Hall - guys

Kyoto, Japan introduction Inari Tofukuji part 1
Kyoto, Japan’s majestic city of ancient temples and serene gardens, offers superb cultural treasures and a variety of sensual delights. Your most enjoyable activity will probably be strolling through artistically designed garden landscapes with their winding paths, tranquil ponds, stately trees, lush vegetation and traditional wooden temples, so wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to do a lot of walking.
We’re going to take you on some wonderful strolls through the gardens, around the temples and into downtown, and show you the highlights of this magnificent city.
Kyoto’s modern downtown is also fascinating, filled with shops, restaurants, historic structures, the occasional geisha, and plentiful people-watching.
The sublime gardens unfold as you walk along paths that lead through changing vistas around each bend, where you can stop frequently to absorb each new perspective looking left, right, up and down. The different views are enhanced by small statues, foot-bridges, bamboo railings, temple back-drops and glimpses of distant mountains, all exquisitely arranged to be appreciated in moments of reflection.
Kyoto was ranked as the number one visitor destination in the world by the readers of Travel and Leisure magazine for two years in a row in 2014 and 2015, quite an honor.
This is an expanded version that combines several earlier movies.
