Kyoto “Daimonji” Gozan no Okuribi 五山送り火 大文字
Mountain Bon Fire 16AUG
Gozan no Okuribi is a traditional event that takes place in Kyoto during the Obon Festival (Festival of the Ancestors) on August 16 every year. On each of the five mountains that surround the city, giant bonfires are set alight. Three of the fires are in the shape of kanji, the Chinese characters used in Japanese writing. These bonfires are known individually as “Daimonji”, “Hidari Daimonji”, and “Myo-hou”. The other two fires are in the shapes of a boat and a Shinto shrine gate respectively and are called the “Funagata” and “Toriigata”.
There are a number of explanations about the origins of Gozan no Okuribi. The festival has long been close to the hearts of the people of Kyoto and is said to have roots in the 13th century. This tradition is tied together with beliefs surrounding memorial services for departed ancestors on August 15 known as Obon Festival. The Okuribi were meant to guide the souls of the ancestors who return to this world during the Obon period back to the world beyond. The Okuribi are also believed to protect against evil. In addition, drinking water which reflects the light of the Gozan no Okuribi is believed to prevent paralysis.
Burning wood strips of cedar known as “Gomagi” in the torches of the Okuribi is a way of praying. Along with the Aoi Matsuri (The Hollyhock Festival), the Gion Festival, and Jidai Matsuri (The Parade of Eras), the Gozan no Okuribi is called one of the four great events of Kyoto.

Daimonji (also known as Gozan no Okuribi) is an obon fire festival in Kyoto.
Every summer Japan welcomes the spirits of ancestors back to the world of the living as part of the 3 day obon festival. At the end of the festival people light candles and bonfires to mark the departure of ancestors.
Kyoto celebrates this tradition by lighting large bonfires in symbolic shapes on the hills surrounding the city.

Daimonji Fire Festival 2010, Kyoto
Every August 16 since the 1600s, Kyoto marks the end of o-Bon season by lighting up the hillsides with giant kanji, starting at 8 p.m. It's called Daimonji Gozan Okuribi, literally Giant characters five mountains sendoff fires. This marks their function as a sendoff for the ancestral spirits that visit their hometowns in the summer festival season.

Kyoto is a great place to be during Obon Festival! The following description from Wikipedia explains what is going on in this video:
Gozan no Okuribi (五山送り火), more commonly known as Daimonji (大文字), is a festival in Kyoto, Japan. It is the culmination of the Obon festival on August 16, in which five giant bonfires are lit on mountains surrounding the city. It signifies the moment when the spirits of deceased family members, who are said to visit this world during O-Bon, are believed to be returning to the spirit world—thus the name Okuribi (送り火) (roughly, send-off fire).

Fantastic Places in Cool Japan :
Kyoto Gozan Okuribi (Mountain Bonfire) is a traditional bonfire tradition event that takes place every year in August at Mt. Nyoigatake in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto. It is widely known throughout Japan as “Daimonji-yaki” and “Daimonji-no-Okuribi”, but it is officially called “Gozan Okuribi”.
The spirit of the dead, “Seirei”, welcomed to the Bon Festival, has a religious meaning that it is sent back to the world. It is one of the four major events in Kyoto along with the Aoi Matsuri Festival and Gion Matsuri Festival etc.

DAIMONJI OKURIBI on SANJO GREAT BRIDGE Kyoto Japan
Okuribi is a fire lit to send the souls of deceased ancestors on their way after they have returned to this world for the bon festival. In the Daimonji Okuribi festival, 5 mountains (gozan) are used as the stage for an okuribi of huge proportions. The festival starts at 8:00 p.m., when fires are lit on Mt. Nyoigatake to form the Chinese character dai, meaning large. After this, more fires are lit separately on each mountain to form different patterns.

BACK TO JAPAN (viaggio in Giappone) - Kyoto Gozan No Okuribi
Day 16 - Fuochi poco fatui a Kyoto
Quando la base operativa si sposta da Tokyo a Kyoto c'è poco tempo per fare del turismo...e quando il tuo treno viene fermato da un tifone o il testival tanto atteso si nasconde da te, nasce un video come questo. Che dico...proprio questo video!
JAPAN TASTE noi VS food
Kyoto Festival: Fire Ritual in Hirogawara Kyoto (Matsuage)
A countryside tradition that highlights customs of the more rural areas of Japan, Matsu-age festivals are held in three outlying villages in Kyoto during the month of August. This year the Kyoto Fan team headed to a village about an hour north of Kyoto called Hirogawara to take part in their Matsu-age, which has been carefully preserved by the local people for centuries as a ritual to commemorate local fire deity Atago Daimyojin and pray for good crops and the health of the villagers.
Held annually on August 24th, Hirogawara's Matsu-age begins around 8:30 at night. In order to hold the festival a log of Japanese cedar is used to construct a tall pillar about 20m high with a large bundle of kindling on the top. Over the course of the festival the local men hurl flaming torches up at this pillar trying to light it on fire, bring it crashing to the ground, and then stoke the remaining flames until they finally die out in the darkness. Returning back to your modern lives after this timeless celebration from rural Japan will be a challenge!
